Barriers to positive mental health in a young offenders institution: A qualitative study
Objective: To explore the barriers to positive mental health in a group of young offenders.
Design A qualitative approach was used to provide insight into the ways in which mental health for young offenders is experienced and managed. Setting A Young Offenders Institute (YOI) accommodating males aged between 18 and 21 years.
Method: Participants were recruited voluntarily using posters. Twelve offenders participated in focus groups and an additional three interviews were carried out with individuals who felt uncomfortable in the focus group situation.
Results: Participants stressed that feelings in a YOI could not be shared due to the masculine ethos that had been created on the wings. Listener services were reported to be ineffective for support because using them would show weakness and vulnerability to other prisoners. Visiting time was the main highlight in the routine for most young offenders; however, leaving family and friends was difficult. In dealing with these emotions young offenders would use coping mechanisms, including acts of aggression to vent built-up frustrations. The issue of prison staff and their effect on mental health was raised by all offenders involved in the research. Unanimously, it was suggested that there are both excellent prison officers who engage with the prisoners, and staff who abuse their power and treat prisoners disrespectfully.
Conclusion: Promoting mental health is not the principle business of a YOI. However, this research has generated some issues for consideration for governors and those working within this setting
Co-occurrence and clustering of health conditions at age 11: cross-sectional findings from the Millennium Cohort Study
OBJECTIVES: To identify patterns of co-occurrence and clustering of 6 common adverse health conditions in 11-year-old children and explore differences by sociodemographic factors. DESIGN: Nationally representative prospective cohort study. SETTING: Children born in the UK between 2000 and 2002. PARTICIPANTS: 11 399 11-year-old singleton children for whom data on all 6 health conditions and sociodemographic information were available (complete cases). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Prevalence, co-occurrence and clustering of 6 common health conditions: wheeze; eczema; long-standing illness (excluding wheeze and eczema); injury; socioemotional difficulties (measured using Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire) and unfavourable weight (thin/overweight/obese vs normal). RESULTS: 42.4% of children had 2 or more adverse health conditions (co-occurrence). Co-occurrence was more common in boys and children from lower income households. Latent class analysis identified 6 classes: 'normative' (57.4%): 'atopic burdened' (14.0%); 'socioemotional burdened' (11.0%); 'unfavourable weight/injury' (7.7%); 'eczema/injury' (6.0%) and 'eczema/unfavourable weight' (3.9%). As with co-occurrence, class membership differed by sociodemographic factors: boys, children of mothers with lower educational attainment and children from lower income households were more likely to be in the 'socioemotional burdened' class. Children of mothers with higher educational attainment were more likely to be in the 'normative' and 'eczema/unfavourable weight' classes. CONCLUSIONS: Co-occurrence of adverse health conditions at age 11 is common and is associated with adverse socioeconomic circumstances. Holistic, child focused care, particularly in boys and those in lower income groups, may help to prevent and reduce co-occurrence in later childhood and adolescence
Influence of genotype and age of explant source on the capacity for somatic embryogenesis of two Cavendish banana cultivars (Musa acuminata Colla, AAA)
The embryogenic capacities of flower explants from one- and two-week-old male inflorescence buds from Musa acuminata Cavendish, AAA, genotypes ‘Williams’ and ‘Grand Naine’ were investigated. Explants of hands with immature flowers were excised and induced for embryogenesis. Highlysignificant differences were found in the embryogenic response, depending on the genotype and the developmental stage of the buds from which the explants were excised. After four months of induction, the total percentage of callus formed ranged from 97.81% in explants of two-week-old ‘Williams’ buds to 52.11% in explants of two-week-old ‘Grand Naine’ buds. Embryogenic callus formation was, on average, higher in the two-week-old ‘Williams’ explants (10.01%) than in the one-week-old explants (0.78%). The opposite was true for ‘Grand Naine’, with 7.51% embryogenic callus produced in explants of one-week-old buds compared to 2.49% in two-week-old buds. Selected embryogenic calluses that were successfully established on proliferation medium led to embryogenic cell suspensions with good regeneration capacities. Fifteen to thirty-five percent of the embryos germinated, demonstrated high plant-conversion capacity (99%). The effect of the interaction between the developmental age ofexplant and the genotype on the embryogenesis response is discussed
Caregiving among community-dwelling grandparents in Jamaica
Grandparents play invaluable caregiving roles in the general upbringing of grandchildren. The objective of the present study is to provide a profile of grandparents providing care to co-resident grandchildren younger than 18 years old in Jamaica. A subsample of 451 grandparents providing care to co-resident grandchildren under than 18 years old was derived from a larger nationally-representative community-based study of 2943 older adults residing in Jamaica. Data pertaining to caregiving, demography, health, socioeconomic status, and social participation were analysed using bivariate and multivariate analyses. Seventy one percent of grandparents were involve in regular care of their grandchildren. Hypertension (65.9%), arthritis (39.5%) and diabetes (27.2%) were the most common non-communicable diseases among grandparents. Approximately 60% of grandparents relied on family members for income and few reported other sources. Attendance at religious services was high at 78% while only about 40% were involved in voluntary activities. Only age was confirmed as a significant predictor of frequency of care in multivariate analyses with grandparents 80 years and older being 64% less likely to be involved in regular care compared to 60-69 year olds. In conclusion, grandparents are actively engaged in the provision of care to grandchildren. Specific health and social interventions are required to support and empower grandparents in their caregiving roles

