    Parasocial and parasocial vicarious contact effects on euro Canadians’ views of aboriginal peoples

    Research on indirect contact suggests that actual contact with a group may not be necessary to promote positive intergroup attitudes. The ingroup, or group with which one identifies, may have more favourable attitudes toward the outgroup, other group, after indirect contact. The current study examined a video intervention that consisted of a control video (no actors), parasocial video (ingroup and outgroup actor always separate), and parasocial vicarious video (ingroup and outgroup actor interacting). Dependent variables were outgroup attitudes and reported efficacy of future interactions with Aboriginal Peoples by Euro-Canadian participants. As predicted, compared to those who viewed the parasocial video, Euro-Canadian participants who viewed the parasocial vicarious video reported more warmth towards Aboriginal peoples. Additionally, compared to those who viewed the control video, Euro-Canadian participants who viewed the parasocial and parasocial vicarious videos desired less social distance from Aboriginal Peoples. Number of outgroup friendships, as well as quality of outgroup friendships, interact with video manipulation on outgroup attitudes. Results offer preliminary evidence for parasocial vicarious contact to influence positive intergroup attitudes.     Computer-Generated Ovaries to Assist Follicle Counting Experiments

    Precise estimation of the number of follicles in ovaries is of key importance in the field of reproductive biology, both from a developmental point of view, where follicle numbers are determined at specific time points, as well as from a therapeutic perspective, determining the adverse effects of environmental toxins and cancer chemotherapeutics on the reproductive system. The two main factors affecting follicle number estimates are the sampling method and the variation in follicle numbers within animals of the same strain, due to biological variability. This study aims at assessing the effect of these two factors, when estimating ovarian follicle numbers of neonatal mice. We developed computer algorithms, which generate models of neonatal mouse ovaries (simulated ovaries), with characteristics derived from experimental measurements already available in the published literature. The simulated ovaries are used to reproduce in-silico counting experiments based on unbiased stereological techniques; the proposed approach provides the necessary number of ovaries and sampling frequency to be used in the experiments given a specific biological variability and a desirable degree of accuracy. The simulated ovary is a novel, versatile tool which can be used in the planning phase of experiments to estimate the expected number of animals and workload, ensuring appropriate statistical power of the resulting measurements.     Multi-band Superconductivity in the Chevrel Phases SnMo6S8 and PbMo6S8

    Sub-Kelvin scanning tunnelling spectroscopy in the Chevrel Phases SnMo6S8 and PbMo6S8 reveals two distinct superconducting gaps with Delta_1 = 3 meV, Delta_2 ~ 1.0 meV and Delta_1 = 3.1 meV, Delta_2 ~ 1.4 meV respectively. The gap distribution is strongly anisotropic, with Delta_2 predominantly seen when scanning across unit-cell steps on the (001) sample surface. The spectra are well-fitted by an anisotropic two-band BCS s-wave gap function. Our spectroscopic data are confirmed by electronic heat capacity measurements which also provide evidence for a twin-gap scenario.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Structural effect of heavy ion irradiation on GdBaCuO ceramics

    The influence of twin boundaries as sinks on defects induced by 480 keV Kr ion irradiation in GdBaCuO crystals was observed in situ at 40 and 300 K. The interaction of the dislocations with the twin boundaries followed on a video recording. A crystalline to amorphous transition was observed above a total fluence of ∼ 4 - 5 x 10^12 Kr/cm2. A comparison between orthorhombic (Os) crystals and a monoclinic structure (Ms) (close to Os and whose parameters were calculated) shows that the behaviour of irradiation-induced extended defects does not depend on a small initial deformation of the orthorhombic cell. In both case, an occasional orthorhombic (or monoclinic) to tetragonal phase transition only occurs when the amorphization process has begun

    Mapping and classifying the seabed of the West Greenland continental shelf

    Marine benthic habitats support a diversity of marine organisms that are both economically and intrinsically valuable. Our knowledge of the distribution of these habitats is largely incomplete, particularly in deeper water and at higher latitudes. The western continental shelf of Greenland is one example of a deep (more than 500 m) Arctic region with limited information available. This study uses an adaptation of the EUNIS seabed classification scheme to document benthic habitats in the region of the West Greenland shrimp trawl fishery from 60°N to 72°N in depths of 61–725 m. More than 2000 images collected at 224 stations between 2011 and 2015 were grouped into 7 habitat classes. A classification model was developed using environmental proxies to make habitat predictions for the entire western shelf (200–700 m below 72°N). The spatial distribution of habitats correlates with temperature and latitude. Muddy sediments appear in northern and colder areas whereas sandy and rocky areas dominate in the south. Southern regions are also warmer and have stronger currents. The Mud habitat is the most widespread, covering around a third of the study area. There is a general pattern that deep channels and basins are dominated by muddy sediments, many of which are fed by glacial sedimentation and outlets from fjords, while shallow banks and shelf have a mix of more complex habitats. This first habitat classification map of the West Greenland shelf will be a useful tool for researchers, management and conservationists

