    Epigenetic profiling linked to multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C): A multicenter, retrospective study

    BACKGROUND: Most children and adolescents infected with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) remain asymptomatic or develop a mild coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) that usually does not require medical intervention. However, a small proportion of pediatric patients develop a severe clinical condition, multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C). The involvement of epigenetics in the control of the immune response and viral activity prompted us to carry out an epigenomic study to uncover target loci regulated by DNA methylation that could be altered upon the appearance of MIS-C. METHODS: Peripheral blood samples were recruited from 43 confirmed MIS-C patients. 69 non-COVID-19 pediatric samples and 15 COVID-19 pediatric samples without MIS-C were used as controls. The cases in the two groups were mixed and divided into discovery (MIS-C = 29 and non-MIS-C = 56) and validation (MIS-C = 14 and non-MIS-C = 28) cohorts, and balanced for age, gender and ethnic background. We interrogated 850,000 CpG sites of the human genome for DNA methylation variants. FINDINGS: The DNA methylation content of 33 CpG loci was linked with the presence of MIS-C. Of these sites, 18 (54.5%) were located in described genes. The top candidate gene was the immune T-cell mediator ZEB2; and others highly ranked candidates included the regulator of natural killer cell functional competence SH2D1B; VWA8, which contains a domain of the Von Willebrand factor A involved in the pediatric hemostasis disease; and human leukocyte antigen complex member HLA-DRB1; in addition to pro-inflammatory genes such as CUL2 and AIM2. The identified loci were used to construct a DNA methylation profile (EPIMISC) that was associated with MIS-C in both cohorts. The EPIMISC signature was also overrepresented in Kawasaki disease patients, a childhood pathology with a possible viral trigger, that shares many of the clinical features of MIS-C. INTERPRETATION: We have characterized DNA methylation loci that are associated with MIS-C diagnosis. The identified genes are likely contributors to the characteristic exaggerated host inflammatory response observed in these patients. Since then, COVID-19 has spread all across the globe infecting more than half a million people resulting to the passing of nearly 25000 patients. Beside the social pain that this new pandemic is causing, the measures put in force to halt the spreading of the virus are stressing the global economy indicating a domino efect that can last even longer than the probable eradication of COVID-19. Yet, these measures are necessary to prevent health system reach their capacity, an occasion where di cult decisions will need to be made such as prioritization of patients to be treated

    Enigmatic coloration pattern in greater weever Trachinus draco Linnaeus, 1758 and its biological significance

    A total of 58 specimens of Trachinus draco Linnaeus, 1758 were caught in Galician waters (Northwest Spain) and the Gulf of Cádiz (South Spain) between June and November 2020. Twenty-eight of them were males, showed a distinct dark patch located above the pectoral fin and below the lateral line on both sides of the body. Bibliographic and photographic data showed the same coloration pattern over time and throughout their range of distribution. A temporary nuptial coloration in males is proposed for the first time as the cause of this coloration.En prensa0,40

    12C/13C isotopic ratios in red-giant stars of the open cluster NGC 6791

    Carbon isotope ratios, along with carbon and nitrogen abundances, are derived in a sample of 11 red-giant members of one of the most metal-rich clusters in the Milky Way, NGC 6791. The selected red-giants have a mean metallicity and standard deviation of [Fe/H]=+0.39+-0.06 (Cunha et al. 2015). We used high resolution H-band spectra obtained by the SDSS-IV Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE). The advantage of using high-resolution spectra in the H-band is that lines of CO are well represented and their line profiles are sensitive to the variation of 12C/13C. Values of the 12C/13C ratio were obtained from a spectrum synthesis analysis. The derived 12C/13C ratios varied between 6.3 and 10.6 in NGC 6791, in agreement with the final isotopic ratios from thermohaline-induced mixing models. The ratios derived here are combined with those obtained for more metal poor red-giants from the literature to examine the correlation between 12C/13C, mass, metallicity and evolutionary status.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 9 pages, 4 figures, 2 table

    Main applications of cyclodextrins in the food industry as the compounds of choice to form host–guest complexes

    Cyclodextrins (CDs) are cyclic oligomers broadly used in food manufacturing as food additives for different purposes, e.g., to improve sensorial qualities, shelf life, and sequestration of components. In this review, the latest advancements of their applications along with the char-acteristics of the uses of the different CDs (α, β, γ and their derivatives) were reviewed. Their beneficial effects can be achieved by mixing small amounts of CDs with the target material to be stabilized. Essentially, they have the capacity to form stable inclusion complexes with sensitive lipophilic nutrients and constituents of flavor and taste. Their toxicity has been also studied, showing that CDs are innocuous in oral administration. A review of the current legislation was also carried out, showing a general trend towards a wider acceptance of CDs as food additives. Suitable and cost-effective procedures for the manufacture of CDs have progressed, and nowadays it is possible to obtain realistic prices and used them in foods.     The Discovery of Binary White Dwarfs that will Merge within 500 Myr

