Implementation, Participation and Evaluation of a Voluntary Water Quality Protection Program for Grazingland Owners and Managers
In 1990, California\u27s range livestock industry began working with the state\u27s water quality regulatory agency to develop a voluntary producer participation programme to protect water quality on privately owned grazinglands. In 1995 they implemented a voluntary programme of surface water protection supported by extension education and technical assistance conducted by University of California and USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. Past studies have shown that education programmes are crucial to voluntary pollution control programmes in agriculture (EPA 1990) and that ranchers will change grazing management practices in response to extension education programmes (Richards and George 1996). The objective of this project was to conduct an extension education programme that facilitated water quality planning and implementation of water quality protection practices by range livestock producers
Spectra of globular clusters in the Sombrero galaxy: evidence for spectroscopic metallicity bimodality
We present a large sample of over 200 integrated-light spectra of confirmed
globular clusters (GCs) associated with the Sombrero (M104) galaxy taken with
the DEIMOS instrument on the Keck telescope. A significant fraction of the
spectra have signal-to-noise levels high enough to allow measurements of GC
metallicities using the method of Brodie & Huchra (1990). We find a
distribution of spectroscopic metallicities ranging from -2.2 < [Fe/H] < +0.1
that is bimodal, with peaks at [Fe/H] ~ -1.4 and -0.6. Thus the GC system of
the Sombrero galaxy, like a few other galaxies now studied in detail, reveals a
bimodal spectroscopic metallicity distribution supporting the long-held belief
that colour bimodality reflects two metallicity subpopulations. This further
suggests that the transformation from optical colour to metallicity for old
stellar populations, such as GCs, is not strongly non-linear. We also explore
the radial and magnitude distribution with metallicity for GC subpopulations
but small number statistics prevent any clear trends in these distributions.Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables, MNRAS accepte
WISE/NEOWISE observations of Active Bodies in the Main Belt
We report results based on mid-infrared photometry of 5 active main belt
objects (AMBOs) detected by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE)
spacecraft. Four of these bodies, P/2010 R2 (La Sagra), 133P/Elst-Pizarro,
(596) Scheila, and 176P/LINEAR, showed no signs of activity at the time of the
observations, allowing the WISE detections to place firm constraints on their
diameters and albedos. Geometric albedos were in the range of a few percent,
and on the order of other measured comet nuclei. P/2010 A2 was observed on
April 2-3, 2010, three months after its peak activity. Photometry of the coma
at 12 and 22 {\mu}m combined with ground-based visible-wavelength measurements
provides constraints on the dust particle mass distribution (PMD), dlogn/dlogm,
yielding power-law slope values of {\alpha} = -0.5 +/- 0.1. This PMD is
considerably more shallow than that found for other comets, in particular
inbound particle fluence during the Stardust encounter of comet 81P/Wild 2. It
is similar to the PMD seen for 9P/Tempel 1 in the immediate aftermath of the
Deep Impact experiment. Upper limits for CO2 & CO production are also provided
for each AMBO and compared with revised production numbers for WISE

The Worldvolume Action of Kink Solitons in AdS Spacetime
A formalism is presented for computing the higher-order corrections to the
worldvolume action of co-dimension one solitons. By modifying its potential, an
explicit "kink" solution of a real scalar field in AdS spacetime is found. The
formalism is then applied to explicitly compute the kink worldvolume action to
quadratic order in two expansion parameters--associated with the hypersurface
fluctuation length and the radius of AdS spacetime respectively. Two
alternative methods are given for doing this. The results are expressed in
terms of the trace of the extrinsic curvature and the intrinsic scalar
curvature. In addition to conformal Galileon interactions, we find a
non-Galileon term which is never sub-dominant. This method can be extended to

Non-monotonic variation with salt concentration of the second virial coefficient in protein solutions
The osmotic virial coefficient of globular protein solutions is
calculated as a function of added salt concentration at fixed pH by computer
simulations of the ``primitive model''. The salt and counter-ions as well as a
discrete charge pattern on the protein surface are explicitly incorporated. For
parameters roughly corresponding to lysozyme, we find that first
decreases with added salt concentration up to a threshold concentration, then
increases to a maximum, and then decreases again upon further raising the ionic
strength. Our studies demonstrate that the existence of a discrete charge
pattern on the protein surface profoundly influences the effective interactions
and that non-linear Poisson Boltzmann and Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek
(DLVO) theory fail for large ionic strength. The observed non-monotonicity of
is compared to experiments. Implications for protein crystallization are

