Genetic correlations between wood quality traits of Pinus pinaster Ait.
• It is essential to understand how characteristics are related to each other in breeding programmes
to select wood properties, in order to avoid that, in selecting for one trait, we are negatively affecting
another. Moreover, measuring wood properties is time consuming and expensive.
• This study assesses genetic and phenotypic correlations between wood density components and
spiral grain of 46 half-sib families of Pinus pinaster in seventeen-year-old trees.
• Results showed that genetic correlations for all wood density components were higher than corresponding
phenotypic correlations. Furthermore, all wood density components were highly genetically
correlated with ring density, and also closely associated among themselves. Results showed a higher
genetic correlation of ring density with earlywood density (rg = 0.96) than with latewood density
(rg = 0.79). A moderate to high positive genetic correlation was found between spiral grain and
wood density characteristics (0.29–0.61).
• We conclude that ring density (overall wood density) can be improved by increasing either earlywood
density, latewood percent, or both of these traits, and spiral grain can be modify in future

Autonomization chanllenges with (former) foster care youth
Plataforma PAJE – Apoio a Jovens (Ex) Acolhidos came to life as a research/action project following a 15 years long field work and an academic study which turned into a Phd theses where there were analyzed the autonomization challenges for former foster young adults. This association has as target teenagers and young adults and one of the scientific pillars it follows is Bronfenbrenner’s bioecologic model of development. It sees the youngsters in a holistic perspective, having into account all the contexts where they are and were inserted, thus challenging society to collaborate and know how to welcome. In an ecologic and developmental perspective, having into account the specificity of each teenager and in a multidisciplinary approach, PAJE performs in three axes: support and intervention to former-foster youth in despair situations, punctual and continued situations; Training and collaboration with Foster Care Institutions with foster youth and professionals; Multidisciplinary scientific research, Aiming to disseminate and be an active voice in the public policies of this area. Evaluating the downstream problem, the Plataforma PAJE intends to prevent it, developing its work in the foster care institutions, through training actions with foster youth and their caregivers. The dozens of young people who ask for our support, some of them with cognitive impairment and/or fragile social networks, take PAJE’s everyday to also focus on minimizing the helplessness felt by these premature victims of their own families and/or society. As for this, Plataforma PAJE uses an educational non-formal model, directed to autonomization, respecting individuality, based on each life story, supporting, orientating and training youth and adults, promoting a successful emancipation, favorable transitions and social inclusion
Apesar disto, têm vindo a surgir
Pornography in its different manifestations was always one of the most important
aspects of human sexuality. However its usage was always associated with the men since
common sense dictated that women had no sexual interest in pornography.
Even so, recent studies have demonstrated the crescent change in this belief and the
understanding that women could enjoy pornography, dawned. With the advent of the internet,
it has become easier to access this kind of interests and as a consequence the Internet is,
nowadays, one of the most fertile grounds for the exploration of human sexuality.
Is pornography something that only men can enjoy? The objective of the present study
is to “realizar” an exploratory study portraying the usage of online pornography by a sample
of Portuguese women, hoping to shed some light about this subject and its significance for the
women of today
Assessing the potential of RNA-based therapeutics for a group of Lysosomal Storage Diseases with neurological involvement
During the first two decades of the 21st century, remarkable progresses have been achieved in the field of RNA-based therapeutics. From antisense RNA to RNA modification, the therapeutic potential of RNA-based technologies has nothing but increased.
In our lab, we have been addressing the potential of different RNA-based drugs to either correct or ameliorate the sub-cellular phenotype of a number of severe, life-threatening diseases: the so-called Lysosomal Storage Disorders (LSDs). Among them, we are focusing our efforts on those which present with a predominant neurological phenotype, since there are virtually no approved treatments for any of them.
Briefly, two major research lines are being pursued: the first relies on the design of mutation-specific approaches to correct abnormal splicing processes in LSD-related genes, whenever they underlie pathology. The second depends upon selective downregulation of genes involved in the biosynthethic cascades that give origin to the substrates that accumulate in each pathology.
Here we present an overview on our results with both approaches on Sanfilippo syndrome, a sub-group of severe neurodegenerative LSDs.
