How do markets manage water resources?. An experiment on resource market (de) centralization with endogenous quality.

    Get PDF
We test how a monopoly, a duopoly and a public monopoly manage and allocate water resources. Stock depletion for the public monopoly is fastest. However, it reaches the optimal stock level towards the end of the experimental sessions. The private monopoly and duopoly maintain inefficiently high levels of stock throughout the sessions. The average quality to price ratio offered by the public monopoly is substantially higher than that offered by the private monopoly or duopoly. A clear result from the experiments is that a public monopoly offers the highest (average) quality to price ratio and has the fastest rate of stock depletion compared to a private monopoly or duopoly

Reserves Over the Transitions to Floating and to Inflation Targeting: Lessons From the Developed World

This paper highlights the evolution of official international reserves in developed countries that transited towards Inflation Targeting (IT) and/or floating exchange rates. We find several results that are of interest to policymakers in emerging countries, such as Brazil, Chile and Mexico, which have revamped their monetary and exchange rate arrangements along those lines. First, the adoption of a floating exchange rate and an IT framework are associated with a persistent 10% to 20% reduction in real official reserves held at the Central Bank. Second, this reduction in official reserves corresponds mainly to a reallocation of international liquidity towards the private financial sector, that accommodates part of the effect on the level or composition of the net foreign asset position of the countries. Third, there is a clear change in the correlation between interest rate differentials and the dynamics of official reserves, strongly supporting the Mundell-Fleming result regarding the exogeneity of money supply under floating exchange rates. Fourth, the latter also shows that, once constraints on exchange rate volatility are removed, the stock of reserves can be determined independently by the Central Bank, according to cost-benefit analysis, without hindering the credibility of the combination of a floating regime and inflation targeting.

Conflicts During the Planning of Indian Independence and its Partition in Pour l'amour de l'Inde by Catherine Clément and Indian Summer by Alex von Tunzelmann : an Embodiment Approach to Violence

The end of the Raj and the British Empire had multiple consequences on Indian history, geography and society. While India was joyfully declared an independent nation, its partition caused innumerable violent episodes, the exodus of religious groups, Hindu-Muslim riots and conflicts with its new-born neighbour Pakistan. In such a tumultuous scenario, Gandhi's proclaimed message of ahimsa (non-violence) opposed the will of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, and the, until then, Viceroy Lord Louis Mountbatten who managed British Government policy. Pour l'amour de l'Inde (1993) by Catherine Clément, and Indian Summer. The Secret History of the End of an Empire (2007) by Alex von Tunzelmann both explore the last days of colonized India in detail and with a sharp eye on the events and personalities that shaped this new India. The literary reconstruction of historic events gives a new insight into the decisions which led to Indian independence and division. In both novels, the body plays an important role. With physical and metaphorical references, from the maternal body of India being tainted, to Gandhi's fasts and refusal of medication, the body is charged with political and symbolic meanings.

The Asian and European Banking Systems: The case of Spain in the quest for development and stability

    Get PDF
After a brief review of the literature on the determinants of financial development, the paper reviews the Asian and European financial systems in terms of their size and efficiency. It also compares the steps taken in the two regions in the quest for financial development and stability, which in a few cases are very similar but differ markedly in others. While there has been a clear move towards a more balanced financial structure in both regions, financial liberalization, as well as the strengthening of bank regulation and supervision occurred later in Asia and with a different speed and sequencing. The most striking difference between the two areas is the degree of international - and regional – financial integration, much lower for Asia. Finally, the case of Spain - as a European country with a finance-led convergence process - is analyzed in more detail. Lessons are drawn from the Spanish experience for Asian countries.Financial development, financial liberalization, Spanish financial system

In recent decades, the increasing globalization of society and the economy, the strong development of information technology and communication and demographic, social and cultural changes have been significant changes in the workplace, in organizations and in labor relations. Therefore, Cascio (1995) revealed the new demands posed by professional psychologists Labor Organizations and Human Resources. Study the Master in Psychology of Work, Organizations and Human Resources aimed to prepare students as competent professional in Psychology of Work, Organizations and Human Resources at the basic level. In addition to providing a solid background in both theoretical knowledge and skills related to the Psychology of Work, Organizations and Human Resources. As well as the opportunity to practice some of the skills and roles required for professional practice in the context of the Psychology of Work, Organizations and Human Resources. The ultimate goal of this work is being able to develop the skills of self-reflection on the skills developed during the Masters and oral and written communication of the outcome of my self-reflection. Will revolve around the thematic views on the different subjects of the master, emphasizing concrete evidence of its development. Clearly, it is divided into two parts. On the one hand, a brief presentation of each of the subjects studied highlighting key aspects of them. And on the other, a reflection of the skills acquired during the stay in business and whether it has been possible to apply the knowledge acquired in the master in his practice

Rehabilitation and social behavior: Experiments in prison

    Get PDF
Despite the economic and social significance of crime reduction and criminals’ rehabilitation, research evaluating the effects of incarceration on behavior is surprisingly scarce. We conduct an experiment with 105 prison inmates and complement it with administrative data in order to explore several aspects of their social behavior. We first perform a comprehensive analysis of behavior in three economic games, finding evidence of discrimination against a sample from outside prison. In addition, our regression analysis reveals that inmates generally become less pro-social towards this out-group the longer they remain incarcerated. Finally, we introduce and evaluate a priming intervention that asks inmates to reflect on their time spent in prison. This intervention has a very sizeable and significant impact, increasing pro-sociality towards the out-group. Hence, a simple, low-cost intervention of this sort can have desirable effects in promoting rehabilitation and integration into social and economic life after release

The SGG risk elicitation task:Implementation and results

    Get PDF
We propose a simple task for the elicitation of risk attitudes, initially used in Sabater-Grande and Georgantzís (2002) [SGG], capturing two dimensions of individual decision making: subjects’ average willingness to choose risky projects and their sensitivity towards variations in the return to risk. We report results from a large dataset obtained from the test and discuss regularities and the desirability of its bi-dimensionality when used to explain behaviour in other contexts.Psychometric Tests, Decision-making; Lotteries; Risk aversion.