Molecular detection (k-ras) of exfoliated tumour cells in the pelvis is a prognostic factor after resection of rectal cancer?
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>After total mesorectal excision (TME) for rectal cancer around 10% of patients develops local recurrences within the pelvis. One reason for recurrence might be spillage of cancer cells during surgery. This pilot study was conducted to investigate the incidence of remnant cancer cells in pelvic lavage after resection of rectal cancer. DNA from cells obtained by lavage, were analysed by denaturing capillary electrophoresis with respect to mutations in hotspots of the <it>k-ras </it>gene, which are frequently mutated in colorectal cancer.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Of the 237 rectal cancer patients analyzed, 19 had positive lavage fluid. There was a significant survival difference (p = 0.006) between patients with <it>k-ras </it>positive and negative lavage fluid.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Patients with <it>k-ras </it>mutated cells in the lavage immediately after surgery have a reduced life expectation. Detection of exfoliated cells in the abdominal cavity may be a useful diagnostic tool to improve the staging and eventually characterize patients who may benefit from aggressive multimodal treatment of rectal cancer.</p
Brief psychosocial education, not core stabilization, reduced incidence of low back pain: results from the Prevention of Low Back Pain in the Military (POLM) cluster randomized trial
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Effective strategies for the primary prevention of low back pain (LBP) remain elusive with few large-scale clinical trials investigating exercise and education approaches. The purpose of this trial was to determine whether core stabilization alone or in combination with psychosocial education prevented incidence of low back pain in comparison to traditional lumbar exercise.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The Prevention of Low Back Pain in the Military study was a cluster randomized clinical study with four intervention arms and a two-year follow-up. Participants were recruited from a military training setting from 2007 to 2008. Soldiers in 20 consecutive companies were considered for eligibility (n = 7,616). Of those, 1,741 were ineligible and 1,550 were eligible but refused participation. For the 4,325 Soldiers enrolled with no previous history of LBP average age was 22.0 years (SD = 4.2) and there were 3,082 males (71.3%). Companies were randomly assigned to receive traditional lumbar exercise, traditional lumbar exercise with psychosocial education, core stabilization exercise, or core stabilization with psychosocial education, The psychosocial education session occurred during one session and the exercise programs were done daily for 5 minutes over 12 weeks. The primary outcome for this trial was incidence of low back pain resulting in the seeking of health care.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>There were no adverse events reported. Evaluable patient analysis (4,147/4,325 provided data) indicated no differences in low back incidence resulting in the seeking of health care between those receiving the traditional exercise and core stabilization exercise programs. However, brief psychosocial education prevented low back pain episodes regardless of the assigned exercise approach, resulting in a 3.3% (95% CI: 1.1 to 5.5%) decrease over two years (numbers needed to treat (NNT) = 30.3, 95% CI = 18.2 to 90.9).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Core stabilization has been advocated as preventative, but offered no such benefit when compared to traditional lumbar exercise in this trial. Instead, a brief psychosocial education program that reduced fear and threat of low back pain decreased incidence of low back pain resulting in the seeking of health care. Measuring intracellular pH in the heart using hyperpolarized carbon dioxide and bicarbonate: a 13C and 31P magnetic resonance spectroscopy study
AIMS: Technological limitations have restricted in vivo assessment of intracellular pH (pH(i)) in the myocardium. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of hyperpolarized [1-(13)C]pyruvate, coupled with (13)C magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), to measure pH(i) in the healthy and diseased heart. METHODS AND RESULTS: Hyperpolarized [1-(13)C]pyruvate was infused into isolated rat hearts before and immediately after ischaemia, and the formation of (13)CO(2) and H(13)CO(3)(-) was monitored using (13)C MRS. The HCO(3)(-)/CO(2) ratio was used in the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation to estimate pH(i). We tested the validity of this approach by comparing (13)C-based pH(i) measurements with (31)P MRS measurements of pH(i). There was good agreement between the pH(i) measured using (13)C and (31)P MRS in control hearts, being 7.12 +/- 0.10 and 7.07 +/- 0.02, respectively. In reperfused hearts, (13)C and (31)P measurements of pH(i) also agreed, although (13)C equilibration limited observation of myocardial recovery from acidosis. In hearts pre-treated with the carbonic anhydrase (CA) inhibitor, 6-ethoxyzolamide, the (13)C measurement underestimated the (31)P-measured pH(i) by 0.80 pH units. Mathematical modelling predicted that the validity of measuring pH(i) from the H(13)CO(3)(-)/(13)CO(2) ratio depended on CA activity, and may give an incorrect measure of pH(i) under conditions in which CA was inhibited, such as in acidosis. Hyperpolarized [1-(13)C]pyruvate was also infused into healthy living rats, where in vivo pH(i) from the H(13)CO(3)(-)/(13)CO(2) ratio was measured to be 7.20 +/- 0.03. CONCLUSION: Metabolically generated (13)CO(2) and H(13)CO(3)(-) can be used as a marker of cardiac pH(i) in vivo, provided that CA activity is at normal levels
