    A non-linear static approach for the prediction of earthquake-induced deformation of geotechnical systems

    This paper illustrates an original and simple method to predict earthquake-induced deformations of geotechnical systems. The method is an extension of static non-linear analysis, and is conceived to predict the behaviour of geotechnical systems, like supported and unsupported excavations, that during the seismic motion accumulate displacements in a single direction. The seismic capacity of the system is described by its capacity curve, obtained either from a numerical push-over analysis or through a simplified procedure. The corresponding seismic demand is described by a combination of the elastic response spectrum, including basic information on the maximum amplitudes of the seismic motion, and a cyclic demand spectrum, that provides additional information about the equivalent number of cycles that contribute to the accumulation of displacements. In the paper, the method is described in detail and is validated through different procedures, namely: comparisons with experimental results obtained in the geotechnical centrifuge; comparison with results of advanced numerical analyses; extensive comparison, using a large database of seismic records, with the results of non-linear time-domain analyses. In its final part, the paper provides guidance for the practical use of the method for design

    Can people guess what happened to others from their reactions?

    Are we able to infer what happened to a person from a brief sample of his/her behaviour? It has been proposed that mentalising skills can be used to retrodict as well as predict behaviour, that is, to determine what mental states of a target have already occurred. The current study aimed to develop a paradigm to explore these processes, which takes into account the intricacies of real-life situations in which reasoning about mental states, as embodied in behaviour, may be utilised. A novel task was devised which involved observing subtle and naturalistic reactions of others in order to determine the event that had previously taken place. Thirty-five participants viewed videos of real individuals reacting to the researcher behaving in one of four possible ways, and were asked to judge which of the four ‘scenarios’ they thought the individual was responding to. Their eye movements were recorded to establish the visual strategies used. Participants were able to deduce successfully from a small sample of behaviour which scenario had previously occurred. Surprisingly, looking at the eye region was associated with poorer identification of the scenarios, and eye movement strategy varied depending on the event experienced by the person in the video. This suggests people flexibly deploy their attention using a retrodictive mindreading process to infer events

    On the seismic performance of straight integral abutment bridges: From advanced numerical modelling to a practice‐oriented analysis method

    The seismic performance of integral abutment bridges (IABs) is affected by the interaction with the surrounding soil, and specifically by the development of interaction forces in the embankment-abutment and soil-piles systems. In principle, these effects could be evaluated by means of highly demanding numerical computations that, however, can be carried out only for detailed studies of specific cases. By contrast, a low-demanding analysis method is needed for a design-oriented assessment of the longitudinal seismic performance of IABs. To this purpose, the present paper describes a design technique in which the frequency- and amplitude-dependency of the soil-structure interaction is modelled in a simplified manner. Specifically, the method consists of a time-domain analysis of a simplified soil-bridge model, in which soil-structure interaction is simulated by means of distributed nonlinear springs connecting a free-field ground response analysis model to the structural system. The results of this simplified method are validated against the results of advanced numerical analyses, considering different seismic scenarios. In its present state of development, the proposed simplified nonlinear model can be used for an efficient evaluation of the longitudinal response of straight IABs and can constitute a starting point for a prospective generalisation to three-dimensional response

    Action comprehension: deriving spatial and functional relations.

    A perceived action can be understood only when information about the action carried out and the objects used are taken into account. It was investigated how spatial and functional information contributes to establishing these relations. Participants observed static frames showing a hand wielding an instrument and a potential target object of the action. The 2 elements could either match or mismatch, spatially or functionally. Participants were required to judge only 1 of the 2 relations while ignoring the other. Both irrelevant spatial and functional mismatches affected judgments of the relevant relation. Moreover, the functional relation provided a context for the judgment of the spatial relation but not vice versa. The results are discussed in respect to recent accounts of action understanding

