The necessity of disposable biosensors for simple, rapid and inexpensive
analysis in fields such as clinical, environmental or industrial has been highlighted
over the past decade. In this way, screen-printed electrodes (SPEs) have been shown
as inexpensive and reproducible devices for mass production of miniaturized
biosensors [1-4]. These transducers, building by sequential layer deposition on the
surface of ceramic or plastic substrates and curing steps, have been conventionally
linked to the sensing element by adsorption, cross-linking, electropolymerization or
covalent bonding. Bioelements are commonly immobilized after the printing and
firing processes, because of the high temperatures reached during the curing step [5].
The immobilization procedure requires maintaining the initial properties of the
enzyme intact. Thus, successful developments of biosensors largely rely on the cost
and stability of the sensing elements [3].
Even if the above-mentioned immobilization procedures are efficient, they
imply additional steps after fabrication of the screen-printed carbon electrodes
(SPCEs), which extends the whole biosensor manufacturing. Screen-printing
techniques also offer another attractive immobilization procedure consisting of
printing the biological material. Enzymes, which are proteins able to catalyse specific
chemical reactions in vivo, are by far the most commonly employed bioelements [1].
Enzymes can be integrated into the ink to form the sensing paste, which can be
screen-printed resulting in biosensors fabricated by only one technology [6-8].
Undoubtedly, this immobilization procedure, which is known as automated
immobilization, is particularly interesting for mass production of disposable
biosensors.
This work presents a simple way for preparing SPCEs modified with
Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) for the determination of Levetiracetam (LEV). This
second-generation antiepileptic drug (AEDs) has been previously determined using a
SPCE-biosensor based on the immobilization of Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) by
pyrrole electropolymerization [9] and covalent bonding [10] The screen-printing of
HRP-containing ink (SPCHRPEs) offers a higher rapidity and simplicity in the
manufacturing process of biosensors for LEV determination
Optimization of the anaerobic co-digestion of pasteurized slaughterhouse waste, pig slurry and glycerine
The feasibility of co-digestion of blends of two different animal by-products (pig manure and pasteurized slaughterhouse waste) and recovered glycerine was studied in mesophilic conditions. Experiments were performed in a lab-scale CSTR along 490 days, with a hydraulic retention time of 21–33 days and with a step-wise increased organic loading rate, by adding and/or changing the wastes ratio, from 0.8 to 3.2 kgCOD m-3 d-1. The best methane production rate (0.64 Nm3CH4 m-3 d-1) represented an increment of 2.9-fold the initial one (0.22 Nm3CH4 m-3 d-1 with pig manure solely). It was attained with a ternary mixture composed, in terms of inlet volatile solids, by 35% pig slurry, 47% pasteurized slaughterhouse waste and 18% glycerine. This blend was obtained through a stepwise C/N adjustment: this strategy led to a more balanced biodegradation due to unstressed bacterial populations through the performance, showed by the VFA-related indicators. Besides this, an improved methane yield (+153%) and an organic matter removal efficiency (+83%), regarding the digestion of solely pig slurry, were attained when the C/N ratio was adjusted to 10.3.Postprint (author's final draft
Strategies for ocular administration of antiviral and antioxidant agents
“By Order of the Peaky Blinders”: A Comparative Analysis of the Real and Fictional Birmingham Gang
Traballo Fin de Grao en Lingua e Literatura Inglesas. Curso 2018-2019The fact that we are living in a golden age of the TV series cannot be overlooked. Almost one hundred new shows per year are being released and more than three hundred and fifty are still broadcasting. Among them, productions with a historical strand stand out both on
TV and online channels. Peaky Blinders (2013- ) is one of such TV series, which portraits the history of a gangster family in the 1920's. The show is categorised as historical fiction and claims to have based its plot on the real Peaky Blinders gang which was active mainly in Birmingham from the 1890's to 1930.
The aim of this dissertation is a comparative and contrastive analysis between the historical, social and cultural background of the real Peaky Blinders and the reinterpretation of these aspects in the TV show. For this purpose, an introduction to the historical and social background of Birmingham at that time will be included as well as a detailed study of the differences and similarities between the real world of the Peaky Blinders and its adaptation to the screen, which will be illustrated with examples from the series and supported by a comprehensive reading of the most important bibliography on the subject. A second objective will tackle the reasons which led the screenwriter to adapt the history of this gang in one way or another and the issue of how much is real history and how much is fictio