    National audienceThe incidence of prosthesis infections after breast reconstruction is of the order of 4% to 13% according to the literature. In surgical patients, Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is the bacterial species most often responsible for surgical site infections. In cardiac surgery, screening for carriage of S. aureus and preoperative decontamination are carried out routinely before prosthetic surgery. We retrospectively reviewed data from patients at our institution between January 2011 and December 2013. Our series showed that the prosthesis infection rates were in the range of 5.92% in 2008 with an ISO rate of S. aureus 3.61%. Routine screening for prosthetic reconstructions was performed to assess the impact of preoperative decontamination patients in carriers of S. aureus. This screening was done in 381 patients: 17.8% of patients were carriers of S. aureus ; 11 patients have an ISO (or an incidence rate of 2.88%) ; 5 patients have an ISO S. aureus (an incidence of S. aureus ISO 1.3%). The introduction of the screening process, allowed a drop of 5.92% ISO rate at 1.46% with a passage of S. aureus SSI rates of 3, 60% to 0.72%. In the near future, studies are needed to confirm these encouraging results, to demonstrate the efficacy of preoperative decontamination in carriers of S. aureus patients before laying prosthesis

    Prevalence of oropharyngeal beta-lactamase-producing Capnocytophaga spp. in pediatric oncology patients over a ten-year period

    BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of beta-lactamase-producing Capnocytophaga isolates in young children hospitalized in the Pediatric Oncology Department of Hôpital Sud (Rennes, France) over a ten-year period (1993–2002). METHODS: In neutropenic children, a periodic survey of the oral cavity allows a predictive evaluation of the risk of systemic infections by Capnocytophaga spp. In 449 children with cancer, 3,053 samples were collected by oral swabbing and plated on TBBP agar. The susceptibility of Capnocytophaga isolates to five beta-lactams was determined. RESULTS: A total of 440 strains of Capnocytophaga spp. were isolated, 309 (70%) of which were beta-lactamase producers. The beta-lactamase-producing strains were all resistant to cefazolin, 86% to amoxicillin, and 63% to ceftazidime. The proportion of strains resistant to third-generation cephalosporins remained high throughout the ten-year study, while susceptibility to imipenem and amoxicillin combined with clavulanic acid was always conserved. CONCLUSION: These results highlight the risk of antibiotic failure in Capnocytophaga infections and the importance of monitoring immunosuppressed patients and testing for antibiotic susceptibility and beta-lactamase production

    Probabilistic chemotherapy in knee and hip replacement infection: the place of linezolid

    Prosthetic joint infection (PJI) can occur with a wide range of microorganisms and clinical features. After replacement surgery of prosthetic joint, prescription of probabilistic broad-spectrum antimicrobial therapy is usual, while awaiting microbial culture results. The aim of our study was to describe the antibiotic susceptibility of microorganisms isolated from hip and knee PJI. The data were collected to determine the best alternative to the usual combination of piperacillin-tazobactam (TZP) or cefotaxime (CTX) and vancomycin (VAN). Based on a French prospective, multicenter study, we analyzed microbiological susceptibility to antibiotics of 183 strains isolated from patients with confirmed hip or knee PJI. In vitro susceptibility was evaluated: TZP+VAN, TZP+linezolid (LZD), CTX+VAN, and CTX+LZD. We also analyzed resistance to different antibiotics commonly used as oral alternatives. Among the 183 patients with PJI, 62 (34%) had a total knee prosthesis, and 121 (66%) a hip prosthesis. The main identified bacteria were Staphylococcus aureus (32.2% of isolates), coagulase-negative staphylococci (27.3%), Enterobacteriaceae (14.2%), and Streptococcus (13.7%). Infections were polymicrobial for 28 (15.3%) patients. All combinations were highly effective: CTX+VAN, CTX+LZD, TZP+VAN, and TZP+LZD (93.4%, 94%, 98.4%, and 98.9% of all cases respectively). Use of LZD instead of VAN in combination with a broad-spectrum beta-lactam covers almost all of the bacteria isolated in PJI. This association should be considered in probabilistic chemotherapy, as it is particularly easy to use (oral administration and no vancomycin monitoring)

    Analysis of the Zinc Finger Domain of TnpA, a DNA Targeting Protein Encoded by Mobilizable Transposon Tn4555

    The mobilizable transposon Tn4555, found in Bacteroides spp., is an important antibiotic resistance element encoding a broad spectrum beta-lactamase. Tn4555 is mobilized by conjugative transposons such as CTn341 which can transfer the transposon to a wide range of bacterial species where it integrates into preferred sites on the host chromosome. Selection of the preferred target sites is mediated by a DNA-binding protein TnpA which has a prominent zinc finger motif at the N-terminus of the protein. In this report the zinc finger motif was disrupted by site directed mutagenesis in which two cysteine residues were changed to serine residues. Elemental analysis indicated that the wildtype protein but not the mutated protein was able to coordinate zinc at a molar ration of 1/1. DNA binding electrophoretic mobility shift assays showed that the ability to bind the target site DNA was not significantly affected by the mutation but there was about a 50% decrease in the ability to bind single stranded DNA. Consistent with these results, electrophoretic mobility shift assays incorporating zinc chelators did not have a significant affect the binding of DNA target. In vivo, the zinc finger mutation completely prevented transposition/integration as measured in a conjugation assay. This was in contrast to results in which a TnpA knockout was still able to insert into host genomes but there was no preferred target site selection. The phenotype of the zinc finger mutation was not effectively rescued by providing wild-type TnpA in trans. Taken together these results indicated that the zinc finger is not required for DNA binding activity of TnpA but that it does have an important role in transposition and it may mediate protein/protein interactions with integrase or other Tn4555 proteins to facilitate insertion into the preferred sites.
