Selecting background galaxies in weak-lensing analysis of galaxy clusters
In this paper, we present a new method to select the faint, background
galaxies used to derive the mass of galaxy clusters by weak lensing.
The method is based on the simultaneous analysis of the shear signal, that
should be consistent with zero for the foreground, unlensed galaxies, and of
the colors of the galaxies: photometric data from the COSMic evOlution Survey
are used to train the color selection. In order to validate this methodology,
we test it against a set of state-of-the-art image simulations of mock galaxy
clusters in different redshift [] and mass
[] ranges, mimicking medium-deep multicolor
imaging observations (e.g. SUBARU, LBT).
The performance of our method in terms of contamination by unlensed sources
is comparable to a selection based on photometric redshifts, which however
requires a good spectral coverage and is thus much more observationally
demanding. The application of our method to simulations gives an average ratio
between estimated and true masses of . As a further test,
we finally apply our method to real data, and compare our results with other
weak lensing mass estimates in the literature: for this purpose we choose the
cluster Abell 2219 (), for which multi-band (BVRi) data are publicly

Factors Influencing Lease Revenue and Non-industrial Landowners' Willingness to allow Hunting Access
Despite the fact that earnings associated with selling hunting leases could significantly contribute to landowners' incomes, only a small minority of them allow access on their lands for a fee. Based on a sample survey of Mississippi state landowners, we analyzed landowners' willingness to participate in supplying leases as well as factors influencing lease revenue per fee acre. While landowners' decision to allow hunting access and factors influencing lease revenue per acre were jointly modeled consistent with Heckman's analysis of sample selectivity bias, the hunting lease revenue function was specified in accordance with Rosen's hedonic pricing theory. Empirical results showed landowners' concerns about control over their land, loss of privacy and damage to property, and accident liability insurance reduced their willingness to allow hunting access; and, in contrast, increase in total land holding, race and residential location increased the probability of participation. With regards to factors explaining differences in lease revenue per fee acre, analysis showed that location, expertise in managing fee hunting enterprise, provision of services, and certain wildlife habitats account for systematic variations in lease revenues. Finding Strong Gravitational Lenses in the Kilo Degree Survey with Convolutional Neural Networks
The volume of data that will be produced by new-generation surveys requires
automatic classification methods to select and analyze sources. Indeed, this is
the case for the search for strong gravitational lenses, where the population
of the detectable lensed sources is only a very small fraction of the full
source population. We apply for the first time a morphological classification
method based on a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for recognizing strong
gravitational lenses in square degrees of the Kilo Degree Survey (KiDS),
one of the current-generation optical wide surveys. The CNN is currently
optimized to recognize lenses with Einstein radii arcsec, about
twice the -band seeing in KiDS. In a sample of colour-magnitude
selected Luminous Red Galaxies (LRG), of which three are known lenses, the CNN
retrieves 761 strong-lens candidates and correctly classifies two out of three
of the known lenses. The misclassified lens has an Einstein radius below the
range on which the algorithm is trained. We down-select the most reliable 56
candidates by a joint visual inspection. This final sample is presented and
discussed. A conservative estimate based on our results shows that with our
proposed method it should be possible to find massive LRG-galaxy
lenses at z\lsim 0.4 in KiDS when completed. In the most optimistic scenario
this number can grow considerably (to maximally 2400 lenses), when
widening the colour-magnitude selection and training the CNN to recognize

Silvicultural Best Management Practice Compliance Monitoring Programs in the Southern United States
Passage of the Clean Water Act (CWA) of 1972 prompted states to invest significant resources to develop programs to control nonpoint source (NPS) pollution from forestry and other activities. Forestry-related agencies and organizations have since developed silvicultural best management practice (BMP) guidelines to reduce NPS pollution, maintain stream integrity, and meet state water quality standards. To determine the effectiveness and implementation level of best management practices (BMP) on public and private forestland, states further developed and implemented their BMP compliance monitoring programs. Failures in Reflective Functioning and Reported Symptoms of Anxiety and Depression in Bereaved Individuals: A Study on a Sample of Family Caregivers of Palliative Care Patients
Introduction. This study aims at examining the role of failures in reflective functioning in predicting anxiety and depression among family caregivers of palliative care patients deceased for at least one year. Methods. A sample of 157 bereaved participants (77.1% females, mean age = 43.50 ± 14.04 years) completed the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the Reflective Functioning Questionnaire (RFQ). Results. Results of the correlational analysis showed that anxiety was positively correlated with uncertainty about mental states, indicating one type of impairment in reflective functioning. Anxiety was also negatively correlated with the certainty about mental states. Depression was negatively correlated with certainty but not with uncertainty about mental states. The results of regression analysis indicated that gender and certainty about mental states were statistically significant predictors of anxiety, with the final model explaining 23% of the variance. The results also showed that gender, the condition of being the main caregiver, and the certainty about mental states were significant predictors of depression, with the final model predicting 14% of the variance. Conclusions. Overall, the results of this study point out that the bereaved individuals who scored low on certainty about mental states reported more symptoms of anxiety and depression. Psychological interventions to prevent mental disorders and to promote psychological health in the context of palliative care should carefully consider these findings

