    Lifetime Bipolar Disorder comorbidity and related clinical characteristics in patients with primary Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: a report from the International College of Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum Disorders (ICOCS)

    IntroductionBipolar disorder (BD) and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) are prevalent, comorbid, and disabling conditions, often characterized by early onset and chronic course. When comorbid, OCD and BD can determine a more pernicious course of illness, posing therapeutic challenges for clinicians. Available reports on prevalence and clinical characteristics of comorbidity between BD and OCD showed mixed results, likely depending on the primary diagnosis of analyzed samples.MethodsWe assessed prevalence and clinical characteristics of BD comorbidity in a large international sample of patients with primary OCD (n = 401), through the International College of Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum Disorders (ICOCS) snapshot database, by comparing OCD subjects with vs without BD comorbidity.ResultsAmong primary OCD patients, 6.2% showed comorbidity with BD. OCD patients with vs without BD comorbidity more frequently had a previous hospitalization (p < 0.001) and current augmentation therapies (p < 0.001). They also showed greater severity of OCD (p < 0.001), as measured by the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS).ConclusionThese findings from a large international sample indicate that approximately 1 out of 16 patients with primary OCD may additionally have BD comorbidity along with other specific clinical characteristics, including more frequent previous hospitalizations, more complex therapeutic regimens, and a greater severity of OCD. Prospective international studies are needed to confirm our findings.Peer reviewe

Some opportunities for, and limitations on, monitoring urban growth using remote sensing data are shown in the present contribution; moreover examples of environmental impacts of urban growth, as monitored with remote sensing, are provided in order to define future development of dumps and quarries and its environmental impacts on Niamey city

    Does acupuncture improve the outcome of in vitro fertilisation? Guidance for future trials

    Abstract Introduction The comprehensive review was to appraise the current evidence from both randomized and non-randomized trials by using both Chinese and western databases and to highlight the issues which could guide future trial design. Many infertile couples have chosen acupuncture as an adjunct when they undergo in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) treatment. More than forty trials have emerged since the first clinical research published in 1999 explored the effects of acupuncture on the outcomes of IVF. However, the current evidence makes it difficult for clinical practitioners and patients to make a decision on whether to choose acupuncture as an adjunct when undergoing IVF or ICSI treatment. Methodology A total of thirty-three randomized and 5 non-randomized controlled trials were included in the review. Results Based on this comprehensive review and analysis of all the relevant trials, the authors identify the factors which have contributed to these inconsistencies, and which should be considered in the design of future studies. Discussion/conclusions These items included in the review could provide useful recommendations and guidelines, which will in turn promote better trial design and improve the evidence base for the use of acupuncture for IVF

    Spitzer Space Telescope Measurements of Dust Reverberation Lags in the Seyfert 1 Galaxy NGC 6418

    We present results from a fifteen-month campaign of high-cadence (~ 3 days) mid-infrared Spitzer and optical (B and V ) monitoring of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 6418, with the objective of determining the characteristic size of the dusty torus in this active galactic nucleus (AGN). We find that the 3.6 μ\mum and 4.5 μ\mum flux variations lag behind those of the optical continuum by 37.22.2+2.437.2^{+2.4}_{-2.2} days and 47.13.1+3.147.1^{+3.1}_{-3.1} days, respectively. We report a cross-correlation time lag between the 4.5 μ\mum and 3.6 μ\mum flux of 13.90.1+0.513.9^{+0.5}_{-0.1} days. The lags indicate that the dust emitting at 3.6 μ\mum and 4.5 μ\mum is located at a distance of approximately 1 light-month (~ 0.03 pc) from the source of the AGN UV-optical continuum. The reverberation radii are consistent with the inferred lower limit to the sublimation radius for pure graphite grains at 1800 K, but smaller by a factor of ~ 2 than the corresponding lower limit for silicate grains; this is similar to what has been found for near-infrared (K-band) lags in other AGN. The 3.6 and 4.5 μ\mum reverberation radii fall above the K-band τL0.5\tau \propto L^{0.5} size-luminosity relationship by factors 2.7\lesssim 2.7 and 3.4\lesssim 3.4, respectively, while the 4.5 μ\mum reverberation radius is only 27% larger than the 3.6 μ\mum radius. This is broadly consistent with clumpy torus models, in which individual optically thick clouds emit strongly over a broad wavelength range.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figure

    Glucose is a key driver for GLUT1-mediated nanoparticles internalization in breast cancer cells

    The mesenchymal state in cancer is usually associated with poor prognosis due to the metastatic predisposition and the hyper-activated metabolism. Exploiting cell glucose metabolism we propose a new method to detect mesenchymal-like cancer cells. We demonstrate that the uptake of glucose-coated magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) by mesenchymal-like cells remains constant when the glucose in the medium is increased from low (5.5 mM) to high (25 mM) concentration, while the MNPs uptake by epithelial-like cells is significantly reduced. These findings reveal that the glucose-shell of MNPs plays a major role in recognition of cells with high-metabolic activity. By selectively blocking the glucose transporter 1 channels we showed its involvement in the internalization process of glucose-coated MNPs. Our results suggest that glucose-coated MNPs can be used for metabolic-based assays aimed at detecting cancer cells and that can be used to selectively target cancer cells taking advantage, for instance, of the magnetic-thermotherapy

    AbstractThe present paper is about a preliminary study of the georesources of Niamey (Niger). The main goals are the qualitative and quantitative characterization of surface water, groundwater, and aggregates. There was a census of the wells and quarries, an in situ characterization and a consequent sampling survey. Laboratory analyses were performed to evaluate chemical and physical features of water and aggregates. Thanks to a dedicated Geodatabase, schematic forms reporting the available data of wells and quarries were produced. The study evidenced the actual condition of surface water, groundwater and active and closed quarries, also highlighting local phenomena of pollution

    Landscape Genetics Reveals Focal Transmission of a Human Macroparasite

    Macroparasite infections (e.g., helminths) remain a major human health concern. However, assessing transmission dynamics is problematic because the direct observation of macroparasite dispersal among hosts is not possible. We used a novel landscape genetics approach to examine transmission of the human roundworm Ascaris lumbricoides in a small human population in Jiri, Nepal. Unexpectedly, we found significant genetic structuring of parasites, indicating the presence of multiple transmission foci within a small sampling area (∼14 km2). We analyzed several epidemiological variables, and found that transmission is spatially autocorrelated around households and that transmission foci are stable over time despite extensive human movement. These results would not have been obtainable via a traditional epidemiological study based on worm counts alone. Our data refute the assumption that a single host population corresponds to a single parasite transmission unit, an assumption implicit in many classic models of macroparasite transmission. Newer models have shown that the metapopulation-like pattern observed in our data can adversely affect targeted control strategies aimed at community-wide impacts. Furthermore, the observed metapopulation structure and local mating patterns generate an excess of homozygotes that can accelerate the spread of recessive traits such as drug resistance. Our study illustrates how molecular analyses complement traditional epidemiological information in providing a better understanding of parasite transmission. Similar landscape genetic approaches in other macroparasite systems will be warranted if an accurate depiction of the transmission process is to be used to inform effective control strategies
