    Get PDF
In the Industrial Engineering and Chemical Engineering courses of Madrid Polytechnic University the core subjects of Technical Design are taught on the first course but under different names in the first and second four month periods of this degree. The Final Year Project (FYP) is usually the first work in which engineers do a complete engineering project that includes different parts, such as a memory, measuring, budgets and technical drawings. This work sets out to learn and assess the use students make of the knowledge acquired in Technical Drawing subjects when preparing their FYP technical drawings. By analyzing different aspects of 1996 technical drawings included in the FYP about different scopes, it is hoped to be able to see how this specific knowledge is applied to the different specialties (mechanical, electrical, chemistry, etc.) of the degree, as well as the project topics, the type of information contained, the correct use of standards, the tools used to prepare them, etc. The paper has been conducted taking the FYPs of the last 4 years as reference for all the specializations. The purpose of this work was to detect any deficiencies, errors in knowledge, malpractice in execution, etc, in order to have additional information that will enable course content, assessment, and the teaching methodology of the subjects to be adjusted in order to improve teaching. The results of this work are implemented in the contents and practices of the subjects of the technical drawing and a new subject was also purposed

A gearbox model for processing large volumes of data by using pipeline systems encapsulated into virtual containers

Software pipelines enable organizations to chain applications for adding value to contents (e.g., confidentially, reliability, and integrity) before either sharing them with partners or sending them to the cloud. However, the pipeline components add overhead when processing large volumes of data, which can become critical in real-world scenarios. This paper presents a gearbox model for processing large volumes of data by using pipeline systems encapsulated into virtual containers. In this model, the gears represent applications, whereas gearboxes represent software pipelines. This model was implemented as a collaborative system that automatically performs Gear up (by using parallel patterns) and/or Gear down (by using in-memory storage) until all gears produce uniform data processing velocities. This model reduces delays and bottlenecks produced by the heterogeneous performance of applications included in software pipelines. The new container tool has been designed to encapsulate both the collaborative system and the software pipelines into a virtual container and deploy it on IT infrastructures. We conducted case studies to evaluate the performance of when processing medical images and PDF repositories. The incorporation of a capsule to a cloud storage service for pre-processing medical imagery was also studied. The experimental evaluation revealed the feasibility of applying the gearbox model to the deployment of software pipelines in real-world scenarios as it can significantly improve the end-user service experience when pre-processing large-scale data in comparison with state-of-the-art solutions such as Sacbe and Parsl. This work has been partially supported by the “Spanish Ministerio de Economia y Competitividad ” under the project grant TIN2016-79637-P “Towards Unification of HPC and Big Data paradigms”

Trajectory determination at Muon Impact Tracer and Observer (MITO) using artificial neural networks

    Get PDF
We propose a method for the determination of the impact point of muons in each of the two detection planes of the Muon Impact Tracer and Observer (MITO) telescope, which is part of the ORCA (Antarctic Cosmic Ray Observatory). The method uses the relative pulse height obtained by the four photomultipliers associated to the scintillator with the Adaptable and Reconfigurable Acquisition Con- cept for Nuclear Electronics (ARACNE) data adquisition module. These pulses are processed with an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) previously trained with the GEANT4 model of the detector. With the impact point in both MITO planes, we estimate the angle of inci- dence of these particles with in order to evaluate the isotropy of the incident particles. To validate the method, real data from recorded by MITO in Livingston Island, Antarctica have been used to evaluate the feasibility of this method and its application to space weather.Agencia Estatal de Investigació

Trajectory determination of muons using scintillators and a novel self-organizative map

    Get PDF
In this work we propose a method for the determination of the impact point of muons in scintillators using a novel type of self-organizative maps called Self-Equalizing Map (SEM) and comparing the relative pulse height obtained by four photomultipliers (PMTs) at each scintillator. Using two 1 m2{^2} scintillators and calculating the impact point in both of them, we can also estimate the angle of incidence of these particles. This method has been specifically designed for a muon telescope called MITO (Muon Impact Tracer and Observer) which is part of the ORCA (Antarctic Cosmic Ray Observatory). Data from tests using MITO in Livingston Island, Antarctica have been used to evaluate the feasibility of this method. The obtained directions have been found to be consistent with the expected incident directions of atmospheric muons produced by the interaction between CRs and atmospheric atoms.Agencia Estatal de Investigació

    Get PDF

Extensive, Non-Healing Scalp Ulcer Associated with Trauma-Induced Chronic Osteomyelitis

    Get PDF
A 77-year-old woman presented with a trauma to the scalp caused from the blade of a windmill. The condition was persistent from the past 50 years. At the initial examination, a deep, foul-smelling and well-circumscribed ulcer was apparent on the head region, involving the majority of the cranium. Skin biopsy specimens of the lesion were nonspecific. The bone biopsy showed extensive necrotic areas of bone and soft tissues, with lymphocytic exudate foci. A computed tomography scan of the head revealed bone destruction principally involving both the parietal bones, and parts of the frontal and occipital bones. Streptococcus parasanguis was isolated from the skin culture, and Proteus mirabilis and Peptostreptococcus sp. were identified in the cultures from the bone. A long-term treatment with amoxicillin-clavulanic acid (1 g/12 h) and levofloxacin (500 mg/day) was prescribed, but even after 6 months, the lesion remained unchanged. The frequency of occurrence of scalp ulcers in dermatological patients is less, principally because of the rich blood supply to this area. We have not found any similar case report of a scalp ulcer secondary to chronic osteomyelitis discovered more than 50 years after the causal trauma. We want to highlight the importance of complete cutaneous evaluation including skin and bone biopsies, when scalp osteomyelitis is suspected

