    Diagnosing health in composite battery electrodes with explainable deep learning and partial charging data

    Lithium-ion batteries with composite anodes of graphite and silicon are increasingly being used. However, their degradation pathways are complicated due to the blended nature of the electrodes, with graphite and silicon degrading at different rates. Here, we develop a deep learning health diagnostic framework to rapidly quantify and separate the different degradation rates of graphite and silicon in composite anodes using partial charging data. The convolutional neural network (CNN), trained with synthetic data, uses experimental partial charging data to diagnose electrode-level health of tested batteries, with errors of less than 3.1% (corresponding to the loss of active material reaching ∼75%). Sensitivity analysis of the capacity-voltage curve under different degradation modes is performed to provide a physically informed voltage window for diagnostics with partial charging data. By using the gradient-weighted class activation mapping approach, we provide explainable insights into how these CNNs work; highlighting regions of the voltage-curve to which they are most sensitive. Robustness is validated by introducing noise to the data, with no significant negative impact on the diagnostic accuracy for noise levels below 10 mV, thus highlighting the potential for deep learning approaches in the diagnostics of lithium-ion battery performance under real-world conditions. The framework presented here can be generalised to other cell formats and chemistries, providing robust and explainable battery diagnostics for both conventional single material electrodes, but also the more challenging composite electrodes.</p

    Comparative study of Irish and Scottish logboats

    This thesis examines Irish logboats and compares them in detail to Scottish logboats. It catalogues extant and recorded Irish Logboats, and includes drawings and photographic records. All aspects of both countries' boats, such as their dimensions, form, and evidence for propulsion are examined and interpreted. Those logboats that have dating evidence are also examined and compared to literary and other sources. The distributions of the boats are compared to their geographical and archaeological contexts and emerging patterns explored in detail. The results of this study are investigated on a national and regional basis. The native tree species of Ireland and Scotland are considered with particular reference to those used to make the logboats as well as their availability during the demise of logboat use. In keeping with this, evidence for construction techniques is studied, as are their applications in logboat reconstructions. The logboat reconstructions are used with aspects of naval architecture to determine and compare the operational capabilities of logboats under differing load and propulsive conditions. Where applicable, the data which is discerned from the logboats' contexts, forms, dimensions and functional features are combined with aspects of the wood science and naval architecture to determine their original operational uses. Finally, this data is incorporated into an ongoing computer programme which enables the performance capabilities of other logboats, as yet undiscovered, to be determined

    A sensing platform for physiological and contextual feedback to tennis athletes

    In this paper we describe our work on creating a multi-modal sensing platform for providing feedback to tennis coaches and players. The platform includes a fixed installation around a tennis court consisting of a video camera network and a localisation system as well as wearable sensing technology deployed to individual athletes. We describe the various components of this platform and explain how we can capture synchronised multi-modal sensor data streams for games or training sessions. We then describe the content-based retrieval system we are building to facilitate the development of novel coaching tools. We provide some examples of the queries that the system can support, where these queries are chosen to be suitably expressive so as to reflect a coach's complex information needs regarding tennis-related performance factors

    Diffusion-aware voltage source: An equivalent circuit network to resolve lithium concentration gradients in active particles

    Traditional equivalent circuit models (ECMs) have difficulties in estimating battery internal states due to the lack of relevant physics, such as the lithium diffusion in active particles. Here we configure a circuit network to describe the lithium diffusion and define it as a new high-level circuit element called diffusion-aware voltage source. The circuit representation is proven equivalent to the discretized diffusion equation. The new voltage source gives the electrode potential as a function of the surface concentration and thus automatically incorporates the diffusion overpotential. We show that an ECM with the proposed diffusion-aware voltage sources (called "shell ECM") can reproduce the single particle model simulation results, making it a trustworthy easy-to-implement substitute. Furthermore, the simplest shell ECM consisting of a single diffusion-aware voltage source and a resistor is validated against experimental constant-current discharges at various rates. The diffusion-aware voltage source can be used to measure diffusivity by fitting the diffusion resistance against experimental data. The viability of the shell ECM for onboard usage is confirmed by implementation into a battery management system of WAE Technologies. By tracking the internal concentration states, the shell ECM demonstrates robustness to dynamic applied-current profiles.Comment: 35 pages, 14 figure