As the concern over global warming grows, interest in sequestering carbon in terrestrial ecosystems is expected to intensify. Nonindustrial private forest (NIPF) landowners in the southeastern United States can play a major role in sequestering atmospheric carbon. Sequestering carbon through reforestation/afforestation incentive programs requires participation by university Extension personnel to effectively communicate knowledge to landowners. This article discusses above and belowground carbon sequestration, carbon sequestration programs available to nonindustrial private forest landowners, and activities university Extension personnel may engage in to facilitate the implementation of such programs
Educational Needs of Southern Forest Landowners
South-central United States forest landowners were surveyed to determine their forestry-related educational needs and appropriate methods for promoting effective programs covering desired topics. The majority of respondents had not participated in past educational programs because they were unaware of their existence. Therefore, forestry professionals and university Extension personnel should inform and encourage nonindustrial private forest (NIPF) landowners to take advantage of available opportunities. They should also use tax rolls to develop forest landowner databases. Once developed, newsletters, pamphlets, brochures, or letters should be mailed to increase forest landowner knowledge and awareness of forestry-related educational programs and activities

Shapley Supercluster Survey: Construction of the photometric catalogues and i-band data release
The Shapley Supercluster Survey is a multi-wavelength survey covering an area of ∼23 deg² (∼260 Mpc² at z = 0.048) around the supercluster core, including nine Abell and two poor clusters, having redshifts in the range 0.045–0.050. The survey aims to investigate the role of the cluster-scale mass assembly on the evolution of galaxies, mapping the effects of the environment from the cores of the clusters to their outskirts and along the filaments. The optical (ugri) imaging acquired with OmegaCAM on the VLT Survey Telescope is essential to achieve the project goals providing accurate multi-band photometry for the galaxy population down to m∗ + 6. We describe the methodology adopted to construct the optical catalogues and to separate extended and point-like sources. The catalogues reach average 5σ limiting magnitudes within a 3 arcsec diameter aperture of ugri = [24.4,24.6,24.1,23.3] and are 93 per cent complete down to ugri = [23.8,23.8,23.5,22.0] mag, corresponding to ∼m∗ r + 8.5. The data are highly uniform in terms of observing conditions and all acquired with seeing less than 1.1 arcsec full width at half-maximum. The median seeing in r band is 0.6 arcsec, corresponding to 0.56 kpc h⁻¹ 70 at z = 0.048. While the observations in the u, g and r bands are still ongoing, the i-band observations have been completed, and we present the i-band catalogue over the whole survey area. The latter is released and it will be regularly updated, through the use of the Virtual Observatory tools. This includes 734 319 sources down to i = 22.0 mag and it is the first optical homogeneous catalogue at such a depth, covering the central region of the Shapley supercluster
Cosmic dance in the Shapley Concentration Core - I. A study of the radio emission of the BCGs and tailed radio galaxies
The Shapley Concentration () covers several degrees in the
Southern Hemisphere, and includes galaxy clusters in advanced evolutionary
stage, groups of clusters in the early stages of merger, fairly massive
clusters with ongoing accretion activity, and smaller groups located in
filaments in the regions between the main clusters. With the goal to
investigate the role of cluster mergers and accretion on the radio galaxy
population, we performed a multi-wavelength study of the BCGs and of the
galaxies showing extended radio emission in the cluster complexes of Abell 3528
and Abell 3558. Our study is based on a sample of 12 galaxies. We observed the
clusters with the GMRT at 235, 325 and 610 MHz, and with the VLA at 8.46 GHz.
We complemented our study with the TGSS at 150 MHz, the SUMSS at 843 MHz and
ATCA at 1380, 1400, 2380, and 4790 MHz data. Optical imaging with ESO-VST and
mid-IR coverage with WISE are also available for the host galaxies. We found
deep differences in the properties of the radio emission of the BCGs in the two
cluster complexes. The BCGs in the A3528 complex and in A3556, which are
relaxed cool-core objects, are powerful active radio galaxies. They also
present hints of restarted activity. On the contrary, the BCGs in A3558 and
A3562, which are well known merging systems, are very faint, or quiet, in the
radio band. The optical and IR properties of the galaxies are fairly similar in
the two complexes, showing all passive red galaxies. Our study shows remarkable
differences in the radio properties of the BGCs, which we relate to the
different dynamical state of the host cluster. On the contrary, the lack of
changes between such different environments in the optical band suggests that
the dynamical state of galaxy clusters does not affect the optical counterparts
