    Views on computer program documentation and automation

    Various aspects of the problem of program documentation and description are discussed. Particular emphasis is placed on the problem of semantics. It is pointed out that the information produced by documentation of a program, if presented to several different groups, may mean entirely different things to these groups. Recognition of the fact that people look at problems differently is proposed as a more practical approach to the problem of documentation rather than extensive use of standards or strict formatting. The difficulties involved in searching for ways to provide a common ground for the transmission and use of information are discussed

    On a criterion for vortex breakdown

    A criterion for the onset of vortex breakdown is proposed. Based upon previous experimental, computational, and theoretical studies, an appropriately defined local Rossby number is used to delineate the region where breakdown occurs. In addition, new numerical results are presented which further validate this criterion. A number of previous theoretical studies concentrating on inviscid standing-wave analyses for trailing wing-tip vortices are reviewed and reinterpreted in terms of the Rossby number criterion. Consistent with previous studies, the physical basis for the onset of breakdown is identified as the ability of the flow to sustain such waves. Previous computational results are reviewed and re-evaluated in terms of the proposed breakdown criterion. As a result, the cause of breakdown occurring near the inflow computational boundary, common to several numerical studies, is identified. Finally, previous experimental studies of vortex breakdown for both leading edge and trailing wing-tip vortices are reviewed and quantified in terms of the Rossby number criterion

    Net Energy of Finishing Diets Containing Light or Normal Test Weight Corn

    Net energy (NE) of diets containing 77.7% whole corn of either normal (53.8 Ib/bushel, NC) or light (40.8 Ib/bushel, LC) test weight was determined by total collection and indirect respiration calorimetry using six crossbred steers (avg wt 327 kg). Diet treatments were applied in a switchback design. The steers were initially adapted to ad libitum intake of either NC or LC diets for 32 days followed by 7 days total feces and urine collection. Gaseous exchange was subsequently measured for at least 48 hours. Intake was then reduced to an estimated 1.1 times maintenance for 6 days and collections were repeated. The steers were then switched between NC and LC diets and the entire process was repeated. As a percentage of gross energy consumed, fecal energy losses were 32% greater for the NC diet compared to LC (P\u3c .01). Urinary energy losses were unaffected by diet (P \u3e .20). Although energy lost as methane did not differ between diets at high intake, it was 27% greater for LC than NC at low intake (interaction P.20). Partial efficiencies of ME used for maintenance (k,) and gain (k,), as well as ME required for maintenance, also were not different (P\u3e.20). Diet NE for maintenance and gain was 13% greater for LC than NC. NE estimates calculated by difference for light and normal whole corn were 2.48, 1.65, 2.15 and 1.43 mcal/kg dry matter, respectively. These data demonstrate that corn of low test weight is not inherently lower in NE content than normal corn

    The Savvidy ``ferromagnetic vacuum'' in three-dimensional lattice gauge theory

    The vacuum effective potential of three-dimensional SU(2) lattice gauge theory in an applied color-magnetic field is computed over a wide range of field strengths. The background field is induced by an external current, as in continuum field theory. Scaling and finite volume effects are analyzed systematically. The first evidence from lattice simulations is obtained of the existence of a nontrivial minimum in the effective potential. This supports a ``ferromagnetic'' picture of gluon condensation, proposed by Savvidy on the basis of a one-loop calculation in (3+1)-dimensional QCD.Comment: 9pp (REVTEX manuscript).     How to adequately represent biological processes in modeling multifunctionality of arable soils

    Essential soil functions such as plant productivity, C storage, nutrient cycling and the storage and purification of water all depend on soil biological processes. Given this insight, it is remarkable that in modeling of these soil functions, the various biological actors usually do not play an explicit role. In this review and perspective paper we analyze the state of the art in modeling these soil functions and how biological processes could more adequately be accounted for. We do this for six different biologically driven processes clusters that are key for understanding soil functions, namely i) turnover of soil organic matter, ii) N cycling, iii) P dynamics, iv) biodegradation of contaminants v) plant disease control and vi) soil structure formation. A major conclusion is that the development of models to predict changes in soil functions at the scale of soil profiles (i.e. pedons) should be better rooted in the underlying biological processes that are known to a large extent. This is prerequisite to arrive at the predictive models that we urgently need under current conditions of Global Change

