    Evaluation and comparison of eight popular Lidar and Visual SLAM algorithms

    In this paper, we evaluate eight popular and open-source 3D Lidar and visual SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) algorithms, namely LOAM, Lego LOAM, LIO SAM, HDL Graph, ORB SLAM3, Basalt VIO, and SVO2. We have devised experiments both indoor and outdoor to investigate the effect of the following items: i) effect of mounting positions of the sensors, ii) effect of terrain type and vibration, iii) effect of motion (variation in linear and angular speed). We compare their performance in terms of relative and absolute pose error. We also provide comparison on their required computational resources. We thoroughly analyse and discuss the results and identify the best performing system for the environment cases with our multi-camera and multi-Lidar indoor and outdoor datasets. We hope our findings help one to choose a sensor and the corresponding SLAM algorithm combination suiting their needs, based on their target environment

    Duotone Surfaces: Division of a Closed Surface into Exactly Two Regions

    In this thesis work, our main motivation is to create computer aided art work which can eventually transform into a sculpting tool. The work was inspired after Taubin’s work on constructing Hamiltonian triangle strips on quadrilateral meshes. We present an algorithm that can divide a closed 2-manifold surface into exactly two regions, bounded from each other by a single continuous curve. We show that this kind of surface division is possible only if the mesh approximation of a given object is a two colorable quadrilateral mesh. For such a quadrilateral mesh, appropriate texturing of the faces of the mesh using a pair of Truchet tiles will give us a Duotone Surface. Catmull-Clark subdivision can convert any given mesh with arbitrary sided polygons into a two colorable quadrilateral mesh. Using such vertex insertion schemes, we modify the mesh and classify the vertices of the new mesh into two sets. By appropriately texturing each face of the mesh such that the color of the vertices of the face match with the colored regions of the corresponding Truchet tile, we can get a continuous curve that splits the surface of the mesh into two regions. Now, coloring the thus obtained two regions with two different colors gives us a Duotone Surface

    Expedient synthesis of an atypical oxazolidinone compound library

    In order to address the current downturn in the drug discovery pipeline, initiatives are being undertaken to synthesise screening libraries of sp3-rich, low molecular weight compounds. As part of the European Lead Factory initiative, the synthesis and derivatisation of a simple hexahydrooxazolo[5,4-c]pyridin-2(1H)-one bicyclic carbamate has been achieved. The synthetic route employed involved a telescoped hetero-Diels-Alder/[2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement/cyclisation sequence to deliver the desired core scaffold containing two points for further diversification. When applied, this synthesis was found to be robust and scalable which allowed the production of a 155 compound library

    Pentamidine Is Not a Permeant but a Nanomolar Inhibitor of the Trypanosoma brucei Aquaglyceroporin-2

    The chemotherapeutic arsenal against human African trypanosomiasis, sleeping sickness, is limited and can cause severe, often fatal, side effects. One of the classic and most widely used drugs is pentamidine, an aromatic diamidine compound introduced in the 1940s. Recently, a genome-wide loss-of-function screen and a subsequently generated trypanosome knockout strain revealed a specific aquaglyceroporin, TbAQP2, to be required for high-affinity uptake of pentamidine. Yet, the underlying mechanism remained unclear. Here, we show that TbAQP2 is not a direct transporter for the di-basic, positively charged pentamidine. Even though one of the two common cation filters of aquaglyceroporins, i.e. the aromatic/arginine selectivity filter, is unconventional in TbAQP2, positively charged compounds are still excluded from passing the channel. We found, instead, that the unique selectivity filter layout renders pentamidine a nanomolar inhibitor of TbAQP2 glycerol permeability. Full, non-covalent inhibition of an aqua(glycero)porin in the nanomolar range has not been achieved before. The remarkable affinity derives from an electrostatic interaction with Asp265 and shielding from water as shown by structure-function evaluation and point mutation of Asp265. Exchange of the preceding Leu264 to arginine abolished pentamidine-binding and parasites expressing this mutant were pentamidine-resistant. Our results indicate that TbAQP2 is a high-affinity receptor for pentamidine. Taken together with localization of TbAQP2 in the flagellar pocket of bloodstream trypanosomes, we propose that pentamidine uptake is by endocytosis
