The following internship report is an investigation about academic libraries as mediating cultural agents.
This report´s subject was generated during my internship in the Lisbon´s Faculty of Letters Library when I noticed the legitimacy of a knowledge center as a cultural and educational intermediary in a academic environment.
Academic Libraries have been seen as a backup system to higher education. They contribute on his insertion of students in the scientific investigation universe and also in the work market by developing activities that embrace their scientific and cultural knowledge and in this way performing as an educational mediator.
In this report, I aim to expose the academic libraries role as cultural industry that develop artistic sensitive and criticism in the public. Cultural intermediation is considered from gathering points of view and functional located in the cultural process stages. They mediate between creation consumption ensuring the dissemination of cultural creations. With the transformations of traditional library, it ceases to provide services only for the dissemination and storage of information, starting to act as intermediary through expressions of human culture, sets of cultural activities as a tool of cultural democratization
Influence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and ventilotherapy on hearing
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is a disease that affects the airways, characterized by its chronic and progressive inflammation, resulting in obstruction of the respiratory flow. It’s pathogenesis leads to states of hypoxia and hypercapnia (states of low oxygen content and high carbon dioxide content, respectively, in the bloodstream), which several authors advocate as causes for the development of hearing loss. At the same time, ventilation therapy is commonly used in the treatment of this pathology, as it prevents
this same respiratory obstruction. In doing so, this therapy is thought to have the potential to counteract the effects of the disease on hearing ability. This study aims to investigate whether chronic obstructive pulmonary disease has any influence on the auditory system, and therefore whether it can be considered a risk for the development of hearing loss, and also to assess the possibility of ventilation therapy, indirectly, effect on its attenuation or reversal.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
1) o trabalho de projecto e a investigação-acção afiguram-se como estratégias adequadas à formação profissional centrada nas práticas e promotora do desenvolvimento profissional;
2) a formação inicial dos professores com vista à responsabilização pelo trabalho com crianças portadoras de NEE`s revela-se insuficiente, quer a nível teórico quer a nível prático;
3) as escolas devem organizar-se de modo a constituírem fontes de informação sobre as necessidades dos alunos, de modo a que os professores principiantes possam facilmente observá-los e diagnosticá-los, para proporem as medidas adequadas;
Programa Comenius 2.
Micro, macro and mega-influencers on instagram: The power of persuasion via the parasocial relationship
This study analyzes the effect of the parasocial relationship on the audience's intention to adopt the recom-mendations of micro, macro and mega-influencers, considering the number of followers, perceived popularity and opinion leadership. A sample of 140 Portuguese social media influencers (SMIs) was classified into micro, macro or mega-influencers. 577 valid responses to a questionnaire were analyzed using Andrew Hayes' macro PROCESS for SPSS. The findings suggest that the indirect effect between the number of followers and the intention to adopt SMIs' recommendations is mediated by the perceived popularity and opinion leadership, and are moderated by the parasocial relationship. Significant differences are found between micro, macro and mega-influencers in terms of credibility, attractiveness and established relationship. The categorization into micro, macro and mega-influencers is adapted to the context of a small country. This paper provides relevant infor-mation on the process of SMI selection.- (undefined
Social policies, political attitudes and ageing: Results from a survey on Greater Lisbon / Políticas sociais, atitudes políticas e envelhecimento: Resultados de uma pesquisa na Grande Lisboa
This paper considers an important aspect for the assessment of public policies in Portugal, namely the opinions of laypersons or population in general, and particularly the ones regarding social policies. Such opinions, even though different from the ones of experts, must be dully taken into consideration in any assessment of the effectiveness of public policies. The study is based on a survey performed in December 2016, regarding a sample of 600 individuals living in the Greater Lisbon, stratified by gender, education and age. Its main focus is the analysis of shifting attitudes according to age. The questions refer namely to: identification with political parties; vote in recent elections; reasons for vote and/or abstention; interest for politics; features perceived in Portuguese political agents; trust in political agents; satisfaction with the functioning of democracy in Portugal; citizens’ perceived influence in political events; relevant aspects in partisan choice; self-perception in terms of left-right dimension; preference for economic market regulation, state regulation and/or regulation by the ‘third sector’; evaluation of social policies; biases within these perceptions and preferences associated with gender, levels of income, and age
Spatial epidemiology of cancer : data types, spatial aggregation and geographical patterns at mainland Portugal
A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor in Information Management Specialization in Geographical Information SystemsThe importance of research on the spatial epidemiology of cancer has been progressively
recognized and the number of studies in this field has been increasing steadily, having
experienced significant growth over the last decade.