    Hybrid Sample-based Surface Rendering

    The performance of rasterization-based rendering on current GPUs strongly depends on the abilities to avoid overdraw and to prevent rendering triangles smaller than the pixel size. Otherwise, the rates at which highresolution polygon models can be displayed are affected significantly. Instead of trying to build these abilities into the rasterization-based rendering pipeline, we propose an alternative rendering pipeline implementation that uses rasterization and ray-casting in every frame simultaneously to determine eye-ray intersections. To make ray-casting competitive with rasterization, we introduce a memory-efficient sample-based data structure which gives rise to an efficient ray traversal procedure. In combination with a regular model subdivision, the most optimal rendering technique can be selected at run-time for each part. For very large triangle meshes our method can outperform pure rasterization and requires a considerably smaller memory budget on the GPU. Since the proposed data structure can be constructed from any renderable surface representation, it can also be used to efficiently render isosurfaces in scalar volume fields. The compactness of the data structure allows rendering from GPU memory when alternative techniques already require exhaustive paging

    Surface roughness has a huge impact on many important phenomena. The most important property of rough surfaces is the surface roughness power spectrum C(q). We present surface roughness power spectra of many surfaces of practical importance, obtained from the surface height profile measured using optical methods and the Atomic Force Microscope. We show how the power spectrum determines the contact area between two solids.     Endogenous Morphine Levels Are Increased in Sepsis: A Partial Implication of Neutrophils

    BACKGROUND: Mammalian cells synthesize morphine and the respective biosynthetic pathway has been elucidated. Human neutrophils release this alkaloid into the media after exposure to morphine precursors. However, the exact role of endogenous morphine in inflammatory processes remains unclear. We postulate that morphine is released during infection and can be determined in the serum of patients with severe infection such as sepsis. METHODOLOGY: The presence and subcellular immunolocalization of endogenous morphine was investigated by ELISA, mass spectrometry analysis and laser confocal microscopy. Neutrophils were activated with Interleukin-8 (IL-8) or lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Morphine secretion was determined by a morphine-specific ELISA. mu opioid receptor expression was assessed with flow cytometry. Serum morphine concentrations of septic patients were determined with a morphine-specific ELISA and morphine identity was confirmed in human neutrophils and serum of septic patients by mass spectrometry analysis. The effects of the concentration of morphine found in serum of septic patients on LPS-induced release of IL-8 by human neutrophils were tested. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We confirmed the presence of morphine in human neutrophil extracts and showed its colocalisation with lactoferrin within the secondary granules of neutrophils. Morphine secretion was quantified in the supernatant of activated human polymorphonuclear neutrophils in the presence and absence of Ca(2+). LPS and IL-8 were able to induce a significant release of morphine only in presence of Ca(2+). LPS treatment increased mu opioid receptor expression on neutrophils. Low concentration of morphine (8 nM) significantly inhibited the release of IL-8 from neutrophils when coincubated with LPS. This effect was reversed by naloxone. Patients with sepsis, severe sepsis and septic shock had significant higher circulating morphine levels compared to patients with systemic inflammatory response syndrome and healthy controls. Mass spectrometry analysis showed that endogenous morphine from serum of patient with sepsis was identical to poppy-derived morphine. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that morphine concentrations are increased significantly in the serum of patients with systemic infection and that morphine is, at least in part, secreted from neutrophils during sepsis. Morphine concentrations equivalent to those found in the serum of septic patients significantly inhibited LPS-induced IL-8 secretion in neutrophils
