Crecimiento y contenido bioquímico comparativo de larvas en postflexión de sardina de tres zonas del Mediterráneo Occidental (Ebro, bahías de Almaría y Málaga)
Late larval stages of sardine (16-23 mm) were sampled during the 2003 spawning season in their nursery grounds located off the Ebro river mouth, on the Catalan coast, and in two bays of the Alborán Sea coasts, the Bay of Almería and the Bay of Málaga. The daily growth analysis of each sampled population revealed faster growth in the Ebro sardine larvae than in both of the Alboran Sea larval populations. This fact is supported by their greater content with age of DNA, RNA and protein. However, the significantly higher carbohydrate content of the Bay of Almería sardine larvae and a higher Fulton’s index, indicative of energy storage of individuals, in both of the sardine populations sampled in the Bays of Almería and Málaga show evident differences in the daily growth of the Alborán Sea larvae from those originating in the Ebro region. Late larval growth in the Alborán Sea sardine tends to favour an increase in body mass rather than in body length. This study hypothesises that the productivity pulses off the Alboran Sea coasts induced by the north and northwestern wind regimes may be responsible for the growth pulses observed in the otolith microstructure.Estados avanzados de larvas de sardina (de 16 a 23 mm) fueron muestreados durante el invierno de 2003 en zonas de alevinaje situadas en la desembocadura del río Ebro, en la costa catalana, y en las bahías de Almería y de Málaga, en las costas del Mar de Alborán. El análisis del crecimiento diario de cada población larvaria muestreada, evidencia un mayor crecimiento en las larvas procedentes del Ebro respecto a las nacidas en el Mar de Alborán. Esta observación se corrobora con un mayor incremento con la edad de los contenidos en DNA, RNA y proteínas de la población larvaria de sardina del río Ebro. Sin embargo, un contenido significativamente mayor de carbohidratos en la población de Almería, así como un mayor índice de Fulton, indicador de energía almacenada en un individuo, en ambas poblaciones del Mar de Alborán, evidencia una estrategia diferenciada de crecimiento de estas poblaciones larvarias con respecto a las procedentes del río Ebro. En consecuencia, las larvas de sardina del Mar de Alborán muestran una tendencia a crecer más en masa que en longitud, como lo evidencia el crecimiento relativo del peso seco, DNA, RNA y proteínas en relación con su longitud estándar. Trastuzumab and pertuzumab without chemotherapy in early-stage HER2+ breast cancer: a plain language summary of the PHERGain study
This is a summary of a publication about the PHERGain study, which was published in The Lancet Oncology in May 2021. The study includes 376 women with a type of breast cancer called HER2-positive breast cancer that can be removed by surgery. In the study, researchers wanted to learn if participants could be treated with two medicines called trastuzumab and pertuzumab without the need for chemotherapy. To identify HER2-positive tumors with more sensitivity to anti-HER2 therapies, the researchers used a type of imaging called a FDG-PET scan to check how well the treatments were working.Participants took a treatment before surgery, consisting of either chemotherapy (docetaxel and carboplatin) plus trastuzumab and pertuzumab (group A) or trastuzumab and pertuzumab alone (plus hormone therapy if the tumor was hormone receptor-positive; group B). After two cycles of treatment, participants underwent a FDG-PET scan. Participants assigned to group A completed 6 cycles of treatment regardless of 18F-FDG-PET results. Participants in group B continued the same treatment until surgery if their FDG-PET scan showed the treatment was working. While participants who did not show a response started treatment with chemotherapy in addition to trastuzumab and pertuzumab. All participants then had surgery.The results revealed that, of the participants in group B who showed a response using FDG-PET scan, 37.9% achieved a disappearance of all invasive cancer in the breast and axillary lymph nodes. This rate appears to be higher than those reported in previous studies evaluating the same treatment. These participants also had less side effects and improved overall quality of life compared with participants taking chemotherapy plus trastuzumab and pertuzumab.Early monitoring of how well participants respond to treatment by FDG-PET scan seems to identify participants with operable HER2-positive breast cancer who were more likely to benefit from trastuzumab and pertuzumab without the need to have chemotherapy. Endothelial protein kinase MAP4K4 promotes vascular inflammation and atherosclerosis
