Theory of Electromagnetic Wave Transmission through Metallic Gratings of Subwavelength Slits
We present FDTD calculations for transmission of light and other
electromagnetic waves through periodic arrays of slits in a metallic slab. The
results show resonant, frequency dependent, transmittance peaks for
subwavelength widths of the slits which can be up to a factor of ten with
respect to those out of resonance. Although our conclusions agree with previous
work by Lezec and Thio as regards both the magnitude of the enhancement and the
lack of contribution of surface plasmon polaritons of the metal surface to this
effect, we derive an interpretation from a theory that deals with emerging
beam- Rayleigh anomalies of the grating, and with Fabry-Perot resonances of the
perforated slab considered as an effective medium.Comment: 12 pages 3 figure
Numerical simulation of an automatic depth controller for an underwater vehicle
In this paper, we analyze two diff erent mathematical strategies for solving
the problem which consists in controlling a depth change manoeuverability
for an specifi c type of submarine. Precisely, we will apply both
controllability theory and the more classical linear quadratic optimal
control theory to a simplifi ed linear model obtained from the general
nonlinear DTNSRDC equations of motion. Finally, numerical results will
be contrasted to show the advantages and handicaps of the proposed
models. It is also important to emphasize that the results presented in
this work are only a fi rst step towards a better understanding of the problem
Spectral Reflectance Reconstruction Using Fuzzy Logic System Training: Color Science Application
[EN] In this work, we address the problem of spectral reflectance recovery from both CIEXYZ and RGB values by means of a machine learning approach within the fuzzy logic framework, which constitutes the first application of fuzzy logic in these tasks. We train a fuzzy logic inference system using the Macbeth ColorChecker DC and we test its performance with a 130 sample target set made out of Artist's paints. As a result, we obtain a fuzzy logic inference system (FIS) that performs quite accurately. We have studied different parameter settings within the training to achieve a meaningful overfitting-free system. We compare the system performance against previous successful methods and we observe that both spectrally and colorimetrically our approach substantially outperforms these classical methods. In addition, from the FIS trained we extract the fuzzy rules that the system has learned, which provide insightful information about how the RGB/XYZ inputs are related to the outputs. That is to say that, once the system is trained, we extract the codified knowledge used to relate inputs and outputs. Thus, we are able to assign a physical and/or conceptual meaning to its performance that allows not only to understand the procedure applied by the system but also to acquire insight that in turn might lead to further improvements. In particular, we find that both trained systems use four reference spectral curves, with some similarities, that are combined in a non-linear way to predict spectral curves for other inputs. Notice that the possibility of being able to understand the method applied in the trained system is an interesting difference with respect to other 'black box' machine learning approaches such as the currently fashionable convolutional neural networks in which the downside is the impossibility to understand their ways of procedure. An Imaging Survey of Early-Type Barred Galaxies
This paper presents the results of a high-resolution imaging survey, using
both ground-based and Hubble Space Telescope images, of a complete sample of
nearby barred S0--Sa galaxies in the field, with a particular emphasis on
identifying and measuring central structures within the bars: secondary bars,
inner disks, nuclear rings and spirals, and off-plane dust. A discussion of the
frequency and statistical properties of the various types of inner structures
has already been published. Here, we present the data for the individual
galaxies and measurements of their bars and inner structures. We set out the
methods we use to find and measure these structures, and how we discriminate
between them. In particular, we discuss some of the deficiencies of ellipse
fitting of the isophotes, which by itself cannot always distinguish between
bars, rings, spirals, and dust, and which can produce erroneous measurements of

Iso-spectral potential and inflationary quantum cosmology
Using the factorization approach of quantum mechanics, we obtain a family of
isospectral scalar potentials for power law inflationary cosmology. The
construction is based on a scattering Wheeler-DeWitt solution. These
iso-spectrals have new features, they give a mechanism to end inflation, as
well as the possibility to have new inflationary epochs. The procedure can be

Potential Use of Near-Infrared Spectroscopy to Predict Fatty Acid Profile of Meat from Different European Autochthonous Pig Breeds
Autochthonous pig breeds provide products of differentiated quality, among which quality control is difficult to perform and insufficient for current market requirements. The present research evaluates the predictive ability of near‐infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, combined with chemometric methods as a rapid and affordable tool to assure traceability and quality control. Thus, NIR technology was assessed for intact and minced muscle Longissimus thoracis et lumborum samples collected from 12 European autochthonous pig breeds for the quantification of lipid content and fatty acid composition. Different tests were performed using different numbers of samples for calibration and validation. The best predictive ability was found using minced presentation and set with 80% of the samples for the calibration and the remaining 20% for the external validation test for the following traits: lipid content and saturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, which attained both the highest determination coefficients (0.89, 0.61, and 0.65, respectively) and the lowest root mean square errors in external validation (0.62, 1.82, and 1.36, respectively). Lower predictive ability was observed for intact muscles. These results could contribute to improve the management of autochthonous breeds and to ensure quality of their products by traditional meat industry chains
Iron bioavailability in two commercial cultivars of wheat: a comparison between wholegrain and white flour and the effects of nicotianamine and 2'-deoxymugineic acid on iron uptake into Caco-2 cells
Iron bioavailability in unleavened white and wholegrain bread made from two commercial wheat varieties was assessed by measuring ferritin production in Caco-2 cells. The breads were subjected to simulated gastrointestinal digestion and the digests applied to the Caco-2 cells. Although Riband grain contained a lower iron concentration than Rialto, iron bioavailability was higher. No iron was taken up by the cells from white bread made from Rialto flour or from wholegrain bread from either variety, but Riband white bread produced a small ferritin response. The results probably relate to differences in phytate content of the breads, although iron in soluble monoferric phytate was demonstrated to be bioavailable in the cell model. Nicotianamine, an iron chelator in plants involved in iron transport, was a more potent enhancer of iron uptake into Caco-2 cells than ascorbic acid or 2'-deoxymugineic acid, another metal chelator present in plants
Discovery of VHE Gamma Radiation from IC443 with the MAGIC Telescope
We report the detection of a new source of very high energy (VHE, E_gamma >=
100GeV) gamma-ray emission located close to the Galactic Plane, MAGIC
J0616+225, which is spatially coincident with SNR IC443. The observations were
carried out with the MAGIC telescope in the periods December 2005 - January
2006 and December 2006 - January 2007. Here we present results from this
source, leading to a VHE gamma-ray signal with a statistical significance of
5.7 sigma in the 2006/7 data and a measured differential gamma-ray flux
consistent with a power law, described as dN_gamma/(dA dt dE) = (1.0 +/-
0.2)*10^(-11)(E/0.4 TeV)^(-3.1 +/- 0.3) cm^(-2)s^(-1)TeV^(-1). We briefly
discuss the observational technique used and the procedure implemented for the
data analysis. The results are put in the perspective of the multiwavelength
emission and the molecular environment found in the region of IC443.Comment: Accepted by ApJ Letter
Constraints on the steady and pulsed very high energy gamma-ray emission from observations of PSR B1951+32/CTB 80 with the MAGIC Telescope
We report on very high energy gamma-observations with the MAGIC Telescope of
the pulsar PSR B1951+32 and its associated nebula, CTB 80. Our data constrain
the cutoff energy of the pulsar to be less than 32 GeV, assuming the pulsed
gamma-ray emission to be exponentially cut off. The upper limit on the flux of
pulsed gamma-ray emission above 75 GeV is 4.3*10^-11 photons cm^-2 sec^-1, and
the upper limit on the flux of steady emission above 140 GeV is 1.5*10^-11
photons cm^-2 sec^-1. We discuss our results in the framework of recent model
