Could emotional intelligence ability predict salary? A cross-sectional study in a multioccupational sample
The study of emotional intelligence (EI) in work environments is a trending topic. However,
few studies have examined the relationship between EI and salary. Therefore, the presented research
aims to analyze the influence of EI on salary using a multioccupational sample. The participants
were 785 subjects aged between 18 and 58 years (M = 39.41; SD = 10.95). EI ability was measured
using the Mobile Emotional Intelligence Test (MEIT), while the salary was collected together with
other sociodemographic variables in a questionnaire created ad hoc. After controlling for the age,
gender, social class, educational level, and work experience variables, the results of correlation and
regression analysis showed that participants with higher EI and emotional-repair capacity generally
have higher salary. These findings provide preliminary evidence that EI is a relevant variable in
achieving career success. The ability to channel and manage emotions could help employees develop
stronger interpersonal relationships, leading to higher positions and greater financial compensation
A Novel HPLC Method for the Concurrent Analysis and Quantitation of Seven Water-Soluble Vitamins in Biological Fluids (Plasma and Urine): A Validation Study and Application
An HPLC method was developed and validated for the concurrent detection and quantitation of seven water-soluble vitamins (C, B1, B2, B5, B6, B9, B12) in biological matrices (plasma and urine). Separation was achieved at 30°C on a reversed-phase C18-A column using combined isocratic and linear gradient elution with a mobile phase consisting of 0.01% TFA aqueous and 100% methanol. Total run time was 35 minutes. Detection was performed with diode array set at 280 nm. Each vitamin was quantitatively determined at its maximum wavelength. Spectral comparison was used for peak identification in real samples (24 plasma and urine samples from abstinent alcohol-dependent males). Interday and intraday precision were <4% and <7%, respectively, for all vitamins. Recovery percentages ranged from 93% to 100%
Author as Character and Narrator: Deconstructing Personal Narratives from the r/AmITheAsshole Reddit Community
In the r/AmITheAsshole subreddit, people anonymously share first person
narratives that contain some moral dilemma or conflict and ask the community to
judge who is at fault (i.e., who is "the asshole"). In general, first person
narratives are a unique storytelling domain where the author is the narrator
(the person telling the story) but can also be a character (the person living
the story) and, thus, the author has two distinct voices presented in the
story. In this study, we identify linguistic and narrative features associated
with the author as the character or as a narrator. We use these features to
answer the following questions: (1) what makes an asshole character and (2)
what makes an asshole narrator? We extract both Author-as-Character features
(e.g., demographics, narrative event chain, and emotional arc) and
Author-as-Narrator features (i.e., the style and emotion of the story as a
whole) in order to identify which aspects of the narrative are correlated with
the final moral judgment. Our work shows that "assholes" as Characters frame
themselves as lacking agency with a more positive personal arc, while
"assholes" as Narrators will tell emotional and opinionated stories.Comment: Accepted to the 17th International AAAI Conference on Web and Social

Predicting Radiated Emissions from an Electrical Drive System
A Measurement-Based SPICE Model is Proposed to Predict Radiated Emissions from an Electrical Drive System over a Frequency Range from 20-300 MHz. the Model Combines a Model for the Radiated Emissions from the Cabling and Housings with a Model for Coupling Inside the Electrical Motor. the Electromagnetic Properties of the Cabling and Housings Were Captured with Measured S-Parameters. the Coupling Mechanisms Inside the Electrical Machine Were Represented using a Circuit- Element based Model. the Intent is to Provide Insight into How Coupling Mechanisms and Placement of Structures in the Motor Affect Radiated Emissions from the Drive System, and to Give the Designer an Opportunity to Evaluate the Impact of Changes to the Motor Design. the Model Was Able to Predict Radiated Emissions within Several Decibels of the Measurement over the Frequency Range of Interest, to Provide Insight into Strategies for Fixing Emissions Issues, and to Provide Estimates for the Reduction in Emissions that Could Be Expected from Each Fix
Exploring the Relationships Between Altered Body Perception, Limb Position Sense, and Limb Movement Sense in Complex Regional Pain Syndrome
