Study of soils from two trenches opened in a slope of the Serra do Mar for the sliding analysis
The landslides are mass gravitational movements induced by gravitational force and by the action of water. This event is the most recurrent and the largest producer of damages in Brazil. The objective of this research was to characterize soils from two trenches opened in a slope ot the Serra do Mar susceptible to landslides. Soil samples were collected and submitted to the geotechnical and physicoqchemical tests, which followed the Brazilian standards. A micro aggregation of the soil from both trenches was found on the basis of the granulometry analysis performed with and without deflocculant26XXVI Congresso de Iniciação Científica Unicam
An Axiomatic Design interpretation for the synthesis of dimensional tolerances
Synthesizing dimensional tolerances of mechanical systems involves finding the values of the allowable variation of the functional dimensions. According to Axiomatic Design, the synthesis of mechanical tolerances can be described as a redundant decoupled design. This is why experienced engineers are proficient in solving this kind of problems, even if they never heard about Axiomatic Design and about the independence axiom. This paper presents an Axiomatic Design interpretation for the synthesis of dimensional tolerances. This interpretation shows that the traditional method for solving this class of problems implicitly obeys the independence and the minimum information axioms. (C) 2016 The Authors.
The present research aimed to analyze the impact of opportunistic behavior and bounded rationality impacts in the forms of contract adopted by the Agricultural Consortium of Specialized Farms (C.A.F.E.). For that, a case study was accomplished with the objective to embrace the most important characteristics of the theme as well as its process of development. The theoretical reference that gave support to this study it was the Transaction Costs Economics (TCE). Through the analysis of the variables approached by TCE, more specifically the behavioral factors (bounded rationality, opportunism) and forms of contract, it was concluded that, in the case studied the existence of opportunism interferes in certain way in the trust increasing the transactional costs. In the same sense the informational asymmetry enhances the agents’ bounded rationality; therefore it increases the transaction costs. This makes clear the importance of these elements in the definition in the contract form. In the case studied it was verified the need of a formalized and more specified and detailed contract structure so that it may reduce the transaction costs generated by the opportunistic actions and bounded rationality of the agents. According to the characteristics observed in the Consortium, the contract form that most adapt is the relational one, in which the main reference point is their own relationship when the autonomy among them is maintained. Trust and reputation are relevant elements.contracts, opportunism, bounded rationality, specialty coffees,
Design and Experimental Performance Evaluation of a Single-Layer Polarization-Insensitive Asymmetric Microwave Metasurface Absorber
This work reports on designing and experimentally evaluating an asymmetric metasurface absorber (MA) for wideband and polarization-insensitive operation in the C- and partial X-bands. As the core building block of the radio frequency (RF) subsystem, a unit-cell has been proposed, comprised of a dual-cut square-ring resonator (SRR) and a square patch placed above an FR4 substrate backed by a copper plate, inherently anisotropic. This arrangement efficiently converts linearly-polarized waves to cross-polarized reflected waves, achieving an 80% conversion efficiency over a wide bandwidth (BW) of 4.72–8.49 GHz. The reflected cross-polarized waves are also inhibited by strategically incorporating just three resistors on the top surface. Therefore, the polarization converter (PC) is transformed into an MA. In contrast to previously known MAs that depended on structural symmetry to maintain stable absorption performances across all polarization angles, this newly proposed asymmetric MA breaks that constraint. It achieves consistent absorption irrespective of variations in the polarization angle of the normal incident waves. The full-wave simulations have resulted in over 80% absorption, closely resembling the initial PC’s reflected BW. This MA has a compact assembly with a size of 0.22λ × 0.22λ and a thickness of 0.07λ. Absorption outputs are experimentally evaluated, resulting in more than 80% absorption, covering almost the entire C-band. This device can be used in different applications, such as radar cross-section assessments and energy-harvesting front-ends
Analysis of a Novel SPS Configuration Enabled by Lunar ISRU
Architectures for space-based solar power using in situ resource utilization (ISRU) of space materials can greatly reduce earth launch mass and can enable geometric capacity growth. These two factors allow the potential for low cost power generation after development of an in-space infrastructure. A collection of extraction and processing methods designed for lunar operation provides for large volumes of low cost solar panels. With abundant panels a novel configuration for solar power satellites (SPS) is possible which avoids many of the challenges of existing designs. The so-called "tin can" SPS has no moving parts. It includes integral thermal radiators. Station-keeping requirements are minimal. Structural integrity is designed-in so that balance of plant mass is minimal. In this work the architecture and infrastructure supporting the tin can SPS is developed to support rapid construction and deployment. Performance estimates for the SPS are provided regarding heat and energy balance, and specific mass requirements
