    Stratospheric connection to the abrupt end of the 2016/2017 iberian drought

    Southwestern Europe experienced extraordinary rainy and windy conditions in March 2018, leading to the end of the most severe drought since 1970 at continental scale. This anomalous weather was linked to a persistent negative North Atlantic Oscillation pattern. Two weeks earlier a sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) took place, preceded by the strongest planetary wave activity on record. In this study, we explore the connection between the SSW and the weather shift by employing a weather regime approach and flow analogues. The timing of the downward propagation of the stratospheric anomalies, the transition to and persistence of the negative North Atlantic Oscillation weather regime, and the sudden precipitation increase are all consistent with the typical tropospheric state after SSWs. Our results evidence a significant role of the 2018 SSW in the record-breaking precipitation event

    Predicción de las características de la canal en ovejas Pelibuey de desecho por medio de ultrasonido

    The objective of present study was to predict the carcass characteristics of 28 discarded Pelibuey ewes (41.01 ± 8.43 kg) using ultrasonography. The ultrasonic measurements of fat thickness (FT), area, (LDA), depth (DLD) and width (WLD) of the Longissimus dorsi, between the 12th and 13th thoracic vertebra and between the 3rd and 4th lumbar vertebra, were performed 24 h before slaughter. At the slaughter, hot carcass, internal organs and internal fat were weighed. The carcasses were divided in two half, refrigerated (1 °C; 24 h) and the chilled carcass were weighed. Then were dissected and weighed in the main tissues. With the data it was calculated the correlation coefficients between the variables and their relationships were estimated using regression models. It was observed that the ultrasonic measurements of thoracic and lumbar backfat thickness had a positive r2 that ranged from 0.51 to 0.66 (P<0.001) for prediction of the carcass weights; and an r2 from 0.44 to 0.57 (P<0.001) to predict the carcass muscle quantity. It is possible to use the measurements of ultrasound as a tool for the evaluation of carcass characteristics in discarded Pelibuey ewes and it is possible to predict the carcass weights and edible tissues.El objetivo fue predecir mediante ultrasonografía las características de la canal de 28 ovejas Pelibuey (41.01 ± 8.43 kg) de desecho alimentadas en sistema intensivo, clínicamente sanas, no gestantes y no lactantes. Las mediciones ultrasónicas de espesor de grasa dorsal (EGD), área, (ALD), profundidad (PLD) y ancho (ALD) del músculo Longissimus dorsi, entre la 12.a y 13.a vertebra torácica y entre la 3.a y 4.a vértebra lumbar, se realizaron 24 h antes del sacrificio. Al sacrificio se pesó la canal caliente, así como los órganos internos y la grasa interna. Las canales se dividieron a la mitad, se refrigeraron (1°C; 24 h) y se pesaron en canal frío. Luego fueron diseccionadas y pesadas en sus principales componentes. Con los datos se calcularon los coeficientes de correlación entre variables y las relaciones se estimaron mediante modelos de regresión. Se observó que las mediciones ultrasónicas de grasa dorsal, torácica y lumbar tuvieron un r2 positiva de entre 0.51 y 0.66 (P<0.001) en la predicción de los pesos de la canal; y un r2 de entre 0.44 a 0.57 (P<0.001) para predecir el tejido muscular en la canal. Es posible utilizar las mediciones de ultrasonido como una herramienta para la evaluación de características de la canal de ovejas Pelibuey de desecho, y es posible predecir el peso de la canal y los tejidos comestibles

    Comportamiento epidemiológico de los factores de riesgo asociados a enfermedades crónicas no transmisibles en estudiantes universitarios

    Describir el comportamiento epidemiológico de los factores de riesgo relacionados a enfermedades crónicas no transmisibles asociados a hipertrigliceridemia presentes en los estudiantes del primer año de la carrera de Médico y Cirujano de la Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala. Estudio descriptivo transversal realizado en 1097 estudiantes, en los cuales se aplicó el cuestionario del método paso a paso para la vigilancia de factores de riesgo de enfermedades crónicas (STEPS) modificado. Se encontró 610 (56%) estudiantes sexo femenino, la media de edad fue de 19 años (±1.56); en relación a los factores de riesgo modificables: 219 (20%) consumen cigarrillo, 274 (25%) consumen alcohol nocivamente, 838 (76%) se alimentan de forma inadecuada, 887 (81%) no practica actividad física significativa; se identificó que 405 (37%) presentaron un índice cintura – cadera considerado de riesgo. En cuanto a los factores asociados a la presencia de hipertrigliceridemia: obesidad se identificó en 147 (13%) estudiantes (X2 de 104.98 y OR de 7), obesidad central en 204 (19%) (X2 de 55.74 y OR de 3), el sobrepeso en 330 (30%) (X2 de 53.4727 y OR de 3), presión arterial alta en 397 (36%) (X2 de 18.63 y OR de 2), y glucemia alterada en ayunas alta en 198 (18%) (X2 de 8.3 y OR de 2). La hipertrigliceridemia se presentó en 411 estudiantes (37%), siendo la edad más afectada la de 19 años. La mayoría de estudiantes estudiados es de sexo femenino. Existe una alta prevalencia de factores de riesgo modificables asociados a enfermedades crónicas no transmisibles, de estos se identificó que factores como obesidad, obesidad central, sobrepeso, presión arterial alta y glucemia alterada en ayunas alta tienen una significativa asociación al desarrollo de hipertrigliceridemia, con un aumento del riesgo de 7, 3, 3, 2 y 2, respectivamente