    MSR32 COVID-19 Beds’ Occupancy and Hospital Complaints: A Predictive Model

    Objectives COVID-19 pandemic limited the number of patients that could be promptly and adequately taken in charge. The proposed research aims at predicting the number of patients requiring any type of hospitalizations, considering not only patients affected by COVID-19, but also other severe viral diseases, including untreated chronic and frail patients, and also oncological ones, to estimate potential hospital lawsuits and complaints. Methods An unsupervised learning approach of artificial neural network’s called Self-Organizing Maps (SOM), grounding on the prediction of the existence of specific clusters and useful to predict hospital behavioral changes, has been designed to forecast the hospital beds’ occupancy, using pre and post COVID-19 time-series, and supporting the prompt prediction of litigations and potential lawsuits, so that hospital managers and public institutions could perform an impacts’ analysis to decide whether to invest resources to increase or allocate differentially hospital beds and humans capacity. Data came from the UK National Health Service (NHS) statistic and digital portals, concerning a 4-year time horizon, related to 2 pre and 2 post COVID-19 years. Results Clusters revealed two principal behaviors in selecting the resources allocation. In case of increase of non-COVID hospitalized patients, a reduction in the number of complaints (-55%) emerged. A higher number of complaints was registered (+17%) against a considerable reduction in the number of beds occupied (-26%). Based on the above, the management of hospital beds is a crucial factor which can influence the complaints trend. Conclusions The model could significantly support in the management of hospital capacity, helping decision-makers in taking rational decisions under conditions of uncertainty. In addition, this model is highly replicable also in the estimation of current hospital beds, healthcare professionals, equipment, and other resources, extremely scarce during emergency or pandemic crises, being able to be adapted for different local and national settings

    Shared multisensory experience affects Others' boundary: The enfacement illusion in schizophrenia

    Schizophrenia has been described as a psychiatric condition characterized by deficits in one's own and others' face recognition, as well as by a disturbed sense of body-ownership. To date, no study has integrated these two lines of research with the aim of investigating Enfacement Illusion (EI) proneness in schizophrenia. To accomplish this goal, the classic EI protocol was adapted to test the potential plasticity of both Self-Other and Other-Other boundaries. Results showed that EI induced the expected malleability of Self-Other boundary among both controls and patients. Interestingly, for the first time, the present study demonstrates that also the Other-Other boundary was influenced by EI. Furthermore, comparing the two groups, the malleability of the Other-Other boundary showed an opposite modulation. These results suggest that, instead of greater Self-Other boundary plasticity, a qualitative difference can be detected between schizophrenia patients and controls in the malleability of the Other-Other boundary. The present study points out a totally new aspect about body-illusions and schizophrenia disorder, demonstrating that EI is not only confined to self-sphere but it also affects the way we discriminate others, representing a potential crucial aspect in the social domain

    The Fictive Reflex : A Fresh Look at Reflexiveness and Narrative Representation

    Reflexiveness in literary contexts tends to be assimilated to self-reference; to the various ways in which a work may foreground the artifice and conventionality of its own features as representation, narrative or language. In this sense it is equated with metafiction, and regarded as a sophisticated and highly self-conscious use of narrative; here, however, I offer a contrary view of reflexiveness, one which sees it as elementary, pervasive, and constitutive of fictionality. In this view, there is a continuity between the basic logic of mimesis and the self-conscious “baring of the device” that, for the Russian Formalists, defines the literary. I begin by clarifying the nature of (fictive) representation as an act, and identify its intrinsic reflexiveness, and go on to compare this perspective with both the metafictional notion of reflexiveness and the theoretical discourse on reflexiveness around “mirror neurons” in cognitive literary studies. I then situate reflexiveness within a broader interdisciplinary environment, framed by complex systems science and the conceptualization of emergence in terms of representational recursiveness, which allows the two sides of the discussion so far to be understood as complementary aspects of reflexiveness, one of which aligns with the cultivation of (self-) consciousness, the other with the simple enactment of systemic relations. Finally I address the conceptual challenge presented by an account of narrative, and fiction, based upon reflexiveness, and suggest some ways in which it can be understood

    When Art Moves the Eyes: A Behavioral and Eye-Tracking Study

    The aim of this study was to investigate, using eye-tracking technique, the influence of bottom-up and top-down processes on visual behavior while subjects, na \u308\u131ve to art criticism, were presented with representational paintings. Forty-two subjects viewed color and black and white paintings (Color) categorized as dynamic or static (Dynamism) (bottom-up processes). Half of the images represented natural environments and half human subjects (Content); all stimuli were displayed under aesthetic and movement judgment conditions (Task) (top-down processes). Results on gazing behavior showed that content-related top-down processes prevailed over low-level visually-driven bottom-up processes when a human subject is represented in the painting. On the contrary, bottom-up processes, mediated by low-level visual features, particularly affected gazing behavior when looking at nature-content images. We discuss our results proposing a reconsideration of the definition of content-related top-down processes in accordance with the concept of embodied simulation in art perception
