    ClInt: A bilingual Spanish-Catalan spoken corpus of clinical interviews

    In this paper we present ClInt (Clinical Interview), a bilingual Spanish-Catalan spoken corpus that contains 15 hours of clinical interviews. It consists of audio files aligned with multiple-level transcriptions comprising orthographic, phonetic and morphological information, as well as linguistic and extralinguistic encoding. This is a previously non-existent resource for these languages and it offers a wide-ranging exploitation potential in a broad variety of disciplines such as Linguistics, Natural Language Processing and related fields

    Adhesion mechanisms of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae to the porcine respiratory system and biofilm formation

    Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae is a Gram-negative bacterium and the causative agent of porcine pleuropneumonia, a highly contagious disease of pigs characterised by fibrinohaemorrhagic necrotising pneumonia. Although it has been well controlled in some developed countries, outbreaks can occur in pigs of all ages in contact with asymptomatic carriers, leading to significant economic losses to the swine industry due to the high morbidity and mortality rates. Adhesion is a critical step in the colonisation of the swine respiratory tract and the pathogenesis of the porcine pleuropneumonia; however, a literature review of this process is not available to date. Therefore, this review aims to provide information regarding the molecules that have been described in the adhesion of A. pleuropneumoniae to cells and tissues of the porcine respiratory tract. Since adhesion is the first step in biofilm formation, we included a section to describe the genes involved in this process; some of these genes could participate directly or indirectly in the adhesion of A. pleuropneumoniae to the porcine respiratory system. Although the role of biofilms in porcine pleuropneumonia is still not clear, these molecules could be considered in the future as candidates for vaccine development

    Influence of production system and finishing feeding on meat quality of Rubia Gallega calves

    Aim of study: Beef quality is mainly affected by finishing feeding (FF) and production system (PS). The effects of PS (extensive, semi-extensive, traditional and intensive systems) and FF from Rubia Gallega calves were compared in terms of meat quality.Area of study: Galicia (NW Spain)Material and methods: Calves (n=10 per treatment) were slaughtered at nine months of age and meat samples were assessed in terms of meat quality attributes such as physicochemical, nutritional and sensory analysis performed by a trained panel.Main results: Meat chemical composition varied (p<0.01) with PS and FF. The semi-extensive system showed the lowest values (p<0.05) for cooking loss (22.8%) and for shear force (26.0 N) while the extensive system presented the lowest contents of saturated fatty acids (SFA) and the highest contents of linolenic acid (p<0.001). The SFA and polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) contents varied with FF (p<0.05). The lowest and highest values for SFA and PUFA were displayed in extensive group finished with Pasture/Concentrate, meanwhile feedlot group finished with Concentrate/Straw showed and opposite trend. The n-6/n-3 ratio was lower than 4 for extensive and semi-extensive systems (p<0.001). In addition, tenderness and juiciness showed significant differences mainly due to FF.Research highlights: This study showed that meat of calves reared in extensive systems was the healthiest, regarding total fat and fatty acid composition. It can be concluded that finishing feeding, and PS affected meat quality. Hence the potential usefulness of these results is to improve meat quality and safety according to market demands

    El papel del empleo rural no agrícola en las comunidades rurales: un estudio de caso en Tepeji del río, Hidalgo, México

    Rural families are being increasingly incorporated to activitiesdifferent to the agricultural ones, since these activities representan important support to compensate the low agricultural incomes.On the other hand, the tighter interrelation between thecountryside and the city facilitates the participation in theemployment market and in the formal and informal commerce,widening the development capacities of the rural economies, andcausing a decrease on the relative importance of the agriculturalincome within the total rural income. The rural income is nolonger equivalent to the agricultural income in the Mexicancountryside. In this essay we analyze the role of the nonagricultural rural employment (NARE) through the resultsobtained by means of interviews and the application of a surveyto 70 families of the communities of Sta. María Magdalena andLa Cañada de Madero, both located in the municipality of Tepejidel Río de Ocampo in the state of Hidalgo, México. Also, thedifferent sources of non agricultural employment and the incomederiving from them, which represents more than 84% of the totalincome, are examined. lncome obtained through migration issignificative for some families; nevertheless, the remunerationscoming from local markets have the highest compensating impactof the low agricultural income. The households with better activesof human capital have higher capacity to assign their members todifferent markets; hence, the diversification of employments occursin the households with better demographic characteristics. Thechildren of common land owners benefit more than their parentsof non agricultural employments, since age and schooling levelare key factors to accede to better remunerated employmentsoutside agriculture.Las familias rurales se incorporan cada vez más a actividadesdistintas de la agricultura, porque representan un apoyo importantepara compensar los bajos ingresos agrícolas. Por otro lado,la mayor interrelación entre el campo y la ciudad facilita la participaciónen los mercados laboral y de comercio formal e informal,ampliando las capacidades de desarrollo de las economíasrurales, y causando una disminución en la importancia relativadel ingreso agrícola dentro del ingreso rural total. El ingresorural ya no equivale al ingreso agrícola en el campo mexicano.En este ensayo se analiza el papel del empleo rural no agrícola(ERNA) a través de los resultados obtenidos mediante entrevistasy la aplicación de una encuesta a 70 familias de las comunidadesde Sta. María Magdalena y la Cañada de Madero, ambas ubicadasen el municipio de Tepeji del Río de Ocampo en el estado deHidalgo, México. Se examinan las distintas fuentes de empleo noagrícola y el ingreso que de ellas se deriva, el cual representamás del 84% del ingreso total. El ingreso obtenido a través de lamigración es significativo para algunas familias; sin embargo, lasremuneraciones provenientes de los mercados locales tienen elmayor impacto compensador del bajo ingreso agrícola. Los hogarescon mejores activos de capital humano tienen mayor capacidadpara asignar a sus miembros a diferentes mercados, por loque la diversificación de empleos se presenta en los hogares conmejores características demográficas. Los hijos de los ejidatariosse benefician más que sus padres de los empleos no agrícolas,debido a que la edad y el nivel escolar son factores clave paraacceder a empleos mejor remunerados fuera de la agricultura

