    Valoración de los servicios ecosistémicos en fuentes

    La valoración de los servicios ecosistémicos permite visibilizar la importancia de los ecosistemas en el mantenimiento de múltiples beneficios para la sociedad. El trabajo plantea la valoración de servicios ecosistémicos en fuentes, que constituyen ecosistemas dependientes de las aguas subterráneas, además de espacios de una elevada riqueza y singularidad biológica y que forman parte del patrimonio cultural, histórico y social de un territorio. Para la valoración biofísica de los ecosistemas fontinales y sus servicios se ha utilizado el modelo conceptual “en cascada”, mientras que para la selección de las categorías de los servicios ecosistémicos se ha aplicado la metodología CICES versión 5.1. El desarrollo y aplicación de la metodología ha requerido la construcción de un marco inicial de indicadores para los elementos que forman el ecosistema fontinal y los servicios que éstos suministran, permitiendo un enfoque integral de valoración del ecosistema.<br /

    A 48-year-old male smoker with no other history of interest, who is referred for dyspnea. Following complementary tests, the diagnosis of COPD grade D GOLD, non-aggravating emphysema GesEPOC, was made, he has dyspnea grade 2-3 of MRCm with BODE score of 7 and presence of bullas of predominance in the right lung. After optimization medical treatment, removing inhaled corticosteroids, the clinical situation of the patient improves, but after 3 months there is a sudden worsening with the appearance of pneumothorax requiring drainage tube and bullectomy with posterior clinical and functional improvement.Varón de 48 años fumador excesivo, sin otros antecedentes de interés, derivado para estudio de disnea. Tras la realización de pruebas complementarias, se diagnostica de EPOC grado D de la GOLD y fenotipo enfisema no agudizador según GesEPOC, disnea clase 2-3 de la mMRC con una puntuación BODE de 7 y con presencia de bullas de predominio en pulmón derecho. Tras optimización del tratamiento médico broncodilatador con retirada de corticoides inhalados, inicialmente la situación clínica del paciente mejora, pero 3 meses después presenta empeoramiento paulatino motivado por la aparición de neumotórax leve que precisa tubo de drenaje y posterior bullectomía, con mejoría clínica y funcional

    Vibrational and thermal studies of essential oils derived from Cistus ladanifer and Erica arborea shrubs

    Producción CientíficaEssential oils from the two most representative shrub species from the Iberian Peninsula (namely Cistus ladanifer L. and Erica arborea L.) have been characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermoanalytical techniques (TG/DTG and DSC). Vibrational spectra have been compared with those of components of the plants, and with those of oils, gums and resins from other species. The different content in terpenoids of C. ladanifer oil (mainly mono- and sesquiterpenoids) and E. arborea oil (mainly triterpenoids) is reflected in the ATR-FTIR by the position of the bands at around 2873 cm−1, 1730 cm−1 and 1678 cm−1. As regards their thermal behavior, C. ladanifer-derived oil evinced higher thermal stability than that of obtained from E. arborea: the pyrolysis of the former was sensitized at 210°C, whereas for the later it occurred at 143°C.     Fetal and postnatal zinc restriction: Sex differences in metabolic alterations in adult rats

    Objective: Intrauterine and postnatal micronutrient malnutrition may program metabolic diseases in adulthood. We examined whether moderate zinc restriction in male and female rats throughout fetal life, lactation, or postweaning growth induces alterations in liver, adipose tissue, and intermediate metabolism. Methods: Female Wistar rats were fed low-zinc or control zinc diets from pregnancy to offspring weaning. After weaning, male and female offspring were fed either a low-zinc or a control zinc diet. At 74 d of life, oral glucose tolerance tests were performed and serum metabolic profiles were evaluated. Systolic blood pressure and oxidative stress and morphology of liver and retroperitoneal adipose tissue were evaluated in 81 d old offspring. Results: Zinc restriction during prenatal and postnatal life induced an increase in systolic blood pressure, hyperglycemia, hypertriglyceridemia, higher serum glucose levels at 180 min after glucose overload, and greater insulin resistance indexes in male rats. Hepatic histologic studies revealed no morphologic alterations, but an increase in lipid peroxidation and catalase activity were identified in zinc-deficient male rats. Adipose tissue from zinc-deficient male rats had adipocyte hypertrophy, an increase in lipid peroxidation, and a reduction in catalase and glutathione peroxidase activity. Adequate dietary zinc content during postweaning growth reversed basal hyperglycemia, hypertriglyceridemia, insulin resistance indexes, hepatic oxidative stress, and adipocyte hypertrophy. Female rats were less sensitive to the metabolic effects of zinc restriction. Conclusions: This study strengthens the importance of a balanced intake of zinc during growth to ensure adequate lipid and carbohydrate metabolism in adult life.Fil: Mendes Garrido Abregú, Facundo.     Fatigue, emotional distress, and illness uncertainty in patients with metastatic cancer: results from the prospective NEOETIC_SEOM study

