    School plays a fundamental role in the development of critical and reflective citizens, as well as in preparing them for entry into higher education (university). It is therefore necessary that teachers are constantly updated and use strategies for effective teaching and learning. In science, this is increasingly important, due to the current rapid development of knowledge. The aim of this article is to report the experience of a workshop held in order to promote the continuing education of science teachers from primary and secondary public schools. The workshop provided the teachers with new experiences in the area of Sensory Physiology, enabling them to understand that the practical experience of course contents provides better understanding of the topics and assists the learning process by stimulating the use of innovative educational methodologies. These types of initiatives are extremely important for the continuing education of teachers. La escuela tiene un papel fundamental en la formación de ciudadanos críticos y reflexivos y también los prepara para el ingreso a la educación superior. Por lo tanto, es necesario que los profesores siempre se actualicen y utilicen estrategias para la enseñanza y el aprendizaje efectivos. En la ciencia esto es cada vez más necesario, visto el dinamismo actual de los conocimientos. Por lo tanto, este artículo tiene como objetivo informar  la experiencia de un taller realizado con el fin de promover la formación continua de los profesores de ciencias de la educación pública primaria y secundaria. El taller proporcionó a los profesores  nuevas experiencias en el campo de Fisiología Sensorial, permitiéndoles entender que la experiencia práctica de los contenidos permite una mejor comprensión de ellos mismos y facilita el proceso de aprendizaje y que, de manera simple, se puede innovar en las metodologías de educación.     Intrahippocampal infusion of crotamine isolated from Crotalus durissus terrificus alters plasma and brain biochemical parameters

Here we sought to investigate the inflammatory and toxicological effects induced by the intrahippocampal administration of crotamine isolated from Crotalus whole venom. Adult rats received an intrahippocampal infusion of crotamine or vehicle and were euthanized 24 h or 21 days after infusion. Plasma and brain tissue were collected for biochemical analysis. Complete blood count, creatinine, urea, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT), glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT), creatine-kinase (CK), creatine kinase-muscle B (CK-MB) and oxidative parameters (assessed by DNA damage and micronucleus frequency in leukocytes, lipid peroxidation and protein carbonyls in plasma and brain) were quantified. Unpaired and paired t-tests were used for comparisons between saline and crotamine groups, and within groups (24 h vs. 21 days), respectively. After 24 h crotamine infusion promoted an increase of urea, GOT, GPT, CK, and platelets values (p ≤ 0.01), while red blood cells, hematocrit and leukocytes values decreased (p ≤ 0.01). Additionally, 21 days after infusion crotamine group showed increased creatinine, leukocytes, TBARS (plasma and brain), carbonyl (plasma and brain) and micronucleus compared to the saline-group (p ≤ 0.01). Our findings show that crotamine infusion alter hematological parameters and cardiac markers, as well as oxidative parameters, not only in the brain, but also in the blood, indicating a systemic pro-inflammatory and toxicological activity.     This work describes the "Extension program for the divulgation of physiology in the school context by use of information and communication technologies (ICTs)". Public basic education teachers were trained to use ICTs and innovative practices such as experimentation in their classes. We discuss the integration of these new methods in a school pedagogical project, as well as the issue of investment by teachers in their continuing education in order to provide public education that is more creative and interdisciplinary. The result was positive, because all participants reported that they felt able to work with ICTs and to begin the implementation of new teaching methods in their classrooms.Este estudio reporta actividades del "programa de extensión para difundir la fisiología en el ámbito escolar a través del uso de tecnologías de la información y la comunicación (TIC)". Los maestros de educación básica pública han sido capacitados para utilizar las TIC y las prácticas innovadoras, tales como la experimentación, en sus clases. Se discute la integración de estos nuevos métodos pedagógicos en las escuelas y también la cuestión de la inversión por los profesores en su formación continua con el fin de calificar la educación pública y hacerla más creativa e interdisciplinaria. Hemos tenido un resultado positivo, ya que todos los participantes informaron que se sentían capaces de trabajar con las TIC y empezar a aplicar nuevos métodos de enseñanza en sus clases.Este estudo relata o “programa de extensão para difusão da fisiologia no contexto escolar através do uso das tecnologias de informação e comunicação (TICs)”. Docentes da rede pública de Educação Básica foram capacitados para a utilização das TICs e de práticas inovadoras, como a experimentação, em suas aulas. Discutimos a inserção desses novos métodos no projeto pedagógico das escolas e também a questão do investimento por parte dos professores em sua formação continuada, visando qualificar o ensino público e torná-lo mais criativo e interdisciplinar. Tivemos um resultado positivo, pois todos os docentes participantes relataram que se sentiram aptos para trabalharem com as TICs e começar a implementar novos métodos de ensino em suas aulas.

    Physiology is a key component of health undergraduate courses’ curriculum. Several authors cite the poor performance of students in courses that involve the life sciences, as physiology. Thus, innovations that facilitate the process of teaching and learning are increasingly necessary. In this sense, the use of technologies that facilitate the students’ knowledge construction and encourage them to be an active part of this construction is very important. Our proposal sought to encourage students to participate in discussion forums on topics of general interest, related to physiology, created in Moodle virtual environment in order to encourage them to correlate the knowledge worked in the physiology classroom with their daily lives, and make them an active part of their knowledge building. We verify from the perceptions of students that the proposal was effective, providing ways to students establish a relationship between the content and their daily lives and encouraging their critical thinking.A fisiologia é um componente chave para currículo dos cursos de graduação da área da saúde. Vários autores citam o mau desempenho dos alunos em disciplinas que envolvem as ciências biológicas, como a fisiologia. Assim, as inovações que facilitam o processo de ensino e aprendizagem são cada vez mais necessárias. Neste sentido, o uso de tecnologias que facilitam a construção do conhecimento pelos alunos e incentivam o aluno a ser uma parte ativa nesta construção é importante. Nossa proposta procurou incentivar os alunos a participar de fóruns de discussão em torno de tópicos de interesse geral, relacionados á fisiologia, criados no ambiente virtual Moodle, a fim de encorajá-los a correlacionar o conhecimento de fisiologia trabalhado em sala de aula com suas vidas diárias, e torná-los uma parte ativa na construção de seus conhecimentos. Verificamos a partir das percepções dos alunos que a proposta foi eficaz, provendo oportunidades aos estudantes para que eles estabelecessem uma relação entre o conteúdo e a sua vida diária, e incentivando o pensamento crítico

Particularly, these neurotransmitters are important modulators of memory processes. Therefore, in this study we investigated the effects of crotamine infusion on persistence of memory in rats. We verified that the intrahippocampal infusion of crotamine (1 μg/μl; 1 μl/side) improved the persistence of object recognition and aversive memory. By other side, the intrahippocampal infusion of the toxin did not alter locomotor and exploratory activities, anxiety or pain threshold. These results demonstrate a future prospect of using crotamine as potential pharmacological tool to treat diseases involving memory impairment, although it is still necessary more researches to better elucidate the crotamine effects on hippocampus and memory. © 2014 Elsevier Inc.
