Change in the North Atlantic circulation associated with the mid-Pleistocene transition

The southwestern Iberian margin is highly sensitive to changes in the distribution of North Atlantic currents and to the position of oceanic fronts. In this work, the evolution of oceanographic parameters from 812 to 530 ka (MIS20-MIS14) is studied based on the analysis of planktonic foraminifer assemblages from site IODP-U1385 (37 degrees 34.285' N, 10 degrees 7.562' W; 2585m b.s.l.). By comparing the obtained results with published records from other North Atlantic sites between 41 and 55 degrees N, basin-wide paleoceano-graphic conditions are reconstructed. Variations of assemblages dwelling in different water masses indicate a major change in the general North Atlantic circulation during MIS16, coinciding with the definite establishment of the 100 ky cyclicity associated with the mid-Pleistocene transition. At the surface, this change consisted in the redistribution of water masses, with the subsequent thermal variation, and occurred linked to the northwestward migration of the Arctic Front (AF), and the increase in the North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) formation with respect to previous glacials. During glacials prior to MIS16, the NADW formation was very weak, which drastically slowed down the surface circulation; the AF was at a southerly position and the North Atlantic Current (NAC) diverted southeastwards, developing steep south-north, and east-west, thermal gradients and blocking the arrival of warm water, with associated moisture, to high latitudes. During MIS16, the increase in the meridional overturning circulation, in combination with the northwestward AF shift, allowed the arrival of the NAC to subpolar latitudes, multiplying the moisture availability for ice-sheet growth, which could have worked as a positive feedback to prolong the glacials towards 100 ky cycles.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Surface and bulk band-structure effects on CoSi2/Si(111) ballistic-electron emission experiments

A theoretical model of ballistic-electron-emission microscopy (BEEM) based on linear combination of atomic orbitals Hamiltonians and Keldysh Green’s functions is applied to analyze experimental data obtained for CoSi2/Si(111) contacts. Hot electrons injected from a scanning tunneling microscope tip into the silicide film form a highly focused beam, which even after propagation through films of moderate thickness is narrow enough to allow the observed atomic resolution of interfacial point defects. On (2×1) reconstructed domains a certain fraction of the initial current is injected into localized surface states, leading to the reported contrast in BEEM images, reflecting the topography at the surface. These results confirm that band-structure effects, both in the bulk and at the surface of the metallic overlayer, intricately influence the interface-related information contained in BEEM data. It is found that for a careful analysis of experimental results, a theoretical model going beyond the ballistic hypotesis is required

Hot electron transport in Ballistic Electron Emission Spectroscopy: band structure effects and k-space currents

Using a Green's function approach, we investigate band structure effects in the BEEM current distribution in reciprocal space. In the elastic limit, this formalism provides a 'parameter free' solution to the BEEM problem. At low temperatures, and for thin metallic layers, the elastic approximation is enough to explain the experimental I(V) curves at low voltages. At higher voltages inelastic effects are approximately taken into account by introducing an effective RPA-electron lifetime, much in similarity with LEED theory. For thick films, however, additional damping mechanisms are required to obtain agreement with experiment.Comment: 4 pages, 3 postscript figures, revte

Thermal and mechanical properties of recycled poly(Lactic acid)

Biodegradable polymers have experienced increased attention in recent years because of their wide range of applications in biomedical, packaging and agriculture fields. PLA, poly(lactic acid), is a linear aliphatic biodegradable thermoplastic polyester, with good mechanical properties, thermal stability, processability and low environmental impact, widely used as an alternative to conventional polymers. PLA products can be recycled after use either by remelting and reprocessing the material, or by hydrolysis to basic lactic acid [1]. The object of this communication is the study of the possible variation in physical properties induced by sub sequent reprocessing cycles of PLA

Experimental study and calculation of the electron transfer coefficients on the dissolution behavior of chitosan in organic acids

Chitosan (CH) consists of water-insoluble N-acetylglucosamine and D-glucosamine molecules and has a higher solubility at a pH below six. This studyevaluated the solubility of chitosan in solutions of organic acids for the formation of films. HyperChemTMsoftware was used to perform the quantum analysis. In the experimental trials, the total soluble mass (TSM) and the viscosity of the solutions were measured by capillary viscometer. The chitosan filmswere made by the plate melting method, and the filmcharacteristics were evaluated. A quantum simulation suggested that lactic acid (LA) has a greater stability to react with chitosan. It was then verified experimentally that LA is a better solvent for chitosan due to the increase in its viscosity. The chemical interaction between CH and LA in solution favors the polymerization of films with better physical properties. We thereforeconclude that the uniformity in the formation of films of this polymer depends on the chemical interaction between the CH and the acid and not on the degree of solubility of the polymer

