The effective-thickness concept in laminated-glass elements under static loading

    Get PDF
Laminated glass is a sandwich element consisting of two or more glass sheets, with one or more interlayers of a polymer such as polyvinyl butyral (PVB). The static response of sandwich elements such as laminated-glass beams and plates can be modeled using analytical or numerical models in which the glass is usually modeled as linear-elastic and the PVB as linear-viscoelastic material, respectively. As a way to simplify the laminated-glass calculations, the concept of effective thickness has been recently proposed, which allows the calculation of laminated-glass beams as monolithic beams using an apparent or effective thickness. In this work, equations for the effective thickness of laminated-glass beams are derived from the analytical model proposed by Koutsawa and Daya and the results provided by this model are compared with the models of Bennison et al. and Galuppi and Royer-Carfagni. Finally, some static experimental tests were performed on several laminated-glass beams under distributed loading in order to validate the predictions of the model

In spite of the interest of the public authorities to offer a lending telematic service of e-books, this is still under study and development withing the university. Making a comparative analysis of the general overview of this issue, as part of a research project developed by the Library of the University of Oviedo, the following article seeks to set in the library environment both consolidated realities as those problems and hesitations found on its way. Deriving this study, grew a reflection on the acquisition and procurement models present within the university and its discussed long-term viability. In light of the pressing finantial problems suffered by our libraries, we considered a possible alternative: the interlibrarian lending. As derived from this study, there has been reflection on the acquisition and procurement models present within the university and discussed long-term viability. In light of the pressing financial problems suffered by our libraries we considered a possible alternative: the e-books’ interlibrary loan (ILL)

Enhanced equivalent model algorithm for solar mirrors

The SolarPACES Reflectance Guideline provides an essential tool to obtain comparable reflectance measurements, but because of the lack of adequate commercial instrumentation, till now the exhaustive characterization of reflectance behaviour versus incidence ¿i and (half) acceptance angle ¿ is unachieved. An expert group in Task III has been working to outline some practicable solutions. The Equivalent Model Algorithm (EMA) was found quite promising: with few input data, EMA allows to predict any reflectance feature by computation. The recent availability of reliable reflectance measurements at oblique incidence made possible the refinement of EMA by analysing a representative set of commercial solar mirrors. This paper describes the new EMA for solar mirror, named EMA4SM, and reports its validation

    General purpose MDE tools

    Get PDF
MDE paradigm promises to release developers from writing code. The basis of this paradigm consists in working at such a level of abstraction that will make it easyer for analysts to detail the project to be undertaken. Using the model described by analysts, software tools will do the rest of the task, generating software that will comply with customer's defined requirements. The purpose of this study is to compare general purpose tools available right now that enable to put in practice the principles of this paradigm and aimed at generating a wide variety of applications composed by interactive multimedia and artificial intelligence components

A Performance Comparison of Virtual Backbone Formation Algorithms for Wireless Mesh Networks

    Get PDF
Currently wireless networks are dominant by star topology paradigm. Its natural the evolution is towards wireless mesh multi-hop networks. This article compares the performance of several algorithms for virtual backbone formation in ad hoc mesh networks both theoretically and through simulations. Firstly, an overview of the algorithms is given. Next, the results of the algorithm simulations made with the program Dominating Set Simulation Suite (DSSS) are described and interpreted. We have been extended the simulator to simulate the Mobile Backbone Network Topology Synthesis Algorithm. The results show that this algorithm has the best combination of performance characteristics among the compared algorithms

Laser dosimetry planning tool for colonoscopic tumor resection

    Get PDF
Gastrointestinal tumoral pathologies are quite common nowadays. Diseases such as gastric antral vascular ectasia (GAVE) or actinic proctitis may require endoscopic surgery. Argon Plasma Coagulated (APC) or radiofrequency are usually employed. However, they present disadvantages, such as the reduced treated area, magnetic resonance incompatibility, or an uncontrolled ablation depth. Optical surgery could avoid these problems and contribute to a better and controlled treatment result, either ablative or coagulative, in a minimally invasive, non-contact and non-ionizing way. The treatment area could also be increased by adequate optical fiber probe design. In this work laser surgery is analyzed for resection of colonic tumors. A Monte Carlo model is employed to study optical propagation, and an optical ablation approach allows the estimation of the resected volume. The ablation approach is based on plasma-induced ablation, particularly taking into account the freeelectron density generated in the tissue by the pulsed optical source. Several wavelengths, radii and malignant tissue types are considered, either healthy, adenomatous or even coagulated tissues. Optimum source parameters as a function of tumor geometry can be estimated for treatment planning. This work has been partially supported by the project MAT2012-38664-C02-01 of the Spanish Ministery of Economy and Competitiveness and by San Cándido Foundation

Developing a Business Application with BPM and MDE

    Get PDF
In this paper we have designed an architecture for the generation of a business application, that allows to business users to adapt their processes to the constant change. At the moment all the architectures based to a great extent on SOA allow to modify the processes in a short period of time, but we go beyond and give the possibility to the business user of modifying their processes. To design this architecture, we rely on the fundamental use of two technologies: BPM (Business Process Modeling) and MDE (Model Driven Engineering). Inside these technologies we focus on the creation of a business process notation extended from BPMN that is agile, easy to learn and design, and capable to provide semantic information about the process. Therefore this notation allows business process to modify their processes to achieve the proposed goal

Model Driven Engineering (MDE) is gaining ever more strength due to the fact that with MDE the software development can be much more productive and this is the way to go closer to real software industrialization. With MDA TALISMAN, we have succeeded in creating complex software solutions for food traceability adapted to different customers, ready to be deployed. We rely on the approach to MDE most extended at present, MDA (Model-Driven Development) but as we shall see, we also use the main pillars that support the Software Factories, The proposal from Microsoft to MDE. Besides, in this paper we present five cases of success with MDA TALISMAN
