    Studies in Intentionality: The Role of Pregnancy Intention, Pregnancy History, and the Age of Conception the Evaluation and Utilization of Reproductive Health Services.

    The promotion of planned pregnancies has long been a goal of women’s reproductive health researchers and advocates within the United States. However, almost half (49%) of all pregnancies in the U.S. are unintended (Finer and Henshaw, 2006). The goal of this research is to increase understanding of intentionality, from expanding upon established antecedents of pregnancy intention to examining the effect of pregnancy intention on the utilization and evaluation of reproductive health services. The first study examined the relationship between pregnancy intention and satisfaction with prenatal and hospital-based labor and delivery care. Results revealed that women with unwanted pregnancies were more likely to report lower satisfaction with their prenatal care provider, their provider’s communication skills, and with their perceived sense of control during labor and delivery. The second study examined the potential for pregnancy history as an antecedent of pregnancy intention in a nationally representative sample of women ages 15-44. Separate analyses were further conducted to examine if these hypothesized relationships changed as women aged. Pregnancy history, in particular a history of prior unwanted pregnancy, was found to be significantly associated with an increased likelihood of subsequent unintended pregnancies. Conversely, women with a history of younger age at first pregnancy and/or pregnancy loss were less likely to report their pregnancies as unintended. When analyzed separately by age group, the relationship between pregnancy history and pregnancy intention were generally strongest for women ages 30-44. The final study tested the relationship between pregnancy intention, pregnancy history, and the utilization of pregnancy prevention services, specifically utilization of contraception during the interval between pregnancies and the election of post-pregnancy tubal sterilization. Pregnancy history was found to be significantly associated with the contraceptive use. Women who first became pregnant before age 30 were more likely to utilize contraception in the pregnancy interval, while a history of both unwanted pregnancy and pregnancy loss were negatively associated with this outcome. The relationship between pregnancy history, pregnancy intention, and the evaluation and utilization of reproductive health services, further complicated by influence of age, supports the view of intentionality as a complex and potentially influential construct.Ph.D.Health Services Organization & PolicyUniversity of Michigan, Horace H.     In 2019, United Methodist Community House (UMCH) commissioned IFF, a real estate consulting firm, to perform a strategic facility plan. This strategic plan’s needs assessment included the following: A new senior center, expanded child development center, and relocation of administrative offices. Seidman Research Office at Grand Valley State University was retained by UMCH to perform an economic assessment of the IFF strategic facility plan. This economic assessment will: (A) evaluate the economic impact of construction of proposed senior center; (B) evaluate the economic impact of UMCH operations; (C) evaluate the economic impact of expanded child development center; and (D) quantify the economic impact of the new senior center (magnet effect)

    Population Dynamics of Long-tailed Ducks Breeding on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, Alaska

    Population estimates for long-tailed ducks in North America have declined by nearly 50% over the past 30 years. Life history and population dynamics of this species are difficult to ascertain, because the birds nest at low densities across a broad range of habitat types. Between 1991 and 2004, we collected information on productivity and survival of long-tailed ducks at three locations on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. Clutch size averaged 7.1 eggs, and nesting success averaged 30%. Duckling survival to 30 days old averaged 10% but was highly variable among years, ranging from 0% to 25%. Apparent annual survival of adult females based on mark-recapture of nesting females was estimated at 74%. We combined these estimates of survival and productivity into a matrix-based population model, which predicted an annual population decline of 19%. Elasticities indicated that population growth rate (?) was most sensitive to changes in adult female survival. Further, the relatively high sensitivity of ? to duckling survival suggests that low duckling survival may be a bottleneck to productivity in some years. These data represent the first attempt to synthesize a population model for this species. Although our analyses were hampered by the small sample sizes inherent in studying a dispersed nesting species, our model provides a basis for management actions and can be enhanced as additional data become available.Les estimations de populations d’hareldes kakawis en Amérique du Nord ont chuté de près de 50 pour cent ces 30 dernières années. Le cycle biologique et la dynamique des populations de cette espèce sont difficiles à établir car ces oiseaux nichent moyennant de faibles densités dans une vaste gamme d’habitats. De 1991 à 2004, nous avons recueilli des données sur la productivité et la survie des hareldes kakawis à trois emplacements du delta Yukon-Kuskokwim. Les couvées atteignaient 7,1 oeufs en moyenne, tandis que le succès de reproduction s’établissait généralement à 30 pour cent. En moyenne, 10 pour cent des jeunes canards survivaient jusqu’à l’âge de 30 jours, mais ce taux variait beaucoup d’une année à l’autre, allant de 0 pour cent à 25 pour cent. Annuellement, d’après la méthode par marquage et recapture des femelles nidificatrices, la survie apparente des femelles adultes était évaluée à 74 pour cent. Nous avons combiné ces estimations de survie et de productivité dans un modèle de population matriciel, ce qui a permis de prédire un déclin de population annuel de 19 pour cent. Selon les élasticités, le taux de croissance de la population (?) était plus sensible aux changements dans le cas de la survie des femelles adultes. Par ailleurs, la sensibilité relativement élevée du ? par rapport à la survie des jeunes canards laisse croire que le faible taux de survie des jeunes canards pourrait présenter une embûche en matière de productivité d’ici quelques années.     Recombinant myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein quality modifies evolution of experimental autoimmune encephalitis in macaques