Overall, spatial epidemiology is a comprehensive research area that covers a variety of subjects.
Among those subjects, and particularly in the case of spatial epidemiology of cancer, one
important topic is the level of spatial data aggregation. The analysis of individual data may
present ethical data protection issues, so geographically-aggregated data are often used in
epidemiological research. Conversely, the analysis of aggregated data also raises certain
methodological issues, such as: a) the importance of calculating standardized rates (usually by
sex and age) to allow for the comparison of different geographical units; b) the need to take into
account the fact that the results obtained at a given level of geographical aggregation cannot be
extrapolated as true for other levels of aggregation; and c) the possible existence of the “small
numbers problem” and the relevance of using smoothed rates to try to solve it.
This thesis takes a first look at this subject through a systematic review of the literature on the
spatial epidemiology of cancer. The findings show that the questions which are considered most
frequently in the literature consist of: a) the methodology used; b) the spatial distribution of
cancer and its temporal evolution; and c) risk factors.
The thesis then seeks to address these three aspects. In order to do that, several methodological
issues related to the research of the spatial epidemiology of cancer are evaluated and the
mortality distribution of all types of cancer is analyzed. Given the high rates of incidence and
mortality due to colorectal cancer among the Portuguese population, this cancer type is taken
as a case-study, and the distribution of its incidence and mortality is studied and compared with
the distribution of the prevalence of the main risk factors. With regard to methodology, it is find that data aggregation at the municipality level makes it
possible to obtain detailed information on the geographical distribution of cancer in mainland
Portugal, and simultaneously address the small numbers problem. The use of statistical methods
to calculate smoothed rates based on the spatial vicinity of the units under analysis also
contributes to solving this latter problem. As far as cancer’s spatial distribution patterns are concerned, it is find significant heterogeneity
across the municipalities of mainland Portugal, both when examining overall cancer mortality
and when specifically looking at colorectal cancer incidence and mortality.
Regarding the mortality distribution of all cancer types, it is find that the highest mortality rates
tend to cluster around Oporto (on the north coast), Lisbon (on the west coast) and in the
municipalities of southeast mainland Portugal.
With respect to colorectal cancer, it are detected different patterns of incidence and mortality.
The distribution of colorectal cancer incidence is more heterogeneous than that of colorectal
cancer mortality. In addition, both colorectal cancer incidence and mortality exhibit especially
high values for men in two municipalities in the center of mainland Portugal, which seems to call
for a more detailed analysis of this area.
In terms of risk factors, the following main risks, which have been identified as having a possible
association with colorectal cancer, were considered: tobacco smoking; alcohol intake; and
dietary behavior. Screening, as a secondary prevention measure aimed at the early detection of
cancer and mortality reduction, was also considered in the analysis. However, data on these risk
factors are representative only at much more aggregated geographic units, such as NUTS II.
Therefore, a detailed analysis of association could not be performed. Finally, the natural
background radiation in mainland Portugal was also analyzed, computing a mean by
municipalities, and the conclusion is that its association with colorectal cancer is generally weak.
This work points to a variety of interesting topics to study in future research, such as: a) to apply
the same methodologies to other cancer types; b) to study the geographical association of risk
factors, like socio-demographic and environmental risk factors, with cancer incidence and
mortality; c) to test other spatial methods in the research of spatial epidemiology of cancer in
Portugal, like, for an instance, kriging or multilevel models; and d) to establish suitable
methodologies to study spatial epidemiology of cancer in the Portuguese islands.
A tese procura então abordar esses três aspetos.
e mortalidade do cancro colorretal.