    We present radial velocity observations of four extremely low-mass (0.2 Msol) white dwarfs. All four stars show peak-to-peak radial velocity variations of 540 - 710 km/s with 1.0 - 5.9 hr periods. The optical photometry rules out main-sequence companions. In addition, no milli-second pulsar companions are detected in radio observations. Thus the invisible companions are most likely white dwarfs. Two of the systems are the shortest period binary white dwarfs yet discovered. Due to the loss of angular momentum through gravitational radiation, three of the systems will merge within 500 Myr. The remaining system will merge within a Hubble time. The mass functions for three of the systems imply companions more massive than 0.46 Msol; thus those are carbon/oxygen core white dwarfs. The unknown inclination angles prohibit a definitive conclusion about the future of these systems. However, the chance of a supernova Ia event is only 1% to 5%. These systems are likely to form single R Coronae Borealis stars, providing evidence for a white dwarf + white dwarf merger mechanism for these unusual objects. One of the systems, SDSS J105353.89+520031.0 has a 70% chance of having a low-mass white dwarf companion. This system will probably form a single helium-enriched subdwarf O star. All four white dwarf systems have unusal mass ratios of < 0.2-0.8 that may also lead to the formation of AM CVn systems.Comment: ApJ, accepted versio

    Development of a Multicriteria Scheme for the Identification of Strategic Areas for SUDS Implementation:A Case Study from Gijón, Spain

    Spain has been pinpointed as one of the European countries at major risk of extreme urban events. Thus, Spanish cities pursue new urban plans to increase their resilience. In this scenario, experiences in the implementation of Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) have increased substantially. Nevertheless, few cities have developed a global urban strategy for SUDS, lacking, in many cases, a method to identify strategic areas to maximize their synergetic benefits. Furthermore, there is still a need for a holistic Multicriteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) framework that considers the four pillars of SUDS design. The city of Gij&oacute;n, NW Spain, has been selected as a case study due to its environmental and climatic stresses. This research presents the methodology developed for this city, which aims to analyze the need for SUDS implementation throughout the identification of strategic areas. With this aim, a combination of Geographic Information System (GIS) software and the MCDA Analytical Hierarchical Process (AHP) were proposed. The results show the potential for SUDS&rsquo; implementation, according to nine criteria related to the SUDS&rsquo; design pillars. We found that the areas where the implementation of SUDS would bring the greatest functional, environmental and social benefits are mainly located in consolidated urban areas

    Síntesis de ferritas de pb, cd y mn vía hidroquímica: incidencia del anión y el flujo de aire

    No se conocen estudios de los efectos de las sales usadas en las síntesis sobre la estequiometría final de las ferritas de tipo MxFeII(1-x)FeIIIO4 vía hidroquímica. Realizar la síntesis de ferritas de Pb, Cd y Mn en relación 15:1 Fe2+/M2+ variando condiciones del flujo de aire y utilizando nitratos de Pb, Cd y Mn y cloruros de Cd y Mn, ha sido el objetivo del trabajo. Se partió de soluciones de nitratos [Pb(NO3)2; Cd(NO3)2.4H2O y Mn(NO3)2.6H2O] y cloruros [CdCl2.2½H2O y MnCl2.4H2O]. Las estequiometrías conseguidas fueron las mismas (Pb0.04Fe2.96O4, Cd0.06Fe2.94O4, Mn0.12Fe2.88O4) no encontrando dependencia del anión de partida. En las ferritas base ion nitrato, se mostró una tendencia de disminución de Fe2+, con el aumento del flujo de aire. Para las de cadmio y manganeso sintetizadas a partir de cloruro, se observó una disminución mayor de Fe2+ que en las obtenidas a partir de nitratos; probablemente debido a la presencia de Cl- que en medio básico pasa a ClO- y éstos dan lugar a la oxidación de Fe2+ a Fe3+ catalizada por los propios iones Fe2+, Fe3+ y Mn2+. Para la ferrita de cadmio se determinaron contenidos de Fe2+ mayores a los encontrados en las ferritas de manganeso; posiblemente no se oxidó todo el Fe2+ por menor concentración de cloruros (0.018M) que en la de manganeso (0.036M)

    First recorded case of leucism in the velvet belly lantern shark Etmopterus spinax (Squaliformes: Etmopteridae)

    Poster presentado en el SIBIC 2022 IX Iberian Congress of IchthyologyThe capture of a female specimen of the velvet belly lantern shark Etmopterus spinax with abnormal skin coloration is reported. The specimen was captured off northern Spain (Bay of Biscay, North-Eastern Atlantic) in 2021 by bottom trawling. The lack of dermal melanophores combined with a normal retinal pigmentation, lead us to considérate the specimen as leucistic. This is the first case of leucism in E. spinax and the second record of colour aberration in the family Etmopteridae