    Generation, annotation and analysis of ESTs from Trichoderma harzianum CECT 2413

    BACKGROUND: The filamentous fungus Trichoderma harzianum is used as biological control agent of several plant-pathogenic fungi. In order to study the genome of this fungus, a functional genomics project called "TrichoEST" was developed to give insights into genes involved in biological control activities using an approach based on the generation of expressed sequence tags (ESTs). RESULTS: Eight different cDNA libraries from T. harzianum strain CECT 2413 were constructed. Different growth conditions involving mainly different nutrient conditions and/or stresses were used. We here present the analysis of the 8,710 ESTs generated. A total of 3,478 unique sequences were identified of which 81.4% had sequence similarity with GenBank entries, using the BLASTX algorithm. Using the Gene Ontology hierarchy, we performed the annotation of 51.1% of the unique sequences and compared its distribution among the gene libraries. Additionally, the InterProScan algorithm was used in order to further characterize the sequences. The identification of the putatively secreted proteins was also carried out. Later, based on the EST abundance, we examined the highly expressed genes and a hydrophobin was identified as the gene expressed at the highest level. We compared our collection of ESTs with the previous collections obtained from Trichoderma species and we also compared our sequence set with different complete eukaryotic genomes from several animals, plants and fungi. Accordingly, the presence of similar sequences in different kingdoms was also studied. CONCLUSION: This EST collection and its annotation provide a significant resource for basic and applied research on T. harzianum, a fungus with a high biotechnological interest

    AMIGaS - Motivational Activities for Gender Equality in STEM

    En el marco del proyecto de innovación docente, se han realizado una serie de actividades de promoción de la mujer en estudios y empleos de disciplinas STEM, acrónimo de los términos en inglés Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (Ciencia, Tecnología, Ingeniería y Matemáticas). El objetivo ha sido contribuir a que las mujeres puedan obtener mejores oportunidades de trabajo y no se mantengan alejadas de los cambios económicos y sociales que conllevará la industria del futuro, marcada por la convergencia de tecnologías digitales, físicas y biológicas, y que cambiará el mundo tal y como lo conocemos. Para ello se han realizado una serie de seminarios que han consistido en apoyar la participación de mujeres en el ámbito científico-tecnológico. Consiguiendo una concepción del alumnado femenino de las disciplinas de Ciencia e Ingeniería sobre el trabajo que desempeñan mujeres cuyas trayectorias profesionales son de alta relevancia en el ámbito tecnológico. Con esta propuesta se ha contribuido a la lucha contra los estereotipos y que el acceso de la mujer a estas materias crezca al mismo nivel al que es demandado, ya que la tecnología se encuentra en todos los niveles de la sociedad actual.Within the framework of the educational innovation project, a series of activities have been carried out to promote women in studies and jobs in STEM disciplines, an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. The aim has been to help women to obtain better job opportunities and not to stay away from the economic and social changes that the industry of the future, marked by the convergence of digital, physical and biological technologies, will bring, will bring, and will change the world as we know it. To this end, a series of seminars have been held which have consisted of supporting the participation of women in the scientific-technological field. Achieving a conception of the female student body of the disciplines of Science and Engineering on the work carried out by women whose professional trajectories are of high relevance in the technological field. This proposal has contributed to the fight against stereotypes and to ensure that women's access to these subjects grows to the same level as that at which they are demanded since technology is found at all levels of today's society

    Geomorphology of the Avilés Canyon System, Cantabrian Sea (BayofBiscay)