De forma a testar esta hipótese, foram aplicados inquéritos online à população, de modo a se conseguir chegar às respetivas respostasWith this dissertation, we intend to better understand the phenomenon of political participation, that is, what factors condition citizens to vote or not to vote and whether abstention is a reality present mainly in the young age group, as the most varied studies indicate. With the expansion of media and social network, political parties and electoral management bodies have used these new tools to captivate citizens. In this way, electronic voting could be a solution to combat abstention, especially in the young public. In order to test this hypothesis, online surveys were applied to the population, in order to arrive at their answer
Planctomycetes as Novel Source of Bioactive Molecules
Marine environments are a fruitful source of bioactive compounds some of which are the newest leading drugs in medicinal therapeutics. Of particular importance are organisms like sponges and macroalgae and their associated microbiome. Planctomycetes, abundant in macroalgae biofilms, are promising producers of bioactive compounds since they share characteristics, like large genomes and complex life cycles, with the most bioactive bacteria, the Actinobacteria. Furthermore, genome mining revealed the presence of secondary metabolite pathway genes or clusters in 13 analyzed Planctomycetes genomes. In order to assess the antimicrobial production of a large and diverse collection of Planctomycetes isolated from macroalgae from the Portuguese coast, molecular and bioactivity assays were performed in 40 bacteria from several taxa. Two genes commonly associated with the production of bioactive compounds, nonribosomal peptide synthetases (NRPS) and polyketide synthases (PKS) genes were screened. Molecular analysis revealed that 95 % of the planctomycetes potentially have one or both secondary bioactive genes; 85 % amplified with PKS-I primers and 55 % with NRPS primers. Some of the amplified genes were confirmed to be involved in secondary metabolite pathways. Using bioinformatic tools their biosynthetic pathways were predicted. The secondary metabolite genomic potential of strains LF1, UC8 and FC18 was assessed using in silico analysis of their genomes. Aqueous and organic extracts of the Planctomycetes were evaluated for their antimicrobial activity against an environmental Escherichia coli, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633 and a clinical isolate of Candida albicans. The screening assays showed a high number of planctomycetes with bioactive extracts revealing antifungal (43 %) and antibacterial (54 %) activity against C. albicans and B. subtilis, respectively. Bioactivity was observed in strains from Rhodopirellula lusitana, R. rubra, R. baltica, Roseimaritima ulvae and Planctomyces brasiliensis. This study confirms the bioactive capacity of Planctomycetes to produce antimicrobial compounds and encourages further studies envisaging molecule isolation and characterization for the possible discovery of new drugs
Economics education : literacy or mind framing? : Evidence from a survey on the social building of trust in Portugal
This paper deals on the issue of whether or not studying economics has a relevant effect on molding the values and attitudes characteristic of the trust-building processes prevailing in a democratic society. Mainstream economics teaching, based on the self-interest model of rational, maximizing, individualistic representative agents, may well cause indoctrinating effects, creating or reinforcing both political conservatism and selfishness values and behaviors among economics students. This result is confirmed by most studies in relevant literature, but it may be otherwise explained by a so-called self-selection effect, suggesting that “economists are born, not made”. In this paper a contribution to this literature is made with more empirical evidence, namely the results of a survey entitled “Social Building of Trust in Portugal”, referring to a considerable diversity of samples (economics students, other students, ordinary citizens of two counties, urban and rural) and being applied in three different years: 2006, 2009 and 2012.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
sociais, consequentes do avanço tecnológico.
sociais e políticas fizeram parte deste progresso e
The last few years have been marked by profound social
changes, a consequence of technological advances. We have
seen the emergence of new technological tools and means of
communication that have created new ways for people to
communicate and inform themselves - increasingly rapid,
dynamic, and constant interactions. A cycle characterized by
the progress of society as a whole.
With the advent of the information society and the
widespread access to digital technologies, social and political
transformations have also been part of this progress and have
conquered new stages, giving rise to new forms of collective
mobilization and activism, in which digital equipment and
media take on an important role. In a time when the concern
with human rights is increasing, the free circulation of
information associated with the use of digital media has
enabled users to use this medium to exercise citizenship.
It is in this context that this dissertation is developed,
presenting a reflection based on the following themes: social
media, social media activism and the influence of activist
graphic design in the participation and adherence to this type
of content.
As we relate these issues, the goal is to answer the following
questions: Can we recognize social media as a place of
opportunity for social transformation? And what influence
do aesthetic elements have, through activist graphic design,
as a form of political and contestatory expression, in the
adherence to this transformation? Will the activist graphic
design and the way the contents are presented, have an
influence in the political participation, in the mentioned
platforms
