La fídula tardomedieval a la Corona d'Aragó : anàlisi iconogràfica d'un problema organològic

Starting with the observation of a broad range of XIV and XV century iconographic representations, from the ancient Crown of Aragon, this article analyses various aspects related to the medieval fiddle. Among the issues discussed are the diverse elements which determined the musical possibilities of the instrument, such as the number and arrangement of the strings, and the structure and characteristics of the bridge. The study concludes with a discussion of the tuning of the fiddle, based on various contemporary European sources, amongst which are the contributions of J. De Moravia, J. Vaillant and J. Tinctoris.Partiendo de la observación de un amplio repertorio de representaciones iconográficas de los siglos XIV y xv procedentes de la antigua Corona de Aragón, el presente articulo anaiiza diversos aspectos relativos a la fídula medieval. Entre los aspectos tratados destacan distintos elementos determinantes de las posibilidades musicales de este instrumento, como el número y disposición de las cuerdas, y la estructura y característics del puente. El estudio se completa con una reflexión entorno a la atinación de la fídula, basada en distintas fc entes europeas contemporáneas entre las que destacan 10s tratados de J. de Moravia, J. Vaillant y J. Tinctoris

En aquest volum de la Revista Catalana de Musicologia es recullen algunes de les comunicacions presentades al Congrés Internacional «La Iconografia Musical a la Mediterrània i el seu Impacte sobre la Cultura Europea al llarg de la Història» (Barcelona, 4-6 d'octubre de 2010). Aquest article fa una ressenya del que va ser aquell congrés: s'enumeren els participants i les temàtiques que hi van ser tractades, i se situen els articles publicats en aquest volum en el context en el qual van ser llegits.This volume of Revista Catalana de Musicologia contains some of the papers presented at the International Conference «Musical Iconography in the Mediterranean and Its Impact on European Culture through History» (Barcelona, 4-6 October 2010). Obliteration study of lambdatic and obelionic region sutures in ruminant, carnivores and hominids

The morphology of Orce cranial fragment VM-0 is contrasted with the frontoparietal region in artiodactyls, and the obelionic region in carnivores and primates including hominids. Sutural development at obelion is compared in those taxa throughout the growth period up to the onset of sutural obliteration, and ontogenetic differences between non-primates and primates lead us to conclude that the configuration in VM-0 more resembles that found in hominids than in artiodactyls or carnivores. Moreover, cranial capacity for VM-0 is estimated at >470cm 3 , comparable to Plio-Pleistocene hominids, but greater than in young equids

El tambor de cuerdas y la música del siglo XVI: nuevas fuentes iconográficas

The present paper deals with a stringed drum depicted in an anonymous Catalan panel from the mid 16th century. The panel, coming from the church of Barruera (Boí valley), disappeared during the Spanish Civil War and we only have a black and white photography kept in the Institut Amatller d’Art Hispànic in Barcelona. Nevertheless, the study of this depiction shows several aspects related to the instrument and its musical use. Some of these aspects allow us to deal with different hypothesis connecting the stringed drum with the performance practice: on the one hand the instrument appears in a courtly renaissance atmosphere, being played at a banquet; on the other hand the instrument appears not only accompanying the one-hand flute (as it can be seen in other depictions) but also making up a consort together with a fiddle.El presente artículo se centra en la representación, hasta ahora desconocida, de un tambor de cuerdas pintado en una tabla anónima catalana de mediados del siglo XVI, procedente de la pequeña iglesia de Barruera (Vall de Boí). Dicha tabla desapareció durante la guerra civil española y solo la conocemos a través de una fotografía en blanco y negro que se conserva en el Instituto Amatller de Arte Hispánico (Barcelona). No obstante, el estudio de la representación clarifica algunos aspectos relativos al uso del instrumento que hasta ahora no se habían podido demostrar: por un lado nos sitúa el tambor de cuerdas en el contexto de un banquete cortesano de ambiente renacentista; por otro lado relaciona el instrumento no solo con su acompañante habitual – la flauta de una sola mano – sino también con la viola de arco
