A geometric look at MHD and the Braginsky dynamo

The final version is available from Taylor & Francis via the DOI in this recordThis paper considers magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) and some of its applications from the perspective of differential geometry, considering the dynamics of an ideal fluid flow and magnetic field on a general three-dimensional manifold, equipped with a metric and an induced volume form. The benefit of this level of abstraction is that it clarifies basic aspects of fluid dynamics such as how certain quantities are transported, how they transform under the action of mappings (for example the flow map between Lagrangian labels and Eulerian positions), how conservation laws arise, and the origin of certain approximations that preserve the mathematical structure of classical mechanics. First, the governing equations for ideal MHD are derived in a general setting by means of an action principle, and making use of Lie derivatives. The way in which these equations transform under a pull back, by the map taking the position of a fluid parcel to a background location, is detailed. This is then used to parameterise Alfv´en waves using concepts of pseudomomentum and pseudofield, in parallel with the development of Generalised Lagrangian Mean theory in hydrodynamics. Finally non-ideal MHD is considered with a sketch of the development of the Braginsky αω-dynamo in a general setting. Expressions for the α-tensor are obtained, including a novel geometric formulation in terms of connection coefficients, and related to formulae found elsewhere in the literature.Leverhulme TrustScience and Technology Facilities Council (STFC

Le contrat unique:Une auberge espagnole

Le débat sur le contrat unique découle le plus souvent du constat d’une dualité du marché du travail, avec d’un côté des salariés qui seraient très protégés, les CDI et tout particulièrement les fonctionnaires, et de l’autre côté les actifs alternant emplois précaires peu protégés et périodes de chômage. Ce contraste traduit des inégalités flagrantes, avec des conséquences sociales et économiques importantes. En réponse à cette dualité, des propositions sont souvent avancées qui consisteraient à créer un « contrat unique » atténuant les écarts de statut et de droits entre emplois précaires (CDD et intérim) et emplois en CDI. Mais ce concept de « contrat unique » est souvent peu défini. C’est même une auberge espagnole si l’on prend en considération les différences importantes de contenu constatées dans les propos des uns ou des autres ! Les trois objectifs déclarés de la proposition de contrat unique sont : (i) de réduire les inégalités de statuts liées à la coexistence de contrats dits précaires (CDD et intérim) et de CDI ; (ii) de réduire la complexité et les incertitudes coûteuses de la judiciarisation des licenciements ; (iii) d’internaliser en partie le coût social des licenciements. Notre analyse montre qu’un contrat unique ne peut pas répondre véritablement à ces objectifs, mieux servis par d’autres voies, et qu’il présenterait des risques juridiques majeurs

A geometric look at momentum flux and stress in fluid mechanics

We develop a geometric formulation of fluid dynamics, valid on arbitrary Riemannian manifolds, that regards the momentum-flux and stress tensors as 1-form valued 2-forms, and their divergence as a covariant exterior derivative. We review the necessary tools of differential geometry and obtain the corresponding coordinate-free form of the equations of motion for a variety of inviscid fluid models -- compressible and incompressible Euler equations, Lagrangian-averaged Euler-$\alpha$ equations, magnetohydrodynamics and shallow-water models -- using a variational derivation which automatically yields a symmetric momentum flux. We also consider dissipative effects and discuss the geometric form of the Navier--Stokes equations for viscous fluids and of the Oldroyd-B model for visco-elastic fluids

Effets de la diffusion des technologies de l’information sur la croissance potentielle et observée

L’étude propose une analyse des effets de l’émergence et de la diffusion des technologies de l’information sur la croissance potentielle et observée de l’output et de la productivité du travail en France, au cours des deux dernières décennies. De façon habituelle, les technologies de l’information regroupent ici le matériel informatique, les logiciels et les matériels de communication. Il en ressort que la diffusion des technologies de l’information élève le rythme de la croissance potentielle (par rapport à une situation très théorique où les technologies de l’information n’existeraient pas) via l’accélération de la productivité induite par l’utilisation de ces biens et services. Cet effet sur la croissance potentielle se décompose en un effet de moyen à long terme correspondant au capital deepening en technologies de l’information et aux gains de productivité multifactorielle que l’utilisation des technologies de l’information entraîne. L’effet transitoire de court à moyen terme est lié à la baisse transitoire du NAIRU (Non-accelerating inflation rate of unemployment) elle-même induite par l’indexation retardée des salaires sur la productivité. Les ordres de grandeur auxquels aboutissent les chiffrages proposés montrent que l’enjeu est considérable pour la composante de moyen à long terme. Concernant l’effet transitoire de court à moyen terme, l’analyse rétrospective de l’évolution des taux de marge des entreprises semble démentir un effet favorable.This study examines the effects that the introduction and diffusion of information technology have had on potential and actual growth of output and labour productivity in France over the last two decades.We show that IT diffusion boosts the potential output growth rate (as compared to a highly theoretical situation in which IT does not exist) via the productivity spurt resulting from the use of IT. This effect on potential output growth may be broken down into two components: i) a medium to long term effect that corresponds to IT capital deepening and to the gains in multifactor productivity associated with IIT use, and ii) a short to medium term transitory effect linked to the temporary fall in the NAIRU ensuing from the lagged indexation of wages to productivity. The results show that the stakes are significant for the medium to long term component. With regard to the short to medium term transitory effect, the backward-looking analysis of the trend in corporate profit margins seems to refute the existence of a positive effect

Product and Labour Market Regulations, Production Prices, Wages and Productivity

This study is an attempt to evaluate the effects of product and labour market regulations on industry productivity through their various impacts on changes in production prices and wages. In a first stage, the estimation of a regression equation on an industry*country panel, with controls for country*industry and country*year fixed effects, show that multi-factor productivity is negatively and significantly influenced by both indicators of industrial prices from same industry and weighted average of industrial prices from other industries, and by indicators of country wages weighted by industry labour shares for low and high skilled workers. In a second stage, an economic policy simulation of the implications these results on the basis of their calibration by the OECD product and labour market anti-competitive regulation indicators suggests that nearly all countries could expect sizeable gains in multifactor productivity from deregulation reforms

They question the presence of Neomelaniconion palpalis (Newstead 1907) and they describe fi ve new species for world fauna: Neomelaniconion albiradius sp. nov., Neomelaniconion belleci sp. nov., Neomelaniconion fontenillei sp. nov., Neomelaniconion nigropterum sp. nov., Neomelaniconion sylvaticum sp. nov. They fi nally propose the creation of Circumluteolus and Sylvaticum groups. Résumé. Les auteurs effectuent une révision du genre Neomelaniconion Newstead à Madagascar.