OBJECTIVE: The present study aims to evaluate the performance of the Diabetes Risk Index (DRI), a metabolomic index based on lipoprotein particles and branched chain amino acids, on the incidence of newly developed hypertension in a large community dwelling cohort. METHODS: The DRI was calculated by combining 6 lipoprotein parameters [sizes of very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL), concentrations of large VLDL, small LDL, and large HDL particles], and the concentrations of valine and leucine. DRI scores were estimated in 4169 participants from the PREVEND prospective cohort. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to evaluate the association of DRI scores with incident hypertension. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 8.6 years, 924 new hypertension cases were ascertained. In analyses adjusted for age and sex, there was a significant association between DRI and incident hypertension with a hazard ratio (HR) per 1 SD increase of 1.45 (95% CI 1.36,1.54; p < 0.001). After additional adjustment for traditional risk factors, the HR remained significant (HRadj 1.21, 95% CI 1.10, 1.33, p <0.001). Likewise, subjects in the top quartile of DRI presented with a higher risk of hypertension (HRadj 1.64, 95% CI 1.28, 2.10, p <0.001). Furthermore, the net reclassification improvement assessment improved after the addition of DRI to a traditional risk model (p <0.001), allowing proper reclassification of 34% of the participants. CONCLUSION: Higher DRI scores were associated with an increased risk of incident hypertension. Such association was independent of traditional clinical risk factors for hypertension

Mahalanobis distance, a novel statistical proxy of homeostasis loss is longitudinally associated with risk of type 2 diabetes

Background: The potential role of individual plasma biomarkers in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes (T2D) has been broadly studied, but the impact of biomarkers interaction remains underexplored. Recently, the Mahalanobis distance (MD) of plasma biomarkers has been proposed as a proxy of physiological dysregulation. Here we aimed to investigate whether the MD calculated from circulating biomarkers is prospectively associated with development of T2D. Methods: We calculated the MD of the Principal Components (PCs) integrating the information of 32 circulating biomarkers (comprising inflammation, glycemic, lipid, microbiome and one-carbon metabolism) measured in 6247 participants of the PREVEND study without T2D at baseline. Cox proportional-hazards regression analyses were performed to study the association of MD with T2D development. Findings: After a median follow-up of 7·3 years, 312 subjects developed T2D. The overall MD (mean (SD)) was higher in subjects who developed T2D compared to those who did not: 35·65 (26·67) and 30.75 (27·57), respectively (P = 0·002). The highest hazard ratio (HR) was obtained using the MD calculated from the first 31 PCs (per 1 log-unit increment) (1·72 (95% CI 1·42,2·07), P < 0·001). Such associations remained after the adjustment for age, sex, plasma glucose, parental history of T2D, lipids, blood pressure medication, and BMI (HRadj 1·37 (95% CI 1·11,1·70), P = 0·004). Interpretation: Our results are in line with the premise that MD represents an estimate of homeostasis loss. This study suggests that MD is able to provide information about physiological dysregulation also in the pathogenesis of T2D. Funding: The Dutch Kidney Foundation (Grant E.033)

First record of the alien pest Rhaponticum repens (Compositae) in the Iberian Peninsula.- Rhaponticum repens is reported for the first time for the flora of the Iberian Peninsula. The species is native from Central Asia and has become invasive in Argentina, Canada, Europe and the USA. It was detected for the first time in abandoned fields from Vilablareix, near the city of Girona (Catalonia, Spain) and in the valley of the Vinalopó in Alicante (Valencia, Spain), where it was collected as early as in 1959 but misdentified. Molecular data, based on nrDNA region ITS, suggest that the reported populations may be closely related to plants from the United States. Due to the extremely noxious character of the species and the possible relationship of Spanish plants with the invasive American populations, some kind of monitoring is recommended.Rhaponticum repens (Compositae), una nueva planta alóctona para la Península Ibérica.- Se cita por primera vez la especie Rhaponticum repens para la flora de la Península Ibérica.
