The agrin gene codes for a family of basal lamina proteins that differ in function and distribution
We isolated two cDNAs that encode isoforms of agrin, the basal lamina protein that mediates the motor neuron-induced aggregation of acetylcholine receptors on muscle fibers at the neuromuscular junction. Both proteins are the result of alternative splicing of the product of the agrin gene, but, unlike agrin, they are inactive in standard acetylcholine receptor aggregation assays. They lack one (agrin-related protein 1) or two (agrin-related protein 2) regions in agrin that are required for its activity. Expression studies provide evidence that both proteins are present in the nervous system and muscle and that, in muscle, myofibers and Schwann cells synthesize the agrin-related proteins while the axon terminals of motor neurons are the sole source of agrin
Inhomogeneity of donor doping in SrTiO3 substrates studied by fluorescence-lifetime imaging microscopy
Fluorescence-lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) was applied to investigate
the donor distribution in SrTiO3 single crystals. On the surfaces of Nb- and
La-doped SrTiO3, structures with different fluorescence intensities and
lifetimes were found that could be related to different concentrations of Ti3+.
Furthermore, the inhomogeneous distribution of donors caused a non-uniform
conductivity of the surface, which complicates the production of potential
electronic devices by the deposition of oxide thin films on top of doped single
crystals. Hence, we propose FLIM as a convenient technique (length scale: 1
m) for characterizing the quality of doped oxide surfaces, which could
help to identify appropriate substrate materials
Magnetic Excitations and Continuum of a Field-Induced Quantum Spin Liquid in -RuCl
We report on terahertz spectroscopy of quantum spin dynamics in
-RuCl, a system proximate to the Kitaev honeycomb model, as a
function of temperature and magnetic field. An extended magnetic continuum
develops below the structural phase transition at K. With the onset
of a long-range magnetic order at K, spectral weight is transferred to
a well-defined magnetic excitation at meV, which is
accompanied by a higher-energy band at meV. Both
excitations soften in magnetic field, signaling a quantum phase transition at
T where we find a broad continuum dominating the dynamical response.
Above , the long-range order is suppressed, and on top of the continuum,
various emergent magnetic excitations evolve. These excitations follow clear
selection rules and exhibit distinct field dependencies, characterizing the
dynamical properties of the field-induced quantum spin liquid
Some contributions of MAGIC to the physics ofcosmic rays
Cosmic ray interactions can be investigated indirectly in γ ray astronomy, with the observation of spectral and morphological features of certain classes of sources. MAGIC is a stereoscopic system of two γ ray telescopes, located at La Palma (Canaries), with access to the energy window between 50 GeV and 30 TeV. Sources of high relevance for the study of very high energy hadronic interactions are active galactic nuclei, as blazars and radio galaxies. MAGIC has detectedabout fifty such extragalactic objects; we will present some where theemission is explained with accelerated hadrons in interaction with ambient photons. We will also mention cosmic ray acceleration in galaxy clusters. Other than that, hadron-hadron interactions are supposed to take place in some supernova remnants in interaction with surrounding molecular clouds; we will show some results, in connection with cosmic rays of galactic origin. Finally, about other possible components, wewill mention the measurement of the diffuse electron and positron spectrum. Trustingly, the close connection between particle physics and astrophysics will contribute in future years to many new interesting observations
Cosmic rays measurements around the knee of the primary spectrum
In this contribution I will summarize and discuss some recent results about the study of the knee of the cosmic rays energy spectrum, indicating that this spectral feature is originated by astrophysical processes. I will then discuss the current experimental efforts that are giving further insights. Latest all particle spectrum measurements have shown that, between 1016eV and 1018eV, the spectrum cannot be described by a single slope power law: an hardening around 1016eV and a steepeningaround 1017eV have been observed. This last feature has been attributed, by the KASCADE-Grande experiment, to the heavy primary component, confirming that the energy of the elemental spectra change of slope increase with the mass of the primary particle
apeNEXT: A Multi-Tflops LQCD Computing Project
This paper is a slightly modified and reduced version of the proposal of the {\bf apeNEXT} project, which was submitted to DESY and INFN in spring 2000. .It presents the basic motivations and ideas of a next generation lattice QCD (LQCD) computing project, whose goal is the construction and operation of several large scale Multi-TFlops LQCD engines, providing an integrated peak performance of tens of TFlops, and a sustained (double precision) performance on key LQCD kernels of about 50% of peak speed

High-field high-repetition-rate sources for the coherent THz control of matter
Ultrashort flashes of THz light with low photon energies of a few meV, but strong electric or magnetic field transients have recently been employed to prepare various fascinating nonequilibrium states in matter. Here we present a new class of sources based on superradiant enhancement of radiation from relativistic electron bunches in a compact electron accelerator that we believe will revolutionize experiments in this field. Our prototype source generates high-field THz pulses at unprecedented quasicontinuous-wave repetition rates up to the MHz regime. We demonstrate parameters that exceed state-of-the-art laser-based sources by more than 2 orders of magnitude. The peak fields and the repetition rates are highly scalable and once fully operational this type of sources will routinely provide 1 MV/cm electric fields and 0.3 T magnetic fields at repetition rates of few 100 kHz. We benchmark the unique properties by performing a resonant coherent THz control experiment with few 10 fs resolution
Multiplicity spectrum of muon bundles and primary CR composition in the range 1 – 10000 TeV
Multiplicity spectrum of muon bundles underground, with Eμ ≥ few × 100 GeV, is an effective tool for study of primary Cosmic Ray spectrum and composition in wide range of the primary energies. In this paper we study integral muon number distribution measured at the Baksan Underground Scintillation Telescope (BUST). The analyzed range of the number of muon tracks crossing BUST (1 - 170) approximately corresponds to the primary energy range 1 – 104 TeV. The analysis shows that non-power law primary spectra are preferable below the knee. Such a spectrum can be obtained as superposition of the basic power law primary spectrum and an additional component from nearby supernova remnant in the Galaxy