Waiting list management of cardiac surgical procedures is a main concern for all the Spanish autonomic health systems and for our scientific Society. The first statement for optimal timing of patients waiting for cardiac surgery was published in 2000. Since then, after significant changes in the management of some pathologies, new normative frameworks and the current healthcare situation, a review of the timing criteria to offer an adequate and updated standard of care is needed. In this document we aim to review the available literature in the field and stablish a consensus within a working group of the Spanish Society of Cardiovascular and Endovascular Surgery to optimize the priority recommendations in cardiac surgical waiting lists in our country. Involvement of ANXA5 and ILKAP in Susceptibility to Malignant Melanoma

Single nucleotide-polymorphisms (SNPs) are a source of diversity among human population, which may be responsible for the different individual susceptibility to diseases and/or response to drugs, among other phenotypic traits. Several low penetrance susceptibility genes associated with malignant melanoma (MM) have been described, including genes related to pigmentation, DNA damage repair and oxidative stress pathways. In the present work, we conducted a candidate gene association study based on proteins and genes whose expression we had detected altered in melanoma cell lines as compared to normal melanocytes. The result was the selection of 88 loci and 384 SNPs, of which 314 fulfilled our quality criteria for a case-control association study. The SNP rs6854854 in ANXA5 was statistically significant after conservative Bonferroni correction when 464 melanoma patients and 400 controls were analyzed in a discovery Phase I. However, this finding could not be replicated in the validation phase, perhaps because the minor allele frequency of SNP rs6854854 varies depending on the geographical region considered. Additionally, a second SNP (rs6431588) located on ILKAP was found to be associated with melanoma after considering a combined set of 1,883 MM cases and 1,358 disease-free controls. The OR was 1.29 (95% CI 1.12–1.48; p-value = 4×10−4). Both SNPs, rs6854854 in ANXA5 and rs6431588 in ILKAP, show population structure, which, assuming that the Spanish population is not significantly structured, suggests a role of these loci on a specific genetic adaptation to different environmental conditions. Furthermore, the biological relevance of these genes in MM is supported by in vitro experiments, which show a decrease in the transcription levels of ANXA5 and ILKAP in melanoma cells compared to normal melanocyte

Effect of sex in systemic psoriasis therapy: Differences in prescription, effectiveness and safety in the BIOBADADERM prospective cohort

The effect of sex on systemic therapy for psoriasis has not been well studied. The aim of this study was to analyse a large multicentre Spanish cohort of 2,881 patients with psoriasis (58.3% males), followed from January 2008 to November 2018, to determine whether sex influences prescription, effectiveness of therapy, and the risk of adverse events. The results show that women are more likely than men to be pre-scribed biologics. There were no differences between men and women in effectiveness of therapy, measur-ed in terms of drug survival. Women were more likely to develop adverse events, but the difference in risk was small and does not justify different management. Study limitations include residual confounding and the use of drug survival as a proxy for effectiveness. The BIOBADADERM project is promoted by the Fundación Piel Sana Academia Española de Dermatología y Venereología, which receives financial support from the Spanish Medicines and Health Products Agency (Agencia Española de Medicamentos y Productos Sanitarios) and from pharmaceutical companies (Abbott/Abbvie, Pfizer, MSD, Novartis, Lilly, Janssen and Almirall)

A Customized Pigmentation SNP Array Identifies a Novel SNP Associated with Melanoma Predisposition in the SLC45A2 Gene

As the incidence of Malignant Melanoma (MM) reflects an interaction between skin colour and UV exposure, variations in genes implicated in pigmentation and tanning response to UV may be associated with susceptibility to MM. In this study, 363 SNPs in 65 gene regions belonging to the pigmentation pathway have been successfully genotyped using a SNP array. Five hundred and ninety MM cases and 507 controls were analyzed in a discovery phase I. Ten candidate SNPs based on a p-value threshold of 0.01 were identified. Two of them, rs35414 (SLC45A2) and rs2069398 (SILV/CKD2), were statistically significant after conservative Bonferroni correction. The best six SNPs were further tested in an independent Spanish series (624 MM cases and 789 controls). A novel SNP located on the SLC45A2 gene (rs35414) was found to be significantly associated with melanoma in both phase I and phase II (P<0.0001). None of the other five SNPs were replicated in this second phase of the study. However, three SNPs in TYR, SILV/CDK2 and ADAMTS20 genes (rs17793678, rs2069398 and rs1510521 respectively) had an overall p-value<0.05 when considering the whole DNA collection (1214 MM cases and 1296 controls). Both the SLC45A2 and the SILV/CDK2 variants behave as protective alleles, while the TYR and ADAMTS20 variants seem to function as risk alleles. Cumulative effects were detected when these four variants were considered together. Furthermore, individuals carrying two or more mutations in MC1R, a well-known low penetrance melanoma-predisposing gene, had a decreased MM risk if concurrently bearing the SLC45A2 protective variant. To our knowledge, this is the largest study on Spanish sporadic MM cases to date