Signalling pathways that control endothelial cell (EC) permeability, leukocyte adhesion and inflammation are pivotal for atherosclerosis initiation and progression. Here we demonstrate that the Sterile-20-like mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase kinase kinase 4 (MAP4K4), which has been implicated in inflammation, is abundantly expressed in ECs and in atherosclerotic plaques from mice and humans. On the basis of endothelial-specific MAP4K4 gene silencing and gene ablation experiments in Apoe(-/-) mice, we show that MAP4K4 in ECs markedly promotes Western diet-induced aortic macrophage accumulation and atherosclerotic plaque development. Treatment of Apoe(-/-) and Ldlr(-/-) mice with a selective small-molecule MAP4K4 inhibitor also markedly reduces atherosclerotic lesion area. MAP4K4 silencing in cultured ECs attenuates cell surface adhesion molecule expression while reducing nuclear localization and activity of NFkappaB, which is critical for promoting EC activation and atherosclerosis. Taken together, these results reveal that MAP4K4 is a key signalling node that promotes immune cell recruitment in atherosclerosis
Increased Biting Rate of Insecticide-Resistant Culex Mosquitoes and Community Adherence to IRS for Malaria Control in Urban Malabo, Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea.
Sustaining high levels of indoor residual spraying (IRS) coverage (≥85%) for community protection against malaria remains a challenge for IRS campaigns. We examined biting rates and insecticide resistance in Culex species and Anopheles gambiae s.l., and their potential effect on community adherence to IRS. The average IRS coverage in urban Malabo between 2015 and 2017 remained at 80%. Culex biting rate increased 6.0-fold (P < 0.001) between 2014 and 2017, reaching 8.08 bites per person per night, whereas that of An. gambiae s.l. remained steady at around 0.68. Although An. gambiae s.l. was susceptible to carbamates and organophosphates insecticides, Culex spp. were phenotypically resistant to all four main classes of WHO-recommended IRS insecticides. Similarly, the residual activity of the organophosphate insecticide used since 2017, ACTELLIC 300CS, was 8 mo for An. gambiae s.l., but was almost absent against Culex for 2 mo post-spray. A survey conducted in 2018 within urban Malabo indicated that 77.0% of respondents related IRS as means of protection against mosquito bites, but only 3.2% knew that only Anopheles mosquitoes transmit malaria. Therefore, the increasing biting rates of culicines in urban Malabo, and their resistance to all IRS insecticides, is raising concern that a growing number of people may refuse to participate in IRS as result of its perceived failure in controlling mosquitoes. Although this is not yet the case on Bioko Island, communication strategies need refining to sensitize communities about the effectiveness of IRS in controlling malaria vectors in the midst of insecticide resistance in nonmalaria vector mosquitoes
ALMA Observations of Asteroid 3 Juno at 60 Kilometer Resolution
We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) 1.3 mm
continuum images of the asteroid 3 Juno obtained with an angular resolution of
0.042 arcseconds (60 km at 1.97 AU). The data were obtained over a single 4.4
hr interval, which covers 60% of the 7.2 hr rotation period, approximately
centered on local transit. A sequence of ten consecutive images reveals
continuous changes in the asteroid's profile and apparent shape, in good
agreement with the sky projection of the three-dimensional model of the
Database of Asteroid Models from Inversion Techniques. We measure a geometric
mean diameter of 259pm4 km, in good agreement with past estimates from a
variety of techniques and wavelengths. Due to the viewing angle and inclination
of the rotational pole, the southern hemisphere dominates all of the images.