    El Grupo "Hypermedia. Taller de configuración arquitectónica" lo formamos un colectivo de profesores (doctores y asociados), doctorandos y becarios agrupados en la enseñanza del dibujo y el dibujar como herramienta para la elaboración profesional de proyectos de arquitectura en los primeros (1º y 2º año) semestres de la carrera de Arquitecto Superior. Algunos de nosotros empezamos hace más de 35 años alrededor de los ordenadores, estudiando y simulando procesos de generación de propuestas arquitectónicas. Trabajábamos en el Centro de Cálculo de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid (desde el año 1968, en un seminario denominado: "Análisis y generación de formas arquitectónicas"). Después, desde el 1974, en la Cátedra de Análisis de Formas Arquitectónicas, hemos participado y contribuido a la definición del Área de conocimiento denominada "Expresión Gráfica Arquitectónica" y hemos constituido la asociación de Departamentos del Área de todas las Escuelas de Arquitectura del Estado Español, que, en paralelo, ha creado una Revista especializada (EGA lleva editados 10 números anuales) y sostiene la convocatoria bianual de un Congreso Internacional sobre los temas propios de nuestra especialización. Hoy el Grupo, amplio por razón de la situación estratégica del dibujar (inespecífico, geométrico y arquitectónico) como medio indispensable en el trabajo de proyectar arquitectura, se organiza en varios subgrupos que se reparten puntualmente las preocupaciones y temáticas globales (colectivas) que sistemáticamente aparecen, produciendo gran cantidad de trabajos que, en forma de encargos subvencionados, tesis doctorales, monografías, ponencias y artículos aparecen año tras año en diversos medios de difusión (u edición). Nuestros trabajos no son todos estratégicos, pero son todos (sean o no aplicaciones) centrales en la formación arquitectónica, concernidos con la fundamentación teórica, social, científica y técnica de lo medio ambiental (lo arquitectónico entendido como lo envolvente adecuado al albergue de actividades humanas socializadas)

    Prevalence of bleeding secondary to anticoagulation and mortality in patients with atrial fibrillation admitted with SARS-CoV-2 infection.

    Atrial fibrillation (AF) is common in patients admitted with severe COVID-19. However, there is limited data about the management of chronic anticoagulation therapy in these patients. We assessed the anticoagulation and incidence of major cardiovascular events in hospitalized patients with AF and COVID-19. We retrospectively investigated all consecutive patients with AF admitted with COVID-19 between March and May 2020 in 9 Spanish hospitals. We selected a control group of non-AF patients consecutively admitted with COVID-19. We compared baseline characteristics, incidence of major bleeding, thrombotic events and mortality. We used propensity score matching (PSM) to minimize potential confounding variables, as well as a multivariate analysis to predict major bleeding and death. 305 patients admitted with AF and COVID-19 were included. After PSM, 151 AF patients were matched with 151 control group patients. During admission, low-molecular-weight heparin was the principal anticoagulant and the incidence of major bleeding and mortality were higher in the AF group [16 (10.6%) vs 3 (2%), p=0.003; 52 (34.4%) vs 35 (23.2%), p=0.03, respectively]. The multivariate analysis showed the presence of AF as independent predictor of in-hospital major bleeding and mortality in COVID-19 patients. In AF group, a secondary multivariate analysis identified high levels of D-dimer as independent predictor of in-hospital major bleeding. AF patients admitted with COVID-19 represent a population at high risk for bleeding and mortality during admission. It seems advisable to individualize anticoagulation therapy during admission, considering patient specific bleeding and thrombotic risk.S

    Bead-assisted SARS-CoV-2 multi-antigen serological test allows effective identification of patients

    Many new aspects of COVID-19 disease, including different clinical manifestations, have been identified during the pandemic. The wide array of symptoms and variation in disease severity after SARS-CoV-2 infection might be related to heterogeneity in the immune responses of different patients. Here we describe a new method for a simple multi-antigen serological test that generates a full picture of seroconversion in a single reaction. The assay is based on the detection by flow cytometry of multiple immunoglobulin classes (isotypes) specific for four SARS-CoV-2 antigens: the Spike glycoprotein (one of the highly immunogenic proteins), its RBD fragment (the major target for neutralising antibodies), the nucleocapsid protein and the main cysteine-like protease. Until now, most diagnostic serological tests measured antibodies to only one antigen and some patients seemed to not make any antibody response. Our data reveal that while most patients respond against all the viral antigens tested, others show a marked bias to make antibodies against either proteins exposed on the viral particle or those released after cellular infection. Combining all the four antigens and using machine learning techniques, it was possible to clearly discriminate between patients and healthy controls with 100% confidence. Further, combination of antigens and different immunoglobulin isotypes in this multi-antigen assay improved the classification of patients with mild and severe disease. Introduction of this method will facilitate massive screenings of patients to evaluate their immune response.     Single-reaction multi-antigen serological test for comprehensive evaluation of SARS-CoV-2 patients by flow cytometry

    Here, we describe a new, simple, highly multiplexed serological test that generates a more complete picture of seroconversion than single antigen-based assays. Flow cytometry is used to detect multiple Ig isotypes binding to four SARS-CoV-2 antigens: the Spike glycoprotein, its RBD fragment (the main target for neutralizing antibodies), the nucleocapsid protein, and the main cysteine-like protease in a single reaction. Until now, most diagnostic serological tests measured antibodies to only one antigen and in some laboratory-confirmed patients no SARS-CoV-2-specific antibodies could be detected. Our data reveal that while most patients respond against all the viral antigens tested, others show a marked bias to make antibodies against either proteins exposed on the viral particle or those released after cellular infection. With this assay, it was possible to discriminate between patients and healthy controls with 100% confidence. Analysing the response of multiple Ig isotypes to the four antigens in combination may also help to establish a correlation with the severity degree of disease.