    The Avilés Canyon System (ACS) is a complex, structurally-controlled canyon and valley system constituted by three main canyons of different morphostructural character. They are, from east to west: La Gaviera Canyon, El Corbiro Canyon and Avilés Canyon. In addition to this ACS, a new canyon has been surveyed: Navia Canyon. We present for the first time a high resolution multibeam map showing with great detail the morphological and structural complexity of this segment of the Cantabrian margin. ACS presents a tectonic imprint marked by NW-SE, NNE-SSW and E-W structures. The morphology of their reaches as well as their single mouth, in addition to some rock dredges in their major valleys, demonstrates active down-slope flushing. The continental shelf shows a flat, uniform slope with local and well defined rock outcrops south of Aviles Canyon head. Sedimentary zones are limited, showing thin unconsolidated sedimentary cover. Strong continental margin water dynamics avoid thicker sediment deposition, being littoral sedimentary dynamics responsible for transport to the canyons heads and conduit to the Biscay Abyssal plain. Biscay Abyssal Plain shows evidence of a strong westward current affecting the surveyed strip of this more than 10 km wide plain. Presence of two parallel deep sea channels, erosive scarps, and erosion of gully divides on the lower slope, may indicate that this is part of the distal fan at the termination of the large turbiditic system fed by Cap Ferret, Capbreton and other large canyons (Santander, Torrelavega, Lastres and Llanes) to the west of ACS.Instituto Español de OceanografíaVersión del edito

    [Resumen] El informe sobre criterios de calidad específicos de recursos materiales y profesorado para el título de grado de Fisioterapia ha sido elaborado por la Asociación Española de Fisioterapeutas que convocó, con tal finalidad, a una comisión de expertos en Educación en Fisioterapia. El documento, realizado a propuesta de la Dirección General de Universidades en diciembre de 2004, tiene por objetivo el establecer los criterios mínimos de recursos materiales y humanos derivados de la especificidad de la titulación de Fisioterapia, que permita cubrir las nuevas demandas de la sociedad. En relación a los recursos materiales, se ha procurado darle un suficiente grado de especificación cuantitativa y cualitativa a los instrumentos que constituyen los recursos materiales específicos. La intención es, así mismo, facilitar su valoración en el momento de acreditar la titulación. Se abordan, por una parte, los recursos específicos de la titulación para la docencia teórico-práctica en el centro, dentro de los laboratorios destinados a tal efecto. Por otra parte, se definen las características o perfil de los centros sociosanitarios donde debe impartirse la formación clínica del alumno. En relación a los recursos humanos, se hace especial hincapié en el perfil y la experiencia del profesorado para la docencia, así como en el ratio profesor-alumno en la formación práctica y en la formación clínica.[Abstract] The report about specific quality criteria of resources material (items) and teaching profession to obtain the Physiotherapy Grade, has been elaborated by the Spanish Association of Physiotherapists, which aimed to convoke a Physiotherapy Education experts commission. The document was carried out on Universities General Chairmene’s proposal, aiming to establish the minimum criteria of human and Material (Items) resources, derived from the specific Physical Therapy Grade (Diploma), Which may cover the latest Society requirements. According to the Material resources, there has been a serious attempt to give the instruments, which constitute the specific material resources, an appropriate degree, quantitative and qualitative specification. The main intention by itself, consists of providing its assessment when the time to accredit the title comes. On the one hand the specific resources of the Physiotherapy Grade for the Theoric-practical Teaching in the Centre are taken up even in the laboratories aimed to get such goal. On the other hand we define the characteristics or the profile of the social. Health centres, where Pupils’ Clinical Education, must be carried out. Relating to the Human Resources, we do underline the Teaching Profession experience and profile, as well as the rate Teacher-Pupil, both in the practical Training and the Clinical Education, too

    Lesion Index Titration Using Contact-Force Technology Enables Safe and Effective Radiofrequency Lesion Creation at the Root of the Aorta and Pulmonary Artery

    BACKGROUND: Ablation of some myocardial substrates requires catheter-based radiofrequency delivery at the root of a great artery. We studied the safety and efficacy parameters associated with catheter-based radiofrequency delivery at the root of the aorta and pulmonary artery. METHODS: Thirty-six pigs underwent in-vivo catheter-based ablation under continuous contact-force and lesion index (power, contact-force, and time) monitoring during 60-s radiofrequency delivery with an open-irrigated tip catheter. Twenty-eight animals were allocated to groups receiving 40 W (n=9), 50 W (n=10), or 60 W (n=9) radiofrequency energy, and acute (n=22) and chronic (n=6) arterial wall damage was quantified by multiphoton microscopy in ex vivo samples. Adjacent myocardial lesions were quantified in parallel samples. The remaining 8 pigs were used to validate safety and efficacy parameters. RESULTS: Acute collagen and elastin alterations were significantly associated with radiofrequency power, although chronic assessment revealed vascular wall recovery in lesions without steam pop. The main parameters associated with steam pops were median peak temperature >42°C and impedance falls >23 ohms. Unlike other parameters, lesion index values of 9.1 units (interquartile range, 8.7-9.8) were associated with the presence of adjacent myocardial lesions in both univariate ( P=0.03) and multivariate analyses ( P=0.049; odds ratio, 1.99; 95% CI, 1.02-3.98). In the validation group, lesion index values using 40 W over a range of contact-forces correlated with the size of radiofrequency lesions (R2=0.57; P=0.03), with no angiographic or histopathologic signs of coronary artery damage. CONCLUSIONS: Lesion index values obtained during 40 W radiofrequency applications reliably monitor safe and effective lesion creation at the root of the great arteries.This study was supported by the Fundación Interhospitalaria para la Investigación Cardiovascular (FIC) and the Heart Rhythm Section of the Spanish Society of Cardiology.
