On the Use of Dynamic GP Fitness Cases in Static and Dynamic Optimisation Problems
In Genetic Programming (GP), the fitness of individuals is normally computed by using a set of fitness cases (FCs). Research on the use of FCs in GP has primarily focused on how to reduce the size of these sets. However, often, only a small set of FCs is available and there is no need to reduce it. In this work, we are interested in using the whole FCs set, but rather than adopting the commonly used GP approach of presenting the entire set of FCs to the system from the beginning of the search, referred as static FCs, we allow the GP system to build it by aggregation over time, named as dynamic FCs, with the hope to make the search more amenable. Moreover, there is no study on the use of FCs in Dynamic Optimisation Problems (DOPs). To this end, we also use the Kendall Tau Distance (KTD) approach, which quantifies pairwise dissimilarities among two lists of fitness values. KTD aims to capture the degree of a change in DOPs and we use this to promote structural diversity. Results on eight symbolic regression functions indicate that both approaches are highly beneficial in GP
The Reef-fish Fauna of the Northern Patagonian Gulfs, Argentina, South-western Atlantic
A checklist containing 29 species of reef fishes recorded at the gulfs San José and Nuevo in Argentina (42°-43°S) is provided. The reef-fish assemblages of the San José and Nuevo gulfs are a mix of warm-temperate fauna from the South-western Atlantic Province, and cold-temperate species from the South-American Province; however, warm-temperate fishes dominated in both gulfs. The presence of the families Bovichtidae, Eleginopidae, Nototheniidae, Congiopodidae, Sebastidae and Moridae distinguished the Patagonian region from the rest of the Atlantic coast.Fil: Galvan, David Edgardo. Variability in Abundance of Temperate Reef Fishes Estimated by Visual Census
Identifying sources of sampling variation and quantifying their magnitude is critical to the interpretation of ecological field data. Yet, most monitoring programs of reef fish populations based on underwater visual censuses (UVC) consider only a few of the factors that may influence fish counts, such as the diver or census methodology. Recent studies, however, have drawn attention to a broader range of processes that introduce variability at different temporal scales. This study analyzes the magnitude of different sources of variation in UVCs of temperate reef fishes off Patagonia (Argentina). The variability associated with time-of-day, tidal state, and time elapsed between censuses (minutes, days, weeks and months) was quantified for censuses conducted on the five most conspicuous and common species: Pinguipes brasilianus, Pseudopercis semifasciata, Sebastes oculatus, Acanthistius patachonicus and Nemadactylus bergi. Variance components corresponding to spatial heterogeneity and to the different temporal scales were estimated using nested random models. The levels of variability estimated for the different species were related to their life history attributes and behavior. Neither time-of-day nor tidal state had a significant effect on counts, except for the influence of tide on P. brasilianus. Spatial heterogeneity was the dominant source of variance in all but one species. Among the temporal scales, the intra-annual variation was the highest component for most species due to marked seasonal fluctuations in abundance, followed by the weekly and the instantaneous variation; the daily component was not significant. The variability between censuses conducted at different tidal levels and time-of-day was similar in magnitude to the instantaneous variation, reinforcing the conclusion that stochastic variation at very short time scales is non-negligible and should be taken into account in the design of monitoring programs and experiments. The present study provides baseline information to design and interpret results from visual census programs in temperate reefs.Fil: Irigoyen, Alejo Joaquin. Network analysis suggests changes in food web stability produced by bottom trawl fishery in Patagonia
Demersal fisheries are one of the top anthropic stressors in marine environments. In the long term, some species are more vulnerable to fishery impacts than others, which can lead to permanent changes on the food web. The trophic relationships between predator and prey constitute the food web and it represents a network of the energy channels in an ecosystem. In turn, the network structure influences ecosystem diversity and stability. The first aim of this study was to describe for the first time the food web of the San Jorge Gulf (Patagonia Argentina) with high resolution, i.e. to the species level when information is available. The San Jorge Gulf was subject to intense fisheries thus our second aim is to analyse the food web structure with and without fishery to evaluate if the bottom-trawl industrial fishery altered the network structure and stability. We used several network metrics like: mean trophic level, omnivory, modularity and quasi-sign stability. We included these metrics because they are related to stability and can be evaluated using predator diets that can weight the links between predators and prey. The network presented 165 species organized in almost five trophic levels. The inclusion of a fishery node adds 69 new trophic links. All weighted and unweighted metrics showed differences between the two networks, reflecting a decrease in stability when fishery was included in the system. Thus, our results suggested a probable change of state of the system. The observed changes in species abundances since the fishery was established, could represent the state change predicted by network analysis. Our results suggests that changes in the stability of food webs can be used to evaluate the impacts of human activity on ecosystems.Fil: Funes, Manuela. The properties of the inner disk around HL Tau: Multi-wavelength modeling of the dust emission
We conducted a detailed radiative transfer modeling of the dust emission from
the circumstellar disk around HL Tau. The goal of our study is to derive the
surface density profile of the inner disk and its structure. In addition to the
Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array images at Band 3 (2.9mm), Band 6
(1.3mm), and Band 7 (0.87mm), the most recent Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array
(VLA) observations at 7mm were included in the analysis. A simulated annealing
algorithm was invoked to search for the optimum model. The radiative transfer
analysis demonstrates that most radial components (i.e., >6AU) of the disk
become optically thin at a wavelength of 7mm, which allows us to constrain, for
the first time, the dust density distribution in the inner region of the disk.
