    Get PDF
To raise the library\u27s profile within the campus community, it is critical to create a strategic plan and align library goals with those of the university. At George Washington University\u27s Gelman Library, the instruction librarians gained internal and external support to hire two new instruction librarians to better support collaboration with the new university writing program. The library then used assessment data to successfully advocate for an additional two positions

Response of Oat to Chloride Fertilization

    Get PDF
Several studies conducted in South Dakota have shown significant yield increases in wheat and barley due to chloride (Cl) fertilization. The effects of Cl on oat were evaluated in the greenhouse and two field experiments. Five cultivars and 3 KC1 fertilizer levels (0, 58, and 117 Kg ha-1) were tested in a factorial arrangement. In a second experiment, five N fertilizer levels (0, 34, 68, 102, 136 kg ha-1) and 2 KC1 fertilizer levels (0 and 135 kg ha-1) on oat (Benson) were tested in a factorial arrangement. The greenhouse study had 4 levels of Cl (0, 10, 20, and 40 mg 1-1) and two watering schedules (non-restricted and restricted). The objectives were: (a) determine if oat cultivars respond to Cl fertilization, (b) examine the effect of Cl on plant water relations (c) examine the relationship between Cl fertilization and crown rust infection, (d) evaluate the effected df N and Cl fertilization on grain yield and lodging, and (e) evaluate the antagonism between N03- and Cl- uptake. Chloride addition significantly increased oat grain yield at some sites. The addition of 32 kg. Cl ha1- gave near maximum oat grain yield. At the Cl responsive sites

Revised Coordinates and Proper Motions of the Stars in the Luyten Half-Second Catalogue

We present refined coordinates and proper motion data for the high proper motion (HPM) stars in the Luyten Half-Second (LHS) catalogue. The positional uncertainty in the original Luyten catalogue is typically >10" and is often >30". We have used the digital scans of the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey (POSS) I and POSS II plates to derive more accurate positions and proper motions of the objects. Out of the 4470 candidates in the LHS catalogue, 4323 objects were manually re-identified in the POSS I and POSS II scans. A small fraction of the stars were not found due to the lack of finder charts and digitized POSS II scans. The uncertainties in the revised positions are typically ~2", but can be as high as ~8" in a few cases; this is a large improvement over the original data. Cross-correlation with the Tycho-2 and Hipparcos catalogues yielded 819 candidates (with m_R < 12). For these brighter sources, the position and proper motion data have been replaced with the more accurate Tycho/Hipparcos data. In total, we have revised proper motion measurements and coordinates for 4040 stars and revised coordinates for 4330 stars, which are presented here.Comment: 108 pages. Accepted for Publication in ApJ Suppl. Some errors caused by the transcription errors in the original LHS catalogue have been corrected in this resubmission. The most current version of the catalogue is also available online at http://www.stsci.edu/~ksahu/lh

De-Americanizing Viet Nam: The Representation of the “Vietnam War” in Viet Thanh Nguyen’s The Sympathizer

[Abstract] Since the end of the war in Viet Nam in 1975, we, as a society, have been exposed to an American narrative that has manipulated our view of the conflict. We have been led to believe that the Vietnamese conflict was an American tragedy rather than a devastating war with a colonial background and fought on Southeast Asian soil. The purpose of this undergraduate thesis is first, to analyze the succession of events that resulted in the war in Viet Nam and the American participation in the same, and second, to examine how, after their non-defeat, Americans began controlling the story behind the war, releasing literary and cinematographic representations that placed Americans as the rightful victims of the war. In an attempt to redress such manipulation, I will employ Viet Thanh Nguyen’s novel The Sympathizer, published 40 years after the end of the conflict, as an example of a de-Americanized version of the war in Viet Nam, that is, a fictional version that portrays the war as, first and foremost, a Vietnamese conflict and tragedy. The aim of this analysis is to demonstrate how susceptible society is to believe the version of the story publicized by the country with more power and how influential America has been in creating misconceptions about Viet Nam and its war. The communication we present results from a case study done with infant teachers, in the context of the Education Science Master Degree’s Essay, Curricular Development’s specialized area. Through the last decades, due to the changes and social transformations, the conceptions related to pre-school education changed significantly and a permanent need of institutions where children could stay safety and receive the primary cares to their development and education has been started to feel. For those reasons, pre-school education conquered a spot line in the educational environment, which leads to the production of official documents that support and help teachers to plan and develop the pedagogical practice. Therefore, the main subject of our study is to understand how infant teachers evaluates children in pre-school education and if they use the portfolio in order to do that. The main goals of the investigation are: to conceptualize the assessment concept in pre-school education, as well as identify the main evaluative practices used by infant teachers to evaluate the significant learning acquired by children and their development; to understand if infant teachers use portfolios in order to evaluate children in pre-school education; identify the reasons to the use of the portfolio and recognize/identify the contents that are considered relevant by infant teacher in the portfolio. Therefore, our goal is to conceptualize the assessment concept in pre-school education, as well as identify the main evaluative practices used by infant teachers to evaluate the significant learning acquired by children and their development. In order of that, we have developped a qualitative type study, through the realization of semi-directed interviews to infant teachers of four different institutions: 2 from the public network and 2 from the private network of pre-school education. The main conclusions taken from the study is that, nowadays, evaluation is an everyday practice in pre-school education. Through it, infant teachers monitor children evolution and their needs. We also conclude that infant teachers use different evaluation tools. About the portfolio, we can say that infant teachers use more and more this instrument of work and evaluation in their pedagogical practice. However, the great majority of the interviewed showed many doubts about their production/organization way, as well as what are the main contents that this level of education should include. This shows us that it would be important and necessary to have specific specialization about these instruments as a way of working and show children learning

A pilot plant scale furnace was designed and constructed for casting titanium alloy strips. The furnace combines plasma arc skull melting techniques with melt overflow rapid solidification technology. A mathematical model of the melting and casting process was developed. The furnace cast strip of a suitable length and width for use with honeycomb structures. Titanium alloys Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-14Al-21 Nb were successfully cast into strips. The strips were evaluated by optical metallography, microhardness measurements, chemical analysis, and cold rolling

Edible films and coatings based on agrifood residues: A new trend in the food packaging research

    Get PDF
Food packaging trends have been changing in the last years, mainly due to consumer concerns about plastic pollution and agrifood waste. Recent advances in the development of edible films and coatings are discussed. These systems can be much more than packaging, with additional functions such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, and nutritional properties, among others. Challenges in industrial processes and/or in some films’ properties are addressed from the authors’ point of view. The use of agrifood residues in these packaging systems is included as a promising strategy that promotes sustainability and circular economy. The authors consider that more research and actions are needed to achieve the best packaging material for each food product with reduced production costs.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Effects of Temperature on the Toxicity to the Aquatic Biota of Waste Discharges - A Compilation of the Literature

    Get PDF
An extensive compiliation and general evaluation of the literature is presented which describes the temperature interaction with toxicity. Recent literature is summarized and made accessible along with a few generalized relationships such that researchers may design studies in a manner that will increase the utility of their results. A detailed indexing system is employed which makes the information contained in the report accessible by author, toxicant, and text organism. Summary tables of the most pertinent literature are also presented for easy subject retrieval. It was concluded that very little uniformity in experimental design is found between experiments on temperature-toxicity relationships, and a generalized summary of the results presented in th eliterature is essentially impossible because of the inconsistencies in experimental designs. The utilization of standard bioassay procedures is highly recommened, and these procedures should be applied to experimental designs which allow the estimation of parameters related to the theoretical effects of temperature

Peer reviewe
