Chilean higher education managers’ information systems acceptance and quality management perceptions

Chilean higher education institutions face pressure to meet quality management (QM) standards and to use educational management information systems (EMIS) for managing the information related to academic activities. This doctoral research addressed the link between the use of EMIS in higher education and the QM processes, on which insufficient research was conducted so far. Against the background of the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology and within the QM conceptual framework, I aimed to reduce this research gap by exploring the relationship between higher education managers’ EMIS acceptance and QM perceptions, and by identifying specific manager profiles. In Study 1, a systematic review of Chilean literature suggested a close relationship between QM, accountability, and the use of EMIS. However, difficulties in implementation and long-term planning were noted. In Study 2, an instrument to assess perceptions about QM and accreditation was validated. Using this instrument, three different types of managers were identified by a cluster analysis conducted in Study 3: “Elders”, “Mediators”, and “Worker Bees.” These results are in line with previous research, as EMIS usage differs according to a person's position, individual traits, and preferences. Accordingly, a customized training program was recommended, which considered individual needs, staff plans, and the identified manager profiles. As higher education institutions developed plans to invest in more EMIS licenses and implement training, the aforementioned factors may help reduce investment costs. Additionally, the results of this doctoral research lay the ground for designing mass-customized manager training for managers based on their specific profiles and the organization's characteristics.Chilenische Hochschuleinrichtungen stehen unter dem Druck, Qualitätsmanagement (QM)-Standards zu erfüllen und Bildungsmanagement-Informationssysteme (EMIS) zu verwenden, um die auf akademische Aktivitäten bezogenen Informationen zu verwalten. Diese Dissertation setzt am bisher nur unzureichend erforschten Zusammenhang zwischen dem Einsatz von EMIS in der Hochschulbildung und den QM-Prozessen an. Vor dem Hintergrund der Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology und im Rahmen des QM-Konzepts wurde der Zusammenhang zwischen der EMIS-Akzeptanz von Hochschulmanagern und der QM-Wahrnehmung untersucht und spezifische Führungsprofile identifiziert. In Studie 1 deutete ein systematischer Überblick der chilenischen Literatur auf einen engen Zusammenhang zwischen QM, Akkreditierung und der Verwendung von EMIS hin. Allerdings wurden Schwierigkeiten bei der Umsetzung und langfristigen Planung der Qualitätsmaßnahmen festgestellt. Davon ausgehend wurde in Studie 2 ein Instrument zur Erfassung der Wahrnehmung von QM und Akkreditierung validiert. Mit diesem Instrument wurden in Studie 3 drei verschiedene Managertypen mittels Clusteranalyse identifiziert. Darauf aufbauend wurde abschließend das Konzept eines maßgeschneiderten Schulungsprogramms vorgeschlagen, das individuelle Bedürfnisse und Personalpläne berücksichtigt. Da Hochschuleinrichtungen planen in mehr EMIS-Lizenzen und Schulungen zu investieren, können die oben genannten Faktoren dazu beitragen, die Investitionskosten zu senken. Darüber hinaus legen die Ergebnisse dieser Arbeit den Grundstein für die Entwicklung massenindividualisierter Schulungsprogramme für Hochschulmanager auf Basis ihres spezifischen Profils und der Charakteristika der Organisation

A design process for harware/software system co-design and its application to designing a reconfigurable FPGA

This paper is going to address the topic of hardware/software systems co-design. The paper will develop two points of view. First, it provides a system-theoretical layout on the problem of designing hardware-software systems. This layout will enable the designer to proceed systematically in optimizing the tradeoff between the desired functionality, available resources and operating conditions. Second, the paper will describe an application of some of the theoretical principles to the design of an embedded automotive system built on a low-cost FPGA

Una arquitectura manierista inédita de Gian Giacomo Palearo Fratino. La iglesia de la Purísima Concepción de Melilla (1579-1608)