We found that a homogeneous grain size distribution is not sufficient to
explain the observed images at different wavelengths simultaneously, while
models with a shallower grain size distribution in the inner disk work well. We
found clear evidence that larger grains are trapped in the first bright ring.
Our results imply that dust evolution has already taken place in the disk at a
relatively young (i.e., ~1Myr) age. We compared the midplane temperature
distribution, optical depth, and properties of various dust rings with those
reported previously. Using the Toomre parameter, we briefly discussed the
gravitational instability as a potential mechanism for the origin of the dust
clump detected in the first bright ring via the VLA observations.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A (10 pages
The Radial Distribution of Dust Particles in the HL Tau Disk from ALMA and VLA Observations
Understanding planet formation requires one to discern how dust grows in protoplanetary disks. An important parameter to measure in disks is the maximum dust grain size present. This is usually estimated through measurements of the dust opacity at different millimeter wavelengths assuming optically thin emission and dust opacity dominated by absorption. However, Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations have shown that these assumptions might not be correct in the case of protoplanetary disks, leading to overestimation of particle sizes and to underestimation of the disk\u27s mass. Here, we present an analysis of high-quality ALMA and Very Large Array images of the HL Tau protoplanetary disk, covering a wide range of wavelengths, from 0.8 mm to 1 cm, and with a physical resolution of ~7.35 au. We describe a procedure to analyze a set of millimeter images without any assumption about the optical depth of the emission, and including the effects of absorption and scattering in the dust opacity. This procedure allows us to obtain the dust temperature, the dust surface density, and the maximum particle size at each radius. In the HL Tau disk, we found that particles have already grown to a few millimeters in size. We detect differences in the dust properties between dark and bright rings, with dark rings containing low dust density and small dust particles. Different features in the HL Tau disk seem to have different origins. Planet–disk interactions can explain substructure in the external half of the disk, but the internal rings seem to be associated with the presence of snow lines of several molecules
The VLA view of the HL Tau Disk - Disk Mass, Grain Evolution, and Early Planet Formation
The first long-baseline ALMA campaign resolved the disk around the young star
HL Tau into a number of axisymmetric bright and dark rings. Despite the very
young age of HL Tau these structures have been interpreted as signatures for
the presence of (proto)planets. The ALMA images triggered numerous theoretical
studies based on disk-planet interactions, magnetically driven disk structures,
and grain evolution. Of special interest are the inner parts of disks, where
terrestrial planets are expected to form. However, the emission from these
regions in HL Tau turned out to be optically thick at all ALMA wavelengths,
preventing the derivation of surface density profiles and grain size
distributions. Here, we present the most sensitive images of HL Tau obtained to
date with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array at 7.0 mm wavelength with a
spatial resolution comparable to the ALMA images. At this long wavelength the
dust emission from HL Tau is optically thin, allowing a comprehensive study of
the inner disk. We obtain a total disk dust mass of 0.001 - 0.003 Msun,
depending on the assumed opacity and disk temperature. Our optically thin data
also indicate fast grain growth, fragmentation, and formation of dense clumps
in the inner densest parts of the disk. Our results suggest that the HL Tau
disk may be actually in a very early stage of planetary formation, with planets
not already formed in the gaps but in the process of future formation in the
bright rings.Comment: Accepted by The Astrophysical Journal Letter
Automatic optimized 3D path planner for steerable catheters with heuristic search and uncertainty tolerance
In this paper, an automatic planner for minimally invasive neurosurgery is presented. The solution can provide the surgeon with the best path to connect a user-defined entry point with a target in accordance with specific optimality criteria guaranteeing the clearance from obstacles which can be found along the insertion pathway. The method is integrated onto the EDEN2020∗ programmable bevel-tip needle, a multi-segment steerable probe intended to be used to perform drug delivery for glioblastomas treatment. A sample-based heuristic search inspired to the BIT* algorithm is used to define the optimal solution in terms of path length, followed by a smoothing phase required to meet the kinematic constraint of the catheter. To account for inaccuracies in catheter modeling, which could de- termine unexpected control errors over the insertion procedure, an uncertainty margin is defined so that to include a further level of safety for the planning algorithm. The feasibility of the proposed solution was demonstrated by testing the method in simulated neurosurgical scenarios with different degree of obstacles occupancy and against other sample-based algorithms present in literature: RRT, RRT* and an enhanced version of the RRT-Connect
