Simulation of electrostatic ion instabilities in the presence of parallel currents and transverse electric fields
A spatially two-dimensional electrostatic PIC simulation code was used to study the stability of a plasma equilibrium characterized by a localized transverse dc electric field and a field-aligned drift for L is much less than Lx, where Lx is the simulation length in the x direction and L is the scale length associated with the dc electric field. It is found that the dc electric field and the field-aligned current can together play a synergistic role to enable the excitation of electrostatic waves even when the threshold values of the field aligned drift and the E x B drift are individually subcritical. The simulation results show that the growing ion waves are associated with small vortices in the linear stage, which evolve to the nonlinear stage dominated by larger vortices with lower frequencies
Conductivity of Strongly Coupled Striped Superconductor
We study the conductivity of a strongly coupled striped superconductor using
gauge/gravity duality (holography). The study is done analytically, in the
large modulation regime. We show that the optical conductivity is inhomogeneous
but isotropic at low temperatures. Near but below the critical temperature, we
calculate the conductivity analytically at small frequency \omega, and find it
to be both inhomogeneous and anisotropic. The anisotropy is imaginary and
scales like 1/\omega. We also calculate analytically the speed of the second
sound and the thermodynamic susceptibility.Comment: 32 page

High-K dielectric sulfur-selenium alloys.
Upcoming advancements in flexible technology require mechanically compliant dielectric materials. Current dielectrics have either high dielectric constant, K (e.g., metal oxides) or good flexibility (e.g., polymers). Here, we achieve a golden mean of these properties and obtain a lightweight, viscoelastic, high-K dielectric material by combining two nonpolar, brittle constituents, namely, sulfur (S) and selenium (Se). This S-Se alloy retains polymer-like mechanical flexibility along with a dielectric strength (40 kV/mm) and a high dielectric constant (K = 74 at 1 MHz) similar to those of established metal oxides. Our theoretical model suggests that the principal reason is the strong dipole moment generated due to the unique structural orientation between S and Se atoms. The S-Se alloys can bridge the chasm between mechanically soft and high-K dielectric materials toward several flexible device applications
Kinstate intervention in ethnic conflicts : Albania and Turkey compared
Albania and Turkey did not act in overtly irredentist ways towards their ethnic brethren in neighboring states after the end of communism. Why, nonetheless, did Albania facilitate the increase of ethnic conflict in Kosovo and Macedonia, while Turkey did not, with respect to the Turks of Bulgaria? I argue that kin-states undergoing transition are more prone to intervene in external conflicts than states that are not, regardless of the salience of minority demands in the host-state. The transition weakens the institutions of the kin-state. Experiencing limited institutional constraints, self-seeking state officials create alliances with secessionist and autonomist movements across borders alongside their own ideological, clan-based and particularistic interests. Such alliances are often utilized to advance radical domestic agendas. Unlike in Albania's transition environment, in Turkey there were no emerging elites that could potentially form alliances and use external movements to legitimize their own domestic existence or claims
A high pressure XRD setup at ADXRD beamline (BL-12) on Indus-2
A high pressure XRD measurement setup in the angle dispersive geometry has been setup in the Angle Dispersive X-ray diffraction beamline (BL-12) in Indus-2 synchrotron facility. The X-ray beam is collimated inside the Diamond Anvil Cell (DAC) using a pair of cross-slit collimators and 100 micron orifice in a 400 micron thick Ta sheet. With the use of an adaptive optics to ensure a converging beam at the sample position, the need of an X-ray beam collimator is eliminated making the alignment of the DAC quite easy. The alignment of the DAC with respect to the incident X-ray beam is made by placing it on a computer controlled sample mounting and alignment stage developed specifically for this setup. Interactive software has been developed to make the alignment of the X-ray through the DAC very easy and accurate. NIST standard LaB6 powder was used for test runs, and a few fine pieces of gold served as pressure calibrator. The data was recorded on a MAR345 Image plate detector
A coupled channel analysis of the centrally produced K+K- and pi+pi- final states in pp interactions at 450 GeV/c
A coupled channel analysis of the centrally produced K+K- and pi+pi- final
states has been performed in pp collisions at an incident beam momentum of 450
GeV/c. The pole positions and branching ratios to pipi and KK of the f0(980),
f0(1370), f0(1500) and f0(1710) have been determined. A systematic study of the
production properties of all the resonances observed in the pi+pi- and K+K-

Experimental evidence for a vector-like behaviour of Pomeron exchange
Evidence is presented that the Pomeron act as a non-conserved vector current.
A study has been made of the azimuthal angle phi, which is defined as the angle
between the pT vectors of the two outgoing protons, in the reaction pp ->
pp(X0) for those resonances (X0) which are compatible with being produced by
double Pomeron exchange. These distributions have been compared with a model
which describes the Pomeron as a non-conserved vector current and a qualitative
agreement is found. In addition, when one of the particles exchanged is known
to have spin 0, namely pi-Pomeron exchange, the phi distribution is flat.Comment: 13 pages, Latex, 4 Figure
An analytical program for fermion pair production in e+e- annihilation
We describe how to use {\tt ZFITTER}, a program based on a semi-analytical approach to fermion pair production in e^+ e^- annihilation and Bhabha scattering. A flexible treatment of complete {\cal O}(\alpha) QED corrections, also including higher orders, allows for three calculational {\bf chains} with different realistic sets of restrictions in the photon phase space. {\tt ZFITTER} consists of several {\bf branches} with varying assumptions on the underlying hard scattering process. One includes complete {\cal O}(\alpha) weak loop corrections with a resummation of leading higher-order terms. Alternatively, an ansatz inspired from S-matrix theory, or several model-independent effective Born cross sections may be convoluted. The program calculates cross sections, forward-backward asymmetries, and for \tau~pair production also the final-state polarization. Various {\bf interfaces} allow fits to be performed with different sets of free parameters