For the mutation-specific, splicing correction approach, we are using U1snRNA vectors to restore the splicing defect caused by the HGSNAT mutation c.234+1G>A, that leads to Sanfilippo C disease. We started by demonstrating in vitro that a modified U1snRNA vector designed to improve the definition of HGSNAT exon 2 could partially restore its normal splicing process. Now, we are evaluating its therapeutic potential in vivo, in mice expressing the human splicing defect.
For the substrate reduction approach, we are using siRNAs. By acting over a specific biosynthethic cascade, siRNAs promote an overall decrease of the accumulating substrate. So far, we have already tested this approach in patients’ fibroblasts and observed a high inhibition of the target mRNAs and a decrease in storage.
Overall, there are substantial differences between these two approaches but they also face common challenges and show equally promising results.FCT (SFRH/BPD/101965/2014; SFRH/BD/124372/2016)N/
Age trends in genetic parameters of wood density components in 46 half-sibling families of Pinus pinaster
This study contributes to the Pinus pinaster Ait. breeding programme, which is reaching the third generation by
adding information on wood quality of 46 open-pollinated families from a progeny trial located in Leiria, Portugal, that originated
from seed collected in a clonal seed orchard. A total of 552 seventeen-year-old trees were sampled at 2 m height.
Trends were studied from the pith outward in variance components and narrow-sense heritability (h2) of wood density
components and ring-width characteristics as well as genetic correlations between cambial ages. Mean ring density (RD),
minimum density (MND), maximum density (MXD), earlywood density (EWD), latewood density (LWD), earlywood
width, latewood width, ring width, latewood percentage, and heterogeneity index were determined using X-ray densitometry
procedures. RD had higher genetic control (h2 = 0.63), and heritability values of earlywood components (h2
MND = 0.54,
h2
EWD = 0.60) exceeded those of latewood components (h2
MXD = 0.34, h2
LWD = 0.26). Heritabilities increased with ring
number from pith for almost all wood density components, and there were high age–age genetic correlations for wood density
traits (rg > 0.98)

The study intends to investigate the non-renewable energy inputs from fossil fuels, as well as the
emissions resulting from machinery. In addition, warehouse energy inputs are analyzed, mainly
cooling systems of refrigerated chambers where fruits are preserved. This analysis aims to find
opportunities for technological, environmental and best practices improvements. Test scenarios were
analyzed and revealing soil groundcover maintenance is the operation with the largest impact in
the energy consumption of the production process.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
The person within: parents and professionals’ views about the practitioner’s role in a parenting program
Practitioners’ characteristics and actions influence the implementation of evidence-based programs, but little is known about the practitioner’s role in the implementation of parent-based programs. The present qualitative study is the first to explore the perceptions of parents and professionals regarding the practitioners’ characteristics and actions which influence the implementation of a parent program directed at children’s behavior problems. Using thematic analysis, data were examined from eight focus groups comprising 24 parents and 19 practitioners who have participated in the Incredible Years parent group program (IYPP). The analysis identified three groups of practitioners’ characteristics perceived to impact the implementation of the IYPP: inferred interpersonal characteristics (genuine interest; empathy and warmth; positive regard; humbleness); inferred intrapersonal characteristics (objectivity; flexibility; well-being; reflexiveness) and objective characteristics (similar age; being a parent; clinical professional background; professional experience with children and the IYPP). These personal characteristics are perceived as serving to underpin practitioners’ actions, and an integrated framework model is proposed where specific practitioners’ actions are understood in relation to personal characteristics. Inferred characteristics are perceived as determinants in the intervention process while objective characteristics are seen as facilitators of parent engagement in the earliest stages of intervention. Finally, most of the characteristics and actions perceived as relevant in this study are contemplated in the IYPP model; however, the practitioners’ intrapersonal well-being, self-reflexiveness and genuineness emerged as characteristics which may merit further consideration. The results from this study suggest that in the IYPP the person of the practitioner may indeed be worthy of more critical examination.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Tendências na indústria farmacêutica (IF) global: diagnóstico, mercado global e aspetos regulamentares
