If the idea of the Periplus-basis is rejected, an examination of the contents of the poem allows us to justify the original placing of those passages suspected by the • supporters of the traditional theory, since Avienus does not describe the geographical subjects according to the unidirectional rule, but based on a technique that may be designated as «scenographic»

Transesterification of rapeseed oil with methanol in the presence of various co-solvents

Comunicação apresentada no «Third International Symposium on Energy from Biomass and Waste», Venice(Italy), Novembro 2010In this study, transesterification of rapeseed oil using various co-solvents(diethyl ether (DEE), dibutyl ether (diBE), tert-butyl methyl ether (tBME), diisopropyl ether (diIPE), tetrahydrofuran (THF), and acetone) was studied. The variables affecting the ester yield during transesterification reaction, such as catalyst content, methanol:oil molar ratio, methanol:cosolvent molar ratio, co-solvent type, catalysts type, agitation rate and reaction temperature were investigated. The process was monitored by gas chromatography, determining the concentration of the methyl esters. Biodiesel was characterized according to ISO norms. Among the studied co-solvents, the DEE and tBME take to the best results, however diIPE, diBE and acetone hardly improve the obtained results using only methanol. Within the range of studied variability, the rest of variables do not exercise a very significant influence. The best results are obtained with 0.7 % of KOH, a molar ratio methanol/oil of 9:1, a molar ratio co-solvent/methanol 1:1, an agitation rate of 700 rpm and a temperature of 30 º

A note on Poisson goodness-of-fit tests for ionizing radiation induced chromosomal aberration samples

Purpose: To present Poisson exact goodness-of-fit tests as alternatives and complements to the asymptotic u-test, which is the most widely used in cytogenetic biodosimetry, to decide whether a sample of chromosomal aberrations in blood cells comes from an homogeneous or inhomogeneous exposure. Materials and methods: Three Poisson exact goodness-of-fit test from the literature are introduced and implemented in the R environment. A Shiny R Studio application, named GOF Poisson, has been updated for the purpose of giving support to this work. The three exact tests and the u-test are applied in chromosomal aberration data from clinical and accidental radiation exposure patients. Results: It is observed how the u-test is not an appropriate approximation in small samples with small yield of chromosomal aberrations. Tools are provided to compute the three exact tests, which is not as trivial as the implementation of the u-test. Conclusions: Poisson exact goodness-of-fit tests should be considered jointly to the u-test for detecting inhomogeneous exposures in the cytogenetic biodosimetry practice

Data aggregator implemented through industrial gateway IOT 2050 for smart microgrid

[EN] This paper describes the operation and implementation of a Data Aggregator based on an Industrial Gateway (DAIG) for the storage and transmission of information from an experimental Smart microgrid hybridised with green hydrogen. This DAIG consists of a Siemens IOT 2050, a commercial device that combines physical characteristics such as robustness and open-source software. To achieve this objective, each subsystem involved in the microgrid has a set of sensors and a Data Acquisition Device (DAD) to obtain the relevant logical magnitudes of its operation. The IOT 2050 serves as a centralised system, communicating via Modbus TCP/IP with each DAD and storing the data read in a local database by means of a Python script. Finally, as an example of the application of the designed infrastructure, an IoT software is implemented to visualise the data stored in the DAIG

Plant Polyphenols in Obesity and Obesity-Associated Metabolic Disorders: A Narrative Review of Resveratrol and Flavonoids Upon the Molecular Basis of Inflammation

Background: The epidemic of obesity, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is currently unsustainable for Public Health systems, and preventive and therapeutic approaches are urgently sought to improve health outcomes for affected individuals. Aim: In this study, we aim to further explore and synthetize available evidence on the effects of selected plant polyphenols (PP) upon molecular mechanisms associated with oxidative stress and inflammatory pathways. We also aim to briefly discuss PP supplementation as therapeutic tool for the prevention and management of prevalent obesity-associated metabolic disorders. Methods: This narrative review was performed in the PubMed database in June 2018 without restriction of publication period. Results: PP influence a broad range of cell signalling pathways; by modulating the activity of nuclear transcription factors, PP modulate gene expression and antioxidant responses, as well as inflammation and its resolution. Several interventional studies have investigated the effects of PP supplementation in a variety of sample populations, but no consensus has yet been reached regarding composition, dosage or course of treatment for therapeutic purposes. However, overall results tend to suggest a positive effect of PP in either improving metabolic profile or minimizing negative disease outcomes. Careful consideration on PP supplementation is paramount; adverse effects have already been described. Conclusion: The successful prevention and management or treatment of obesity-associated metabolic disorders may be achieved through an effective multidisciplinary approach to tackle their modifiable risk factors. A balanced diet, which includes naturally occurring sources of PP associated with lower consumption of ultra-processed foods, is a relevant approach for the positive health outcomes desired