    A cancer diagnosis can have a substantial impact on a patient's mental health and quality of life. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of fatigue, emotional distress, and uncertainty and examine the predictive value they have on the quality of life of advanced cancer patients. A prospective, multicenter study was conducted between February 2020 and May 2021 of individuals diagnosed with an advanced, unresectable neoplasm prior to initiating systemic antineoplastic treatment. Participants completed questionnaires to quantify fatigue, emotional distress, disease uncertainty, and quality of life. A linear regression analysis was performed to study the predictive QoL variables. The study population comprised 508 patients, 53.7% of whom were male and had a mean age of 54.9 years. The most common cancers were digestive (40.6%), bronchopulmonary (29.1%), and breast (8.5%); the most frequent histology was adenocarcinoma (63%); and most were stage IV (79.7%). More than half (55.7%) suffered fatigue, and 47.7% exhibited emotional distress; both were more prevalent among women. Fatigue, emotional distress, and disease uncertainty all correlate with diminished quality of life. Similarly, ECOG performance status and the demographic variables of age, sex, and comorbidities impacted quality of life. This patient sample displayed a high prevalence of fatigue and emotional distress, together with illness uncertainty, which are clearly linked to waning quality of life. To decrease the experience of fatigue and improve mental health treatment in cancer patients, interventions based on a biopsychosocial model must be intensified

    Physico-Chemical Influence of Surface Water Contaminated by Acid Mine Drainage on the Populations of Diatoms in Dams (Iberian Pyrite Belt, SW Spain)

    Twenty-three water dams located in the Iberian Pyrite Belt were studied during March 2012 (early spring) in order to carry out an environmental assessment based on diatom communities and to define the relationships between these biological communities and the physico-chemical characteristics of the dam surface water. This is the first time that a diatom inventory has been done for dams a ected by acid mine drainage (AMD) in the Spanish part of the Iberian Pyrite Belt (IPB). It was found that the pH was the main factor influencing the behaviour of the diatom communities. Then, using a dbRDA approach it was possible to organize the aggrupation of diatoms into four groups in response to the physico-chemical conditions of the ecosystem, especially pH: (1) Maris, Aac, Gos, Cmora (pH 2–3); (2) Andc, San, And, Dpin (pH 3–4.5); (3) Gran, Pleon, Oliv, Lagu, Chan, SilI, SilII, Joya, Gar, Agrio, Camp, Corum (pH 4.5–6); (4) Herr, Diq I, Diq II (pH 6–7). The obtained results confirmed the response of benthic diatom communities to changes in the physico-chemical characteristics of surface water, and helped to understand the role of diatoms as indicators of the degree of AMD contamination in those 23 dams.     Odiel River (SW Spain), a Singular Scenario Affected by Acid Mine Drainage (AMD): Graphical and Statistical Models to Assess Diatoms and Water Hydrogeochemistry Interactions

    The Odiel River (SW Spain) is one of the most cited rivers in the scientific literature due to its high pollution degree, generated by more than 80 sulphide mines’ (mostly unrestored) contamination in the Iberian Pyritic Belt (IPB), that have been exploited for more than 5000 years. Along the river and its tributaries, the physico-chemical parameters and diatoms, from 15 sampling points, were analyzed in the laboratory. Physico-chemical parameters, water chemical analysis, together with richness and Shannon–Wiener indexes were integrated in a matrix. An initial graphical treatment allowed the definition and proposal of a functioning system model, as well as the establishment of cause–effect relationships between pollution and its effects on biota. Then, the proposed model was statistically validated by factor analysis. For acidic pH waters, high values of Eh, TDS, sulphate, ∑REE and ∑Ficklin were found, while diatomologic indicators took low values. Thus, factor analysis was a very effective tool for graphical treatment validation as well as for pollution–biota interaction models’ formulation, governed by two factors: AMD processes and water balance suffered by the studied river.     Validez de los criterios DSM-IV según respuesta de los padres en el diagnóstico del trastorno por déficit de atención con hiperactividad.

    Introducción. Objetivos: Estudiar la validez para el diagnóstico del trastorno por déficit de atención con hiperactividad (TDAH), de cada uno de los ítems DSM-IV y buscar un modelo reducido de ítems que ayude a detectar casos de niños con TDAH. Sujetos y método. Se utilizan los datos de un estudio epidemiológico sobre TDAH con una muestra de 1095 casos. El 6.6% son TDAH. Casos de TDAH definidos según ADHD RS-IV y criterios clínicos DSM-IV. Controles definidos por exclusión. Resultados. El modelo de regresión logística que mejor predice el fenotipo inatento está compuesto por los ítems del ADHD RS-IV (versión padres) 1, 3, 9, 15 y 17 (Se: 96.7%, Es: 81.5%); el fenotipo hiperactivo/impulsivo por los ítems 2, 4, 10, 12, 14 y 16 (Se: 96.6%, Es: 81%) y el fenotipo combinado por los ítems 9, 10, 12, 14 y 15 (Se: 100 %, Es: 82.6%). Existe una reducción del 66% de los ítems en el fenotipo combinado. Conclusiones. Es posible reducir la lista de síntomas de TDAH con unos niveles de validez adecuados y determinados ítems parecen tener mayor capacidad para determinar decisiones diagnóstica
