COLLISIONAL VERSUS COLLISIONLESS MATTER: A ONE-DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS OF GRAVITATIONAL CLUSTERING

We present the results of a series of one-dimensional N-body and hydrodynamical simulations which have been used for testing the different clustering properties of baryonic and dark matter in an expanding background. Initial Gaussian random density perturbations with a power-law spectrum P(k)∝knP(k) \propto k^n are assumed. We analyse the distribution of density fluctuations and thermodynamical quantities for different spectral indices nn and discuss the statistical properties of clustering in the corresponding simulations. At large scales the final distribution of the two components is very similar while at small scales the dark matter presents a lumpiness which is not found in the baryonic matter. The amplitude of density fluctuations in each component depends on the spectral index nn and only for n=−1n=-1 the amplitude of baryonic density fluctuations is larger than that in the dark component. This result is also confirmed by the behaviour of the bias factor, defined as the ratio between the r.m.s of baryonic and dark matter fluctuations at different scales: while for n=1, 3n=1,\ 3 it is always less than unity except at very large scales where it tends to one, for n=−1n=-1 it is above 1.4 at all scales. All simulations show also that there is not an exact correspondence between the positions of largest peaks in dark and baryonic components, as confirmed by a cross-correlation analysis. The final temperatures depend on the initial spectral index: the highest values are obtained for n=−1n=-1 and are in proximity of high density regions.Comment: 7 pages Latex (MN style) + 10 figures in postscript files, uuencoded submitted to MNRA

Greek Inscriptions in Mesopotamia (and Babylonia)

This article provides a short overview on the few Greek inscriptions from Mesopotamia which date to the period between the third century bce and the first century ce. It argues that since the concept of “identity” has certain shortcomings for a historical analysis of an ancient society it might be useful to apply the concepts “commonality,” “connectedness,” and “groupness” for a somehow further and deeper insight. Due to the lack of a larger group of Greek documents in the timeframe mentioned, these concepts are used for some short remarks on the graffiti of the Nebuchelos-Archive from Dura-Europos which dates to the third century ce. The article attempts to show how, in a situation of cultural contact which produced hybrid and ambiguous forms of cultural practices, individuals used different cultural markers and practices of the different societies to demonstrate and publicly display their “commonality” and “connectedness.

    Get PDF
[ENG] : The National Archaeological Park of Machupicchu (Cusco, Peru) is one of the most important archaeological sites in the world. The relevance of this site makes the necessity of the prevention against natural hazards. Peru is affected by earthquakes from the Pacific Trench, but there are important active faults in the Andean Range that could generate destructive earthquakes. In this study we show the preliminary result of the analysis of Earthquake Archaeological Effects (EAEs) and their differentiation from the effects generated by slope movement (creep) in the archaeological site. This type of studies may be useful in the future for the prevention of earthquake effects in the archaeological site

    Get PDF
Colic is the most frequent syndrome of equine digestive system, and impaction is the most common disease among its many etiologies. The small colon can suffer with intraluminal or extraluminal obstructions resulting from many causes. These obstructions present signs such as abdominal pain, poorly altered physiological parameters, dyskinesia and tenesmus. The aim of the present study is to describe a small colon impaction secondary to perirectal abscess in the pelvic musculature. The equine model was assisted at Veterinary University Hospital of Federal University of Pampa (Unipampa) and surgery was the therapy of choice; however, the animal ended up dying during anesthesia application. The ultimate diagnostic was provided by necropsy, which showed one abscess in the pelvic musculature, close to the terminal portion of the rectum. The relevance of the present study lies on the importance of using complementary diagnostic methods, as well as on the presentation of another cause of colic, which is little described in the literature. The present results allowed enhancing the prognostics and treatments applied to horses with this disease.