    The authors describe quantitatively and qualitatively different forms of experimental autoimmune encephalitis (EAE) in cynomolgus macaques. They found that bacterial contaminants within recombinant human myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein seemed to aggravate disease evolution. They provide anatomopathological features of fulminant and progressive forms of EAE, allowing them to distinguish specific factors influencing the evolution of this model of autoimmune demyelinating disease. Experimental autoimmune encephalitis (EAE) is a well-recognized model for the study of human acquired demyelinating diseases (ADD), a group of inflammatory disorders of the central nervous system (CNS) characterized by inflammation, myelin loss, and neurological impairment of variable severity. In rodents, EAE is typically induced by active immunization with a combination of myelin-derived antigen and a strong adjuvant as complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA), containing components of the mycobacterial wall, while myelin antigen alone or associated with other bacterial components, as lipopolysaccharides (LPS), often fails to induce EAE. In contrast to this, EAE can be efficiently induced in non-human primates by immunization with the recombinant human myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (rhMOG), produced in Escherichia coli (E. coli), purified and formulated with incomplete Freund's adjuvant (IFA), which lacks bacterial elements. Here, we provide evidence indicating how trace amounts of bacterial contaminants within rhMOG may influence the course and severity of EAE in the cynomolgus macaque immunized with rhMOG/IFA. The residual amount of E. coli contaminants, as detected with mass spectrometry within rhMOG protein stocks, were found to significantly modulate the severity of clinical, radiological, and histologic hallmarks of EAE in macaques. Indeed, animals receiving the purest rhMOG showed milder disease severity, increased numbers of remissions, and reduced brain damage. Histologically, these animals presented a wider diversity of lesion types, including changes in normal-appearing white matter and prephagocytic lesions. Non-human primates EAE model with milder histologic lesions reflect more accurately ADD and permits to study of the pathogenesis of disease initiation and progression

    Assimilation of shrimp farm sediment by Holothuria scabra: a coupled fatty acid and stable isotope approach

    Deposit-feeding sea cucumbers are efficient nutrient recyclers and have the potential to contribute to the limitation of organic matter load in polyculture or integrated aquaculture systems. Assessing how they assimilate organic matter originating from other farmed species is therefore important for the development of such multi-species farming systems. Here, a coupled stable isotope − fatty acid approach was used to characterize the assimilation of organic matter from shrimp (Penaeus stylirostris) farming by Holothuria scabra in an experimental culture system. H. scabra were reared in mesocosms on shrimp farming-originating sediment with and without additional food sources (maize and fish meals). Although fatty acid results did indicate that shrimp-farming sediment was assimilated by holothurids, we found no evidence of maize waste and fish meal contribution to H. scabra organic carbon (no effect on δ13C, no accumulation of meal-specific fatty acids). However, a strong effect of fish meal on H. scabra δ15N was observed, suggesting that this additional food source could represent an alternative source of nitrogen for holothurids. Finally, this study supports the culture of H. scabra as a perspective to reduce sedimentary organic matter excess associated with shrimp farms, and suggest that the addition of selected food sources might contribute to increasing the content in some nitrogen organic compounds in holothurid tissues

    Mitochondrial DNA deletions in muscle satellite cells: implications for therapies.

    Progressive myopathy is a major clinical feature of patients with mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) disease. There is limited treatment available for these patients although exercise and other approaches to activate muscle stem cells (satellite cells) have been proposed. The majority of mtDNA defects are heteroplasmic (a mixture of mutated and wild-type mtDNA present within the muscle) with high levels of mutated mtDNA and low levels of wild-type mtDNA associated with more severe disease. The culture of satellite cell-derived myoblasts often reveals no evidence of the original mtDNA mutation although it is not known if this is lost by selection or simply not present in these cells. We have explored if the mtDNA mutation is present in the satellite cells in one of the commonest genotypes associated with mitochondrial myopathies (patients with single, large-scale mtDNA deletions). Analysis of satellite cells from eight patients showed that the level of mtDNA mutation in the satellite cells is the same as in the mature muscle but is most often subsequently lost during culture. We show that there are two periods of selection against the mutated form, one early on possibly during satellite cell activation and the other during the rapid replication phase of myoblast culture. Our data suggest that the mutations are also lost during rapid replication in vivo, implying that strategies to activate satellite cells remain a viable treatment for mitochondrial myopathies in specific patient groups

    From Coarse to Fine? Spatial and Temporal Dynamics of Cortical Face Processing

    Primary vision segregates information along 2 main dimensions: orientation and spatial frequency (SF). An important question is how this primary visual information is integrated to support high-level representations. It is generally assumed that the information carried by different SF is combined following a coarse-to-fine sequence. We directly addressed this assumption by investigating how the network of face-preferring cortical regions processes distinct SF over time. Face stimuli were flashed during 75, 150, or 300 ms and masked. They were filtered to preserve low SF (LSF), middle SF (MSF), or high SF (HSF). Most face-preferring regions robustly responded to coarse LSF, face information in early stages of visual processing (i.e., until 75 ms of exposure duration). LSF processing decayed as a function of exposure duration (mostly until 150 ms). In contrast, the processing of fine HSF, face information became more robust over time in the bilateral fusiform face regions and in the right occipital face area. The present evidence suggests the coarse-to-fine strategy as a plausible modus operandi in high-level visual cortex

    The 2017 Berlin Concussion in Sport Group Consensus Statement provides a global summary of best practice in concussion prevention, diagnosis and management, underpinned by systematic reviews and expert consensus. Due to their different settings and rules, individual sports need to adapt concussion guidelines according to their specific regulatory environment. At the same time, consistent application of the Berlin Consensus Statement’s themes across sporting codes is likely to facilitate superior and uniform diagnosis and management, improve concussion education and highlight collaborative research opportunities. This document summarises the approaches discussed by medical representatives from the governing bodies of 10 different contact and collision sports in Dublin, Ireland in July 2017. Those sports are: American football, Australian football, basketball, cricket, equestrian sports, football/soccer, ice hockey, rugby league, rugby union and skiing.