It is not usual to be able to document in detail a mannerist temple which, until now, has not been sufficiently studied and whose origins were unknown. The Spanish expansion in the Mediterranean allowed many Italian engineers to take part in building walls and cities, and both Emperor Charles V and his son, King Philip II, counted on these engineers’ experience and knowledge.Melilla is one of the North African cities with an intense presence of Italian engineers. This city would be the place where, a new temple commissioned by Philip II, would be erected by the end of the 16th century. The person in charge of designing the temple would be the King’s engineer Giacomo Palearo Fratino. It is important to point out that these engineers mainly built walls, bastions and defence towers. They are outstanding designs as the one we have mentinoned before, which is also is Fratino’s only known church.The clear Italian origins of the temple still prevail nowdays since most of its structure survives despite the Baroque enlargements. This might be the reason why there are some references to 16th century Italian treatises, mostly to Giacomo Barozzi Vignola or Sebastiano Serlio. These references are made evident, not only in the design of the façades and the inner arches but also in the mathematical proportions used in the construction of the temple, where the Golden Rectangle is not absent.Un’inedita architettura manierista di Gian Giacomo Palearo Fratino. La Chiesa della Purísima Concepción di Melilla (1579-1608)A seguito dell´espansione spagnola lungo il Mediterraneo, l´imperatore Carlo V e poi suo figlio, Filippo ll, si rivolsero a ingegneri italiani per la realizzazione di mura e città, affidandosi alla loro esperienza e conoscenza. Una delle città nordafricane con un´intensa presenza di ingegneri italiani fu Melilla. Qui, alla fine del XVI secolo fu eretta una chiesa per volontà di Filippo ll, fino a oggi poco studiata e di cui non si conosceva l’attribuzione. Le ricerche svolte hanno potuto individuare il nome del progettista in Giacomo Palearo Fratino. È importante notare che si tratta di un’opera che fuoriesce dal campo usuale di attività dell’ingegnere, generalmente limitato alla costruzione di mura, bastioni e difese: questa è infatti la sua unica chiesa conosciuta. L’impianto originario è stato conservato in buona parte della sua struttura, nonostante gli ampliamenti barocchi, e sono visibili riferimenti a trattatisti italiani del XVI secolo, come Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola o Sebastiano Serlio, nel disegno dei portici o degli archi interni, oltre che nel sistema di proporzionamento basato sul rettangolo aureo.No resulta habitual poder documentar con precisión un templo manierista que, hasta el momento, no había sido suficimente estudiado y del que se desconocía su filiación. La expansión española a lo largo del Mediterráneo incluyendo muchos ingenieros italianos participaran en la construcción de murallas y ciudades, y tanto el emperador Carlos V como su hijo, el rey Felipe II, contaron con su experiencia y conocimientos.Una de las ciudades norteafricanas con intensa presencia de ingenieros italianos, Melilla, va a ser el lugar donde se erija, a finales del siglo XVI, a nuevo templo por expreso deseo de Felipe II. La persona encargada de realizar la traza no sería otra que el ingeniero mayor del rey, Giacomo Palearo Fratino. Es importante señalar que la tarea de estos ingenieros señía principalmente a la construcción de murallas, baluartes y defensas, mientras que son más excepcionales arquitecturas como la que nos ocupa. En el caso concreto de Fratino es su única iglesia conocida.La filiación del templo italiana la mantiene en nuestros días, al conservarse buena parte de su estructura a pesar de las amplificciones barrocas. Es, por ello, que aparecen referencias a la tratadística italiana del siglo XVI, en los casos de Giacomo Barozzi Vignola o Sebastiano Serlio, que se materializan en el diseño de las portadas o de las arcadas interiores. Todo ello, sin contar el sistema de proporciones matemáticas utilizado en su construcción, de donde está presente el rectángulo áureo

Reformas en la capilla mayor de la iglesia de la Victoria de Orán (Argelia): el patronazgo del ingeniero militar Juan Martín Zermeño

El presente trabajo aborda el estudio de una parte del patrimonio artístico religioso de la antigua plaza hispana de Orán (Argelia). En concreto, la capilla mayor de la desaparecida iglesia de la Victoria conforme a las reformas que experimentó durante la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII, a partir del papel desempeñado, como promotor, del ingeniero militar y entonces gobernador Juan Martín Zermeño. Los pormenores de dicho proceso, la implicación de los artistas, la materia económica, la adquisición del mobiliario y el componente decorativo, conformarán el eje vertebral del estudio en cuestión.