This research presents reflections and experiences on sociocultural and political phenomenon in the Brazilian public mental health field, articulating the subject and the culture. It studies the bureaucracy considered as an indifference policy through the machine metaphor and the anonymity as referential of the social bond in this speech. It also emphasizes the contemporary bureaucratic characteristics, typical from modern capitalist States, the features of a Brazilian bureaucracy, stablished by the hybridism between the authoritarian way of dealing with the norm and its flexible nuances, besides the roots of a missioneira bureaucracy. It argues the mental health model transformations, focusing its advances and retrocessions, as well as it analyzes the difficulties of rupture with the asylum model. It debates about the Brazilian sanitary policy, emphasizing the mental health, especially the CAPS. Thus, through experiences at a CAPSi, it proposes the place of these institutions as utopic places, of passage, “in-between place”. It points out the necessity to desecrate the bureaucracy, giving attention to the non-bureaucratic parts through two axis: to play as a fundamental device of work at a CAPSi and the production/use of a file as a witness in a public mental health institution, recognizing the importance of a singularized word, handmade, which does not suspend the ability to think and fortifies the public space

Plant Poisoning Containing Hydrocyanic Acid in Cattle in Southern Brazil

    Get PDF
Background: Cyanogenic plants accumulate cyanogenic glycosides and release hydrocyanic acid (HCN). In Brazil, there have been reports of several plants that cause HCN poisoning in animals and lead to a fast death with few clinical signs and lesions on post-mortem examination. Some cultivars of Cynodon spp. grasses cause HCN poisoning in cattle in Brazil. The objectives of this work were to report the occurrence of deaths by HCN poisoning in cattle as diagnosed by the veterinary pathology laboratory, describe the quantity of HCN in some cultivars of Cynodon spp., as well as, to describe one cultivar of genus Cynodonnever reported as poisonous.Materials, Methods & Results: The archives of the Veterinary Pathology Laboratory (LPV) at the ConcĂłrdia Campus of the Instituto Federal Catarinense (IFC) were reviewed, seeking cases with a diagnosis of hydrocyanic acid poisoning in cattle after post mortem examination. The amount of HCN present in some cultivars of the Cynodon genus was quantified due to the high frequency of poisoning cases. From the 1,235 post mortem examinations of cattle 28 (2.27%) were diagnosed with spontaneous hydrocyanic acid poisoning, 17 cases (60.7%) due to ingestion of Prunus sp. or Manihot sp., and 11 cases (39.3%) of Cynodon dactylon ingestion. Most animals were found dead, normally having presented no clinical signs. Macroscopic evaluation mainly showed a severe amount of unchewed and undigested leaves or grass mixed in the ruminal content presenting a bitter almond odor. It was possible to infer that, among cultivars of the Cynodon genus, Florakirk showed the highest levels of HCN compared (P < 0.05) with Star of Puerto Rico, Tifton 68, Tifton 44, and Coast-Cross. Furthermore, Tifton 85 and Jiggs showed undetected levels of HCN. Leaves showed the highest HCN levels when comparing different parts of the plant. Regarding conservation methods, hay showed undetectable levels of HCN.Discussion: To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first description of HCN poisoning in cattle due to ingestion of Cynodon dactylon cultivar Florakirk. This condition is described with a fast-clinical course, with animals found dead with no premonitory clinical signs. Poisoned animals did not develop macroscopic or microscopic specific lesions. Poisoning can be suspected when animals die suddenly, with absence of lesions under necropsy, and large amounts of unchewed and undigested leaves or grass inside their forestomaches. The diagnosis can be established performing the Picrosodic paper test, either in the pasture, or in the ruminal content. Occasionally however, HCN can go undetected when this chemical compound volatilizes between death and necropsy after several hours. Of all the Cynodon cultivars evaluated, Florakirk was the most dangerous for animals. In contrast, Tifton 85 and Jiggs released no HCN. Leaves were the part of the plant presenting the highest concentration of HCN. This is a defense mechanism that the plant develops against the ingestion by animals. This condition can cause great economic losses to farmers with the loss of animals and the need for prevention by using cultivars without HCN or hay, as 2.27% (28) of deaths diagnosed by the Veterinary Pathology Laboratory in the west of Santa Catarina, Brazil, were due to HCN poisoning. Notably, Florakirk cultivar was identified as the most dangerous cultivar tested, with higher levels compared with Tifton 68. The Star of Puerto Rico cultivar showed similar levels of HCN as Tifton 68. Both cultivars are commonly cultivated in many farms in the south of Brazil