    Touchstone Stars: Highlights from the Cool Stars 18 Splinter Session

    We present a summary of the splinter session on "touchstone stars" -- stars with directly measured parameters -- that was organized as part of the Cool Stars 18 conference. We discuss several methods to precisely determine cool star properties such as masses and radii from eclipsing binaries, and radii and effective temperatures from interferometry. We highlight recent results in identifying and measuring parameters for touchstone stars, and ongoing efforts to use touchstone stars to determine parameters for other stars.     Overnight staffing in Canadian neonatal and pediatric intensive care units

    AimInfants and children who require specialized medical attention are admitted to neonatal and pediatric intensive care units (ICUs) for continuous and closely supervised care. Overnight in-house physician coverage is frequently considered the ideal staffing model. It remains unclear how often this is achieved in both pediatric and neonatal ICUs in Canada. The aim of this study is to describe overnight in-house physician staffing in Canadian pediatric and level-3 neonatal ICUs (NICUs) in the pre-COVID-19 era.MethodsA national cross-sectional survey was conducted in 34 NICUs and 19 pediatric ICUs (PICUs). ICU directors or their delegates completed a 29-question survey describing overnight staffing by resident physicians, fellow physicians, nurse practitioners, and attending physicians. A comparative analysis was conducted between ICUs with and without in-house physicians.ResultsWe obtained responses from all 34 NICUs and 19 PICUs included in this study. A total of 44 ICUs (83%) with in-house overnight physician coverage provided advanced technologies, such as extracorporeal life support, and included all ICUs that catered to patients with cardiac, transplant, or trauma conditions. Residents provided the majority of overnight coverage, followed by the Critical Care Medicine fellows. An attending physician was in-house overnight in eight (15%) out of the 53 ICUs, seven of which were NICUs. Residents participating in rotations in the ICU would often have rotation durations of less than 6 weeks and were often responsible for providing care during shifts lasting 20–24 h.ConclusionMost PICUs and level-3 NICUs in Canada have a dedicated in-house physician overnight. These physicians are mainly residents or fellows, but a notable variation exists in this arrangement. The potential effects on patient outcomes, resident learning, and physician satisfaction remain unclear and warrant further investigation

    Metabolomic profiling of amines in sepsis predicts changes in NOS canonical pathways

    Rationale Nitric oxide synthase (NOS) is a biomarker/target in sepsis. NOS activity is driven by amino acids, which cycle to regulate the substrate L-arginine in parallel with cycles which regulate the endogenous inhibitors ADMA and L-NMMA. The relationship between amines and the consequence of plasma changes on iNOS activity in early sepsis is not known. Objective Our objective was to apply a metabolomics approach to determine the influence of sepsis on a full array of amines and what consequence these changes may have on predicted iNOS activity. Methods and measurements 34 amino acids were measured using ultra purification mass spectrometry in the plasma of septic patients (n = 38) taken at the time of diagnosis and 24–72 hours post diagnosis and of healthy volunteers (n = 21). L-arginine and methylarginines were measured using liquid-chromatography mass spectrometry and ELISA. A top down approach was also taken to examine the most changed metabolic pathways by Ingenuity Pathway Analysis. The iNOS supporting capacity of plasma was determined using a mouse macrophage cell-based bioassay. Main results Of all the amines measured 22, including L-arginine and ADMA, displayed significant differences in samples from patients with sepsis. The functional consequence of increased ADMA and decreased L-arginine in context of all cumulative metabolic changes in plasma resulted in reduced iNOS supporting activity associated with sepsis. Conclusions In early sepsis profound changes in amine levels were defined by dominant changes in the iNOS canonical pathway resulting in functionally meaningful changes in the ability of plasma to regulate iNOS activity ex vivo