© 2018 The Authors Chronic pain is often accompanied by patient-reported distorted body perception and an altered kinesthesia (referring to the senses of limb position and limb movement), but the association between these deficits is unknown. The objectives of this study were to assess body perception and the senses of limb position and limb movement in complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) and to test whether these variables are related to each other and to pain intensity. Thirteen patients with upper limb CRPS (mean pain intensity, 4.2 ± 2.4 out of 10) and 13 controls were recruited. Body perception was self-reported with a questionnaire, and the senses of limb position (task 1) and of limb movement (task 2) were assessed with a robotic system combined with a 2D virtual reality display. The results showed altered kinesthesia in the patients with CRPS compared with controls (all
NGC 2401: A template of the Norma-Cygnus Arm's young population in the Third Galactic Quadrant
Based on a deep optical CCD (UBV(RI)_C) photometric survey and on the
Two-Micron All-Sky-Survey (2MASS) data we derived the main parameters of the
open cluster NGC 2401. We found this cluster is placed at 6.3 0.5 kpc
(V_O - M_V = 14.0 \pm 0.2) from the Sun and is 25 Myr old, what allows us to
identify NGC 2401 as a member of the young population belonging to the
innermost side of the extension of the Norma-Cygnus spiral--arm in the Third
Galactic Quadrant. A spectroscopic study of the emission star LSS 440 that lies
in the cluster area revealed it is a B0Ve star; however, we could not confirm
it is a cluster member. We also constructed the cluster luminosity function
(LF) down to and the cluster initial mass function (IMF) for all
stars with masses above M \sim 1-2 M_{\sun}. It was found that the slope of
the cluster IMF is . The presence of a probable PMS star
population associated to the cluster is weakly revealed.Comment: 10 paginas, 11 eps figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
Economic Stress at Work: Its Impact over Absenteeism and Innovation
Economic stress has been recognized as a major threat to the well-being and performance of
workers, especially during times of global economic crisis. An interesting and relatively unexplored
research topic concerns the associations between economic stress and employee job outcomes such
as innovative behaviors, indispensable for business survival. The aim of the present study was to
investigate the relationship between economic stress, absenteeism and innovation. We considered
both a direct and a mediation hypothesis and hypothesized that economic stress can have a negative
influence on innovation directly and indirectly through increased absenteeism. A cross-sectional
study was performed during 2018 and 2019 in an Italian food factory. A sample of 578 employees
completed the Stress Questionnaire, the Janssen’s nine-item scale and a single-item regarding absenteeism. All relationships are supported by empirical data. As expected, the results indicated that
economic stress is negatively related to innovation and positively related to absenteeism, which, in
turn, plays a mediating role in the relationship between economic stress and innovative behavior.
Herewith, those employees with higher levels of economic stress show higher levels of absenteeism
contributing at the same time to a decrease in innovative behaviors. These findings show the importance of economic stress in understanding individual work outcomes and highlight the need to
promote adequate intervention programs
Impact of climate change and development scenarios on flow patterns in the Okavango River
This paper lays the foundation for the use of scenario modelling as a tool for integrated water resource management in the Okavango River basin. The Pitman hydrological model is used to assess the impact of various development and climate change scenarios on downstream river flow. The simulated impact on modelled river discharge of increased water use for domestic use, livestock, and informal irrigation (proportional to expected population increase) is very limited. Implementation of all likely potential formal irrigation schemes mentioned in available reports is expected to decrease the annual flow by 2% and the minimum monthly flow by 5%. The maximum possible impact of irrigation on annual average flow is estimated as 8%, with a reduction of minimum monthly flow by 17%. Deforestation of all areas within a 1 km buffer around the rivers is estimated to increase the flow by 6%. However, construction of all potential hydropower reservoirs in the basin may change the monthly mean flow distribution dramatically, although under the assumed operational rules, the impact of the dams is only substantial during wet years. The simulated impacts of climate change are considerable larger that those of the development scenarios (with exception of the high development scenario of hydropower schemes) although the results are sensitive to the choice of GCM and the IPCC SRES greenhouse gas (GHG) emission scenarios. The annual mean water flow predictions for the period 2020-2050 averaged over scenarios from all the four GCMs used in this study are close to the present situation for both the A2 and B2 GHG scenarios. For the 2050-2080 and 2070-2099 periods the all-GCM mean shows a flow decrease of 20% (14%) and 26% (17%) respectively for the A2 (B2) GHG scenarios. However, the uncertainty in the magnitude of simulated future changes remains high. The simulated effect of climate change on minimum monthly flow is proportionally higher
