What Does a habitus of the Soul Do? : The Case of the habitus of Faith in Bonaventure, Peter John Olivi and John Duns Scotus

While a habitus can be described as a disposition towards a certain type of act, such a definition is not sufficient to encompass the diversity of uses the medieval thinkers made of this concept. It is the aim of this paper to examine the habitus of faith in the voluntarist Franciscan tradition in order to illustrate several of its functions and how these varied from author to author. Studying how the habitus of faith works for Bonaventure, Peter John Olivi and John Duns Scotus allows us to examine different takes on these functions and illustrate the variety of possible positions even within a tradition that emphasizes the freedom and agency of the moral subject above all. We will emphasize the capacity a habitus grants to pick out its proper objects, in the present case, the objects of faith; the capacity to elicit certain acts that without it would not have been possible or at least that would not have had the moral value the habitus grants them; the capacity to unite several powers in the accomplishment of a given act.Peer reviewe

Évidence et raisons probables: Pierre d’Ailly et la scientificité de la théologie

International audienceIn the middle of fourteenth century, besides evidence and certitude, the probable occupies an increasingly important place in the evaluation of argumentation and the epistemic analysis of our concepts. This is particularly the case for Peter of Ailly. In his Commentary on the Sentences, the concept of the probable is as important as, or not more important than, the concept of evidence in order to qualify our knowledge. This contribution examines the place and function of the probable in the works of Peter of Ailly. The importance of the probable modifies the whole picture of our argumentation in natural philosophy as well as in theology. It characterizes the whole field of the "natural light" and "natural reason.

Objective - We have previously shown that epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) and its treatments have negative effects on long-term quality of life (QoL) and fatigue. The present multicenter study investigated the main menopausal symptoms and gynecological management of EOC survivors (EOCS). Methods - 166 patients with relapse-free ≥3 years after the end of treatment attended a consultation with a gynecologist, including a questionnaire related to vasomotor symptoms (VMS) and sexuality, a clinical examination, a blood sample and an osteodensitometry. QoL, fatigue, insomnia and mood disorders were measured with validated questionnaires and correlated to VMS. VMS and QoL were assessed according to natural menopause (NM) or surgical menopause (SM). Results - Mean age at the survey was 62 [21–83] years and stage III/IV (48%). Mean delay since the end of treatment was 6 years. Fifty-nine patients (36%) had SM. Half of patients reported VMS. Seventy-two percent of EOCS with SM had VMS compared to 41% with NM (P Conclusions - VMS and sexual disorders are frequently reported by EOCS, particularly among patients with SM. Most EOCS with menopausal symptoms could benefit from HRT to improve these symptoms
