Exploratory Research for the Improvement of the Teaching of Spanish as a Second Language in a Spanish Public Center†
This paper is part of the R&D project DIPURE (El Discurso Público sobre los Refugiados en España in English Public Discourse on Refugees in Spain) and it is one of the research lines of the research group “Andalusian Circle of Applied Linguistics, HUM-194” on the study of teaching Spanish as a second language (SSL) for immigrants and refugees. Its objective is to establish a profile of Spanish second language (SL) students at the Official School of Languages (OSL). To meet this objective, we carried out an exploratory study based on mixed quantitative–qualitative methods, including, among other methods, participant observation and a Likert-type questionnaire used with students of the OSL in Granada, from level A1 to B2. The data obtained has allowed us to reflect on the migration process in Spain and on the work in the classrooms of a public center with students who study Spanish as a second language—their learning beliefs, needs, and attitudes, as well as didactic preferences. The information obtained is envisaged to improve the teaching practice of Spanish as a host language in a public educational context
The ethnography of the Education, inside and outside of the school
The present article outlines an intellectual path that begins with the anthropologists regarded as pioneers in the study of education, and continues up to today’s ethnography of education. It focuses on certain models of analysis and perspectives that, in my opinion, are still extremely valid theoretical and methodological references in the anthropological study of education. Finally, it concludes by considering that the ethnographic reading formulated from anthropology, because of
its dual nature (auto-reflexive and interdisciplinary), may represent a major contribution for anyone interested in the issue of education.
A politeness view of persuasion en ESL/EFL
ter descriptivo y probabilístico de dicha propuesta.[Abstract] The present article attempts to theorise about the phenomenon of persuasion

Politenes s Theory, in daily conversational exchanges between learners of
English as a secondlforeign language (ESUEFL), and native speakers of this
language whom they are friends with. To this end, a definition of persuasion and
politenes s is first offered, and the interrelation between both concepts is accoun-
ted for and described. According to sorne studies of persuasion and politeness
in the field of pragmatics, and Scollon and Scollon's (1995) typology of social
dyads, a theoretical scheme on the potential enactment of persuasion in
ESUEFL with certain degree of success in the aforementioned conversational
exchanges is put forward. Success here refers to the implementation of this
communicative phenomenon on the part of the learners in keeping with the lin-
guistic, discursive, relational and socio-cultural expectations it entails in the tar-
get language. This paper concludes underscoring the descriptive and probabilis-
tic nature of this theoretical scheme
This paper describes a classroom-based study on the teaching of reflexive
verbs as linguistic elements to express daily routines in Spanish as a foreign language
(SFL) from a pragmatic perspective. This perspective advocates the learning and instruction
of languages oriented to the development of learners ‘pragmatic knowledge’. Pragmatic
knowledge refers to conscious knowledge of the different linguistic resources of a
language, and the linguistic and socio-cultural assumptions informing their use across
communicative contexts. Participants in this study achieved in general more positive
results than learners in other groups of the same level
Linguistic Accuracy in Spanish Adolescent Learners’ EFL Writings
This paper presents an exploratory study of linguistic accuracy in Spanish adolescent students’ writings in English as a foreign language (EFL) (N = 54) by examining learner errors in morphology (grammar), lexis and syntax. The effect of two writing task variables, i.e. length and time constraints, was also considered. Linguistic accuracy in students’ texts was mostly characterised by non-transfer errors in morphology with verbal tense and aspect appearing as the most problematic areas. Transfer errors were also present in students’ texts, but were more frequent in syntax and lexis. Additionally, the percentage of error occurrence in shorter essays was higher than in longer essays, and time constraints did not affect the number of students’ errors. These findings may provide information to Spanish adolescent students of English and their teachers that could be useful to improve the learning and teaching of writing in EFL.Este artículo presenta un estudio exploratorio sobre la precisión lingüística en la escritura de adolescentes españoles en inglés como lengua extranjera (ILE) mediante el examen de sus errores en morfología (gramática), léxico y sintaxis.