The median peak brightness temperature is 215pm13 K, while the median over the
whole surface is 197pm15 K. With the unprecedented resolution of ALMA, we find
that the brightness temperature varies across the surface with higher values
correlated to the subsolar point and afternoon areas, and lower values beyond
the evening terminator. The dominance of the subsolar point is accentuated in
the final four images, suggesting a reduction in the thermal inertia of the
regolith at the corresponding longitudes, which are possibly correlated to the
location of the putative large impact crater. These results demonstrate ALMA's
potential to resolve thermal emission from the surface of main belt asteroids,
and to measure accurately their position, geometric shape, rotational period,

ALMA Long Baseline Observations of the Strongly Lensed Submillimeter Galaxy HATLAS J090311.6+003906 at z=3.042
We present initial results of very high resolution Atacama Large
Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the =3.042
gravitationally lensed galaxy HATLAS J090311.6+003906 (SDP.81). These
observations were carried out using a very extended configuration as part of
Science Verification for the 2014 ALMA Long Baseline Campaign, with baselines
of up to 15 km. We present continuum imaging at 151, 236 and 290 GHz, at
unprecedented angular resolutions as fine as 23 milliarcseconds (mas),
corresponding to an un-magnified spatial scale of ~180 pc at z=3.042. The ALMA
images clearly show two main gravitational arc components of an Einstein ring,
with emission tracing a radius of ~1.5". We also present imaging of CO(10-9),
CO(8-7), CO(5-4) and H2O line emission. The CO emission, at an angular
resolution of ~170 mas, is found to broadly trace the gravitational arc
structures but with differing morphologies between the CO transitions and
compared to the dust continuum. Our detection of H2O line emission, using only
the shortest baselines, provides the most resolved detection to date of thermal
H2O emission in an extragalactic source. The ALMA continuum and spectral line
fluxes are consistent with previous Plateau de Bure Interferometer and
Submillimeter Array observations despite the impressive increase in angular
resolution. Finally, we detect weak unresolved continuum emission from a
position that is spatially coincident with the center of the lens, with a
spectral index that is consistent with emission from the core of the foreground

Asteroseismology of Solar-type Stars with Kepler I: Data Analysis
We report on the first asteroseismic analysis of solar-type stars observed by
Kepler. Observations of three G-type stars, made at one-minute cadence during
the first 33.5d of science operations, reveal high signal-to-noise solar-like
oscillation spectra in all three stars: About 20 modes of oscillation can
clearly be distinguished in each star. We discuss the appearance of the
oscillation spectra, including the presence of a possible signature of faculae,

First Results from High Angular Resolution ALMA Observations Toward the HL Tau Region
We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations
from the 2014 Long Baseline Campaign in dust continuum and spectral line
emission from the HL Tau region. The continuum images at wavelengths of 2.9,
1.3, and 0.87 mm have unprecedented angular resolutions of 0.075 arcseconds (10
AU) to 0.025 arcseconds (3.5 AU), revealing an astonishing level of detail in
the circumstellar disk surrounding the young solar analogue HL Tau, with a
pattern of bright and dark rings observed at all wavelengths. By fitting
ellipses to the most distinct rings, we measure precise values for the disk
inclination (46.72pm0.05 degrees) and position angle (+138.02pm0.07 degrees).
We obtain a high-fidelity image of the 1.0 mm spectral index (), which
ranges from in the optically-thick central peak and two
brightest rings, increasing to 2.3-3.0 in the dark rings. The dark rings are
not devoid of emission, we estimate a grain emissivity index of 0.8 for the
innermost dark ring and lower for subsequent dark rings, consistent with some
degree of grain growth and evolution. Additional clues that the rings arise
from planet formation include an increase in their central offsets with radius
and the presence of numerous orbital resonances. At a resolution of 35 AU, we
resolve the molecular component of the disk in HCO+ (1-0) which exhibits a
pattern over LSR velocities from 2-12 km/s consistent with Keplerian motion
around a ~1.3 solar mass star, although complicated by absorption at low
blue-shifted velocities. We also serendipitously detect and resolve the nearby
protostars XZ Tau (A/B) and LkHa358 at 2.9 mm.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in the
