Valley-Polarized Quantum Transport Generated by Gauge Fields in Graphene

    Get PDF
We report on the possibility to simultaneously generate in graphene a {\it bulk valley-polarized dissipative transport} and a {\it quantum valley Hall effect} by combining strain-induced gauge fields and real magnetic fields. Such unique phenomenon results from a resonance/anti-resonance effect driven by the superposition/cancellation of superimposed gauge fields which differently affect time reversal symmetry. The onset of a valley-polarized Hall current concomitant to a dissipative valley-polarized current flow in the opposite valley is revealed by a e2/he^2/h Hall conductivity plateau. We employ efficient linear scaling Kubo transport methods combined with a valley projection scheme to access valley-dependent conductivities and show that the results are robust against disorder.Comment: 2D Materials (accepted for publication

Material freedom, citizenship and democracy: the case for Universal Basic Income in post-political societies

Abstract. Under neoliberalism, the political relevance of citizens has been eroded according to a managerial conception of the state and society. As Jacques Rancière mentions, this is a condition of the current “post-political” time. In this context, UBI has appeared as a means to regain the political signification of individual attending to their material necessities and looking forward to avoiding an increasing level of precarity. However, UBI poses some processual and intrinsic problematizations affecting its emancipatory character resulting in exclusionary social, economic and political attitudes. Thus, this article will analyze the role of UBI in recovering the categories of citizen and democracy and the main problems its implementation would face. This research wants to show that, paradoxically, UBI can provide a substantial improvement for those social groups in risk of exclusion such as immigrants, women or precarious workers. Keywords: Universal Basic Income, post-politics, neoliberalism, political rationality, democracy

    Get PDF
Indexación: Scopus. Background: to examine relations between functional movement patterns and weight status in Spanish primary school children and to determine the differences between sexes. Methods: three hundred and thirty-three, 6-13 years old children (164 boys and 169 girls), participated in this study. The main outcome measures were the body mass index (BMI) and the Functional Movement Screen™ (FMS). Children were classified as normal weight (NW), overweight (OV) or obese (OB) according to international cut-offs. Results: total FMS score was negatively correlated with BMI (p < 0.001). FMS score was different between children from NW, OV and OB groups (p = 0.001), lower with the increased BMI (p < 0.001 between all groups). Significant differences (p < 0.05) between NW, OV and OB were found in deep squat, hurdle step, in-line lunge, shoulder mobility, straight leg-raise and push-up tests. As for the sex differences, girls obtained higher scores (p < 0.05) in in-line lunge, shoulder mobility and straight leg-raise, whereas boys did it in push-up (p = 0.044) test. Conclusions: these results confirm that total FMS score significantly and inversely correlates with BMI in a group of 333 school-age children. As for the sex differences, girls outperform boys in movements requiring flexibility and balance, whilst boys outperform girls in tests where muscular strength is required.

Real-space Calculation of Orbital Hall Responses in Disordered Materials

We developed an efficient numerical approach to compute the different components of the orbital Hall responses in disordered materials from the Berry phase theory of magnetization. We propose a theoretical framework based on the Chebyshev expansion of Green's functions and the position operator for systems under arbitrary boundary conditions. The capability of this scheme is illustrated by computing the orbital Hall conductivity for gapped graphene and Haldane model in the presence of nonperturbative disorder effects. This methodology opens the door to realistic simulations of orbital Hall responses in arbitrary complex models of disordered materials

Emerging Spin-Orbit Torques in Low Dimensional Dirac Materials

We report a theoretical description of novel spin-orbit torque components emerging in two-dimensional Dirac materials with broken inversion symmetry. In contrast to usual metallic interfaces where field-like and damping-like torque components are competing, we find that an intrinsic damping-like torque which derives from all Fermi-sea electrons can be simultaneously enhanced along with the field-like component. Additionally, hitherto overlooked torque components unique to Dirac materials, emerge from the coupling between spin and pseudospin degrees of freedom. These torques are found to be resilient to disorder and could enhance the magnetic switching performance of nearby magnets

The Ansotana breed is original from N.W province of Huesca and N. of Zaragoza. The current popula- tion of this endangered breed is 3400 animals. Thirty one qualitative characters were obtained from the head, body, mammals and limbs regions, as well as to faneroptic characters relatives to the coat colour and skin. Eighty-seven animals were controlled, 77 adult females and 10 adult males on 6 dif- ferent flocks. The establishment of a conservation planning passes previously by a characterisation that analyses the departure diversity degree

The Ansotana breed is original from N.W province of Huesca and N. of Zaragoza. The current popula- tion is 3.400 animals, which are entered in the genealogical register. Seventeen zoometrical measure- ments were obtained from 77 ewes and 10 rams from 6 different flocks. The results show that this breed has brevilineous proportions and tends to dolicocefalous, especially females, with predomi- nance of short limbs respect to the height. Overall, females and males show a medium level of homo- geneity in the majority of morphometric variables. The degree of harmony is medium in ewes and low in the rams, suggesting that all selection criteria should be combined in the same morphostructural model

    Get PDF

In this context, investment in new technologies is a strategic imperative for retailers striving to remain relevant and profitable. Using Kahn's Retail Success Matrix as the conceptual framework, the aim of the study is to propose a classification of emerging technologies based on their potential for sustaining retailers' competitive strategies. Design/methodology/approach: Following an initial qualitative study based on in-depth interviews and focus groups with 20 retail managers, the authors collected survey data from a sample of 168 retail and technology professionals. To achieve the research objectives, content, descriptive and multiple correspondence factor analyses were carried out. Findings: The data analyses result on a map that plots the technological solutions that retail experts identify as enablers of four key competitive strategies: product superiority, enhanced customer experience, frictionless shopping experience and operational excellence. Practical implications: This research work provides valuable insight into how retail companies can capitalise on technology to create or reinforce their competitive positioning. The framework acts as a guide for retail companies to assess their technology priorities. Originality/value: This exploratory empirical study is the result of a collaboration between academic researchers and retail professionals. Thus, it addresses challenges experienced by key stakeholders. The encompassing classification enables a better understanding of the impact of technology on retailers' competitive positioning. This work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (Funding Agency #1) under Grant PID2020-113561RB-I00.
