    Get PDF
Background The objective of this systematic review was to determine the effectiveness and safety of propranolol compared to placebo or usual care for improving clinical relevant outcomes in severely burned patients (TBSA \u3e20%). Methods Relevant articles from randomized controlled trials were identified by a literature search in MEDLINE, EMBASE, and CENTRAL. We included trials involving patients with a severe burn (\u3e20% of total body surface area affected). Trials were eligible if they evaluated propranolol and compared to usual care or placebo. Two investigators independently assessed articles for inclusion and exclusion criteria and selected studies for the final analysis. We conducted a meta-analysis using a random-effects model. Results We included ten studies in our systematic review. These studies randomized a total of 1236 participants. There were no significant differences between propranolol and placebo with respect to mortality (RD −0.02 [95% CI −0.06 to 0.02]), sepsis (RD −0.03 [95% CI −0.09 to 0.04]), and the overall hospital stay (MD −0.37 [−4.52 to 3.78]). Propranolol-treated adults had a decrease in requirements of blood transfusions (MD −185.64 [95% CI −331.06 to −40.43]) and a decreased heart rate (MD −26.85 [95% CI −39.95 to −13.75]). Conclusions Our analysis indicates that there were no differences in mortality or sepsis in severely burned patients treated with propranolol compared with those who had usual care or placebo. However, the use of propranolol in these patients resulted in lower requirements of blood transfusion and lower values of heart rate. The evidence synthesized in this systematic review is limited to conclude that propranolol reduces the length of hospital stay among severely burned patients. Future trials should assess the impact of propranolol on clinically relevant outcomes such as mortality and adverse events

This paper is based on a descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out under the quantitative approach to know the Quality of Work Life of employees in a physical disability condition regarding to a group of people without disabilities hired directly in some companies in the city of Bogotá. The CVT-GOHISALO instrument was implemented, which has the levels of reliability and consistency to achieve the objective. Fifty workers participated in this investigation: 25 who were in a condition of physical disability and 25 without a condition of disability who work in similar positions in companies of various economic sectors. The overall risk profile for CVT obtained for both study groups indicates that the perception of CVT is similar in six dimensions. Despite this, in the Institutional Support for Work one of the dimension, that make it up (P.44) indicates a statistically significant difference in the average obtained in both groups Therefore the conditions that are offered in the work place and, provided by superiors as well as the perception of the treatment received, a differentiating element in one of the items of this dimension, there is also a statistically significant difference in the averages of items 25 and 55 obtained in the Leisure time Administration dimension related about the need to take work home and planned activities outside working hours.Magíster en Seguridad y Salud en el TrabajoMaestrí

This is an open access article distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited.Universities are important organizations in what concerns the creation and improvement of health and wellbeing, thus healthy universities represent a key application of the health-promoting settings approach. The healthy Universities concept has a strong theoretical basis, and it appears appealing amongst universities worldwide. However, the way in which the approach has been implemented remains poorly grounded in theory. This systematic review aims to describe how universities have implemented the Healthy Universities concept in different cultures. In order to achieve this aim, we analyzed the following aspects of the implementation of the Health Promoting University: (a) definition of Healthy University; (b) priority areas of action; (c) subject matters; (d) projects and coordination; and (e) project evaluation and possible results. PsycINFO, ISI Web of Knowledge, ISI Proceedings, PubMed, Medline, Lilacs and Scielo were searched for articles on Health Promoting Universities, published between 1997 and 2017. Studies detailing the implementation of a Health Promoting University approach were included. Results: Fourteen studies were identified for in-depth analysis. Of those, four were theoretical papers, and ten were intervention studies. The programs described in the selected studies are mostly based on the guidelines of the Edmonton Charter. They incorporated the main areas of action and subject matters proposed by the Healthy Universities framework. The implementation of healthy policies and the incorporation of health promotion in the curriculum remain challenging. The review suggests that most of the universities work towards similar goals, relying on the Healthy Universities framework, yet that the way in which initiatives are implemented depends on the context.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Beyond the 2008 Great Recession: Economic factors and electoral support for the radical left in Europe

