    This report aims to identify the specific legal and ethical risks posed by the project in relation to the obligations derived from the legal and ethical framework. It includes an Ethical and Societal Impact Assessment and a Data Protection Impact Assessment, which take particular attention to the project research activities related to the creation of the EUMigraTool (EMT) and the processing of migrants' personal data. As a result of these impact assessments, a set of mitigation measures are presented to minimise the identified ethical, societal, and legal risks

    An ancient pathway combining carbon dioxide fixation with the generation and utilization of a sodium ion gradient for ATP synthesis

    Synthesis of acetate from carbon dioxide and molecular hydrogen is considered to be the first carbon assimilation pathway on earth. It combines carbon dioxide fixation into acetyl-CoA with the production of ATP via an energized cell membrane. How the pathway is coupled with the net synthesis of ATP has been an enigma. The anaerobic, acetogenic bacterium Acetobacterium woodii uses an ancient version of this pathway without cytochromes and quinones. It generates a sodium ion potential across the cell membrane by the sodium-motive ferredoxin:NAD oxidoreductase (Rnf). The genome sequence of A. woodii solves the enigma: it uncovers Rnf as the only ion-motive enzyme coupled to the pathway and unravels a metabolism designed to produce reduced ferredoxin and overcome energetic barriers by virtue of electron-bifurcating, soluble enzymes

    D2.5 Report on the Legal, Societal Impact and Ethical Monitoring of the ITFLOWS

    This Deliverable includes insights in the ad hoc and ongoing monitoring process of the project both from an internal and external perspective with the aim of ensuring the implementation of the ITFLOWS Regulatory model at all stages of the project research activities and particularly with regard to the EUMigraTool. For better oversight it distinguishes between data protection perspective (FIZ), the ethical perspective (UAB), the societal perspective otherwise known as the human rights considerations (BUL) and the gender perspective (UAB). It also includes the external and independent monitoring carried out by the Independent Ethics Board, the Data Protection Advisor, and the Independent Gender Committee. This report is the first version of the Report on the legal, societal impact and ethical monitoring of ITFLOWS. As the monitoring process is ongoing, its outcomes will be shared within the project over the course of the project on a regular basis. The overall results and an evaluation of the process will be included in the second and final version of the report in M3

    D2.1 Report on the ITFLOWS International and European Legal Frameworks on Migrants And Refugees and ITFLOWS Ethical Framework

    This report sets the International and EU legal and ethical basis upon which the ITFLOWS research, activities and recommendations will be based. The ITFLOWS project develops tools that will allow carefully selected entities to predict migration flows and will support them to prepare in advance the reception and integration of asylum seekers, refugees and migrants in a coordinated, efficient and effective manner. It will also be used as the basis of ITFLOWS work, all the requirements that the partners will have to fulfil for any action relating to the project. It ensures that the EUMigraTool and all other deliverables will be in line with all International and EU law norms relevant to migration and refugee legislation. It also is the basis for any research and activity facilitating integration. Special focus is paid on the General Data Protection as well as the potential ethical implications that need to be taken into consideration during the ITFLOWS research

    Global reorganization of deep-sea circulation and carbon storage after the last ice age

    Funding information: This work was supported by grants from the National Science Foundation (OCE-2015647 and OCE-2032340 to PAR; OCE- 2032343 to MPH); NERC grant NE/N011716/1 to JWBR and NERC grant NE/M004619/1 to AB.Using new and published marine fossil radiocarbon (14C/C) measurements, a tracer uniquely sensitive to circulation and air-sea gas exchange, we establish several benchmarks for Atlantic, Southern, and Pacific deep-sea circulation and ventilation since the last ice age. We find the most 14C-depleted water in glacial Pacific bottom depths, rather than the mid-depths as they are today, which is best explained by a slowdown in glacial deep-sea overturning in addition to a “flipped” glacial Pacific overturning configuration. These observations cannot be produced by changes in air-sea gas exchange alone, and they underscore the major role for changes in the overturning circulation for glacial deep-sea carbon storage in the vast Pacific abyss and the concomitant drawdown of atmospheric CO2.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Las actividades agropecuarias en Misiones, vienen sufriendo profundas transformaciones que impactan de manera diferencial sobre los trabajadores y sobre los productores agrarios, pero también en el proceso manufacturero y de comercialización. Con el objetivo de identificar y analizar éstas transformaciones recientes, intentaremos generar conocimiento sobre cambios productivos y en la organización del trabajo en encadenamientos agroindustriales del té y la yerba mate, relevar las estrategias económicas de las cooperativas agroindustriales, identificando sus particularidades respecto a la organización del trabajo, a las modalidades de incorporación de tecnologías y normas de calidad, y en relación con las políticas públicas. También investigaremos la incidencia de organizaciones de productores agrarios sobre los cambios en la implementación de políticas agropecuarias, en especial respecto a la producción, comercialización de alimentos y acceso a la tierra. Considerando las interacciones complejas en las transformaciones en curso, al mismo tiempo las limitaciones contextuales y las estrategias de los actores, exploraremos canales de circulación de insumos y de productos, mecanismos de fijación de precios, para analizar relaciones económicas y de poder, así como transferencias entre los distintos sectores. Desde una perspectiva metodológica cualitativa, tomaremos algunas experiencias de producción y comercialización, por parte de pequeños productores en forma asociativa, como referencia empírica para reflexionar sobre las posibilidades y dificultades de las organizaciones agrarias

    Axial forces and bending moments in the loaded rabbit tibia in vivo

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Different animal models are used as fracture models in orthopaedic research prior to implant use in humans, although biomechanical forces can differ to a great extend between species due to variable anatomic conditions, particularly with regard to the gait. The rabbit is an often used fracture model, but biomechanical data are very rare. The objective of the present study was to measure axial forces, bending moments, and bending axis directly in the rabbit tibia <it>in vivo</it>. The following hypothesis was tested: Axial forces and bending moments in the mid-diaphysis of rabbit tibia differ from other experimental animals or indirectly calculated data.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A minifixateur system with 4 force sensors was developed and attached to rabbit tibia (<it>n </it>= 4), which were subsequently ostectomised. Axial forces, bending moments and bending angles were calculated telemetrically during weight bearing in motion between 6 and 42 days post operation.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Highest single values were 201% body weight [% bw] for axial forces and 409% bw cm for bending moments. Whereas there was a continous decrease in axial forces over time after day 10 (<it>P </it>= 0.03 on day 15), a decrease in bending moments was inconsistent (<it>P </it>= 0.03 on day 27). High values for bending moments were frequently, but not consistently, associated with high values for axial forces.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Axial forces in rabbit tibia exceeded axial forces in sheep, and differed from indirectly calculated data. The rabbit is an appropriate fracture model because axial loads and bending moments in rabbit tibia were more closely to human conditions than in sheep tibia as an animal model.</p
