Revenue Management and the Analytics Explosion: Perspectives from Industry Experts

    Get PDF
On October 2-3, 2007, the third annual Revenue Management and Price Optimization conference was held at the Georgia Institute of Technology. The conference explored how multiple factors, including fragmentation of customer markets, transparency in markets, and globalization have spurred a transformation from intuition-based to analytical-based decision making across many industries. Panelists included representatives from industries spanning airline, hotel, gaming, grocery, jewelry, package delivery, consumer goods, manufacturing, and consulting. This paper summarizes key discussions that emerged from the conference and highlights success stories portrayed in keynote addresses given by James Whitehurst, former chief operating office of Delta Air Lines; Rick Campana, Vice President of Corporate Marketing of the United Parcel Service; and, Chuck Neville, Executive Director of Finance of General Motors Service and Parts Operations

On May 18, 2006, the second annual Revenue Management and Price Optimization conference was held at the Georgia Institute of Technology. The theme of the conference was on how the Internet is changing traditional revenue management and pricing practices. The conference brought together experts and thought leaders from more than 30 companies; spanning airlines, hotels, car rentals, cruise lines, apartment rentals, aircraft manufacturing, retailing, distribution, e-mail marketing, on-line travel, logistics, sports, performing arts, software providers, and others. This paper summarizes the key discussions from this conference and synthesizes experts’ perspectives on near-term opportunities and challenges facing their industries

The Impact of Bus Door Crowding on Operations and Safety

    Get PDF
This study examines how bus design factors influence door crowding and quantifies how door crowding relates to operational performance and passenger safety. Results are based on data collected for 2,807 stops in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Door crowding is affected by multiple bus design factors, including door placement, aisle length, presence of a front seating area, and service type. Increases in door crowding are associated with longer marginal boarding times and an increased number of unsafe boarding and alighting movements that occur when the bus has not come to a complete stop. Results underscore the importance of educating conductors on the dangers associated with door crowding

Splicing variants of the porcine betaine–homocysteine S-methyltransferase gene: Implications for mammalian metabolism

    Get PDF
Betaine–homocysteine S-methyltransferase (BHMT) activity is only detected in the liver of rodents, but in both the liver and kidney cortex of humans and pigs; therefore, the pig was chosen as a model to define the spatial and temporal expression of BHMT during development. During fetal development, a total of ten splice variants of bhmt were expressed at varying levels across a wide range of porcine tissues. Two variants contained an identical ORF that encoded a C-terminal truncated form of BHMT (tBHMT). The bhmt transcripts were expressed at significant levels in the liver and kidney from day 45 of gestation (G45) onward. The transcripts encoding tBHMT represented 5–13% of the total bhmt transcripts in G30 fetus, G45 liver, and adult liver and kidney cortex. The dominant structural feature of wild type BHMT is an (βα) 8 barrel, however, a modeled structure of tBHMT suggests that this protein would assume a horseshoe fold and lack methyltransferase activity. LowBHMT activity was detected in the G30 fetus, and slightly increased levels of activity were observed in the liver from G45 and G90 fetuses. The bhmt promoter contained three key CpG sites, and methylation of these sites was significantly higher in adult lung compared to adult liver. The data reported herein suggest that genomic DNA methylation and variation of the 5′ and 3′ UTRs of bhmt transcripts are key regulators for the level of BHMT transcription and translation

What the heck is Revenue Management

The airline industry changed dramatically in 1978 when it became deregulated. Operations research analysts played a critical role after deregulation by developing algorithms and decision-support systems designed to help airlines to maximize their revenue. More than thirty-five years after deregulation, the airline industry is faced with new challenges. The increased use of the Internet as the major distribution channel and the increased market penetration of low cost carriers have led to an increasing interest in using discrete choice models to model air travel demand as the collection of individual's decisions.Models and Optimization Algorithms for Air Transpor