    Get PDF
One of the most striking political developments occurring during the Great Recession has been the growth of the radical left in some European countries. Though the literature is far from conclusive, it has generally been argued that the economy is not a main reason driving people’s support for non-mainstream parties (particularly the Greens and the radical right). In this article, we contend that this is not the case for radical left parties, which despite pursuing other agendas do still compete very strongly on economic issues. Using individual-level data for 56 elections taking place between 1996 and 2016 in 15 European countries we find a positive effect of unemployment on support for radical left parties, and only very weak evidence that this effect depends on voters’ ideology or whether the mainstream left (Social Democrats) is in office. We conclude that unemployment enables the radical left to increase its support regardless of the political context, but does not significantly change by itself the ideological makeup of its electorate

Camp efflux inhibition by nsaids: drug repositioning for pdac treatment

In a previous work, we validated the inhibition of MRP4-dependant cAMP extrusion process as a promising therapeutic strategy for Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma (PDAC). In view of the therapeutic challenge associated with PDAC, we set out to search and characterize approved drugs that inhibit cAMP transport with the goal of establishing a repositioning strategy. Based on the results of this screening, we selected the Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) as an interesting pharmacological family to inquire for rational drug repositioning. NSAIDs have been tested in the past as co-adjuvants in the therapy of various types of cancer, in many cases with positive results. Although their effects that depend on cyclooxygenase-2 inhibition are well described, the effects that are independent of this inhibition are far for being clear. We hypothesize that MRP4 inhibition could be a missing link in the overall action on tumor progression of these compounds. In this work, we measure the intracellular cAMP response upon treatment with 13 different NSAIDs using a technique developed in our laboratory in which we use HEK-293T cells stably transfected with the EPAC-SH187 sensor. Ibuprofen, acetyilsalicylic acid, Naproxen, Indomethacin, Diclofenac, Dexketoprofen and Ketorolac have shown to increase intracellular cAMP concentrations upon treatment (p<0.01). The concomitant significant reduction of extracellular cAMP upon treatment with these NSAIDs was also measured using a Radio-Binding Protein assay (RBP), which confirmed cAMP transport inhibition as one of the mechanisms that triggers intracellular cAMP increment (p<0.05). On the other hand, Celecoxib, Acetaminophen, Dipyrone, Phenacetin, Meloxicam and Piroxicam failed to increase intracellular cAMP upon treatment. These emerging results, together with an exhaustive literature search will allow us to select our repositioningFil: Cerviño, Ramiro Héctor. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Get PDF
A modular torque measuring instrument capable of performing tapping torque tests (TTT) according to the ASTM D-5619 standard was designed, developed, and validated. With this new instrument, the performance of different lubricants can be evaluated in terms of frictional torque and energy consumption during tapping processes. This instrument can adapt onto any conventional milling machine or CNC machine and operate under various machining operations such as tapping, drilling, and other processes. To validate the design and performance of this new device, three commercially available lubricants were evaluated. From the three tested conditions, the results showed good repeatability, with consistent results throughout the different tests for each lubricant. The impact of such a proposed instrument ranges from academic use to industrial business use

Helicobacter pylori is a spiral Gram-negative bacterium associated with inflammation of the gastric mucosa, peptic ulcer, and gastric adenocarcinoma; it is one of the leading causes of cancer death worldwide. Treatment prescribed to patients with gastric ulcer has failed in many cases mainly due to antibiotic resistance and important side effects such as taste disturbances, vaginal candidiasis, and pseudomembranous colitis. Interest in botanical medicine is increasing as a viable alternative to the traditional one. Plant leaves of the Asteraceae family are used to treat diarrhea, ulcers and rheumatism. The aim of this study was to evaluate the activity of aqueous and methanolic extracts from plants of the Asteraceae family against H. pylori growth in vitro, using the colorimetric tetrazolium bromide (MTT) reduction assay. We observed that methanolic extracts from plants of the Asteraceae family showed up to 82% H. pylori growth inhibition (MIC at 500 µg/mL).The results of the present study contribute to the body of knowledge of medicinal plants with antimicrobial potential, particularly against H. pylori