Double Parton Scattering Singularity in One-Loop Integrals
We present a detailed study of the double parton scattering (DPS)
singularity, which is a specific type of Landau singularity that can occur in
certain one-loop graphs in theories with massless particles. A simple formula
for the DPS singular part of a four-point diagram with arbitrary
internal/external particles is derived in terms of the transverse momentum
integral of a product of light cone wavefunctions with tree-level matrix
elements. This is used to reproduce and explain some results for DPS
singularities in box integrals that have been obtained using traditional loop
integration techniques. The formula can be straightforwardly generalised to
calculate the DPS singularity in loops with an arbitrary number of external
particles. We use the generalised version to explain why the specific MHV and
NMHV six-photon amplitudes often studied by the NLO multileg community are not
divergent at the DPS singular point, and point out that whilst all NMHV
amplitudes are always finite, certain MHV amplitudes do contain a DPS
divergence. It is shown that our framework for calculating DPS divergences in
loop diagrams is entirely consistent with the `two-parton GPD' framework of
Diehl and Schafer for calculating proton-proton DPS cross sections, but is
inconsistent with the `double PDF' framework of Snigirev.Comment: 29 pages, 8 figures. Minor corrections and clarifications added.

Modular and predictable assembly of porous organic molecular crystals
Nanoporous molecular frameworks are important in applications such as separation, storage and catalysis. Empirical rules exist for their assembly but it is still challenging to place and segregate functionality in three-dimensional porous solids in a predictable way. Indeed, recent studies of mixed crystalline frameworks suggest a preference for the statistical distribution of functionalities throughout the pores rather than, for example, the functional group localization found in the reactive sites of enzymes. This is a potential limitation for 'one-pot' chemical syntheses of porous frameworks from simple starting materials. An alternative strategy is to prepare porous solids from synthetically preorganized molecular pores. In principle, functional organic pore modules could be covalently prefabricated and then assembled to produce materials with specific properties. However, this vision of mix-and-match assembly is far from being realized, not least because of the challenge in reliably predicting three-dimensional structures for molecular crystals, which lack the strong directional bonding found in networks. Here we show that highly porous crystalline solids can be produced by mixing different organic cage modules that self-assemble by means of chiral recognition. The structures of the resulting materials can be predicted computationally, allowing in silico materials design strategies. The constituent pore modules are synthesized in high yields on gram scales in a one-step reaction. Assembly of the porous co-crystals is as simple as combining the modules in solution and removing the solvent. In some cases, the chiral recognition between modules can be exploited to produce porous organic nanoparticles. We show that the method is valid for four different cage modules and can in principle be generalized in a computationally predictable manner based on a lock-and-key assembly between modules
Internal and external cooling methods and their effect on body temperature, thermal perception and dexterity

Objective The present study aimed to compare a range of cooling methods possibly utilised by occupational workers, focusing on their effect on body temperature, perception and manual dexterity. Methods Ten male participants completed eight trials involving 30 min of seated rest followed by 30 min of cooling or control of no cooling (CON) (34C, 58% relative humidity). The cooling methods utilised were: ice cooling vest (CV0), phase change cooling vest melting at 14C (CV14), evaporative cooling vest (CVEV), arm immersion in 10C water (AI), portable water-perfused suit (WPS), heliox inhalation (HE) and ice slushy ingestion (SL). Immediately before and after cooling, participants were assessed for fine (Purdue pegboard task) and gross (grip and pinch strength) manual dexterity. Rectal and skin temperature, as well as thermal sensation and comfort, were monitored throughout. Results Compared with CON, SL was the only method to reduce rectal temperature (P = 0.012). All externally applied cooling methods reduced skin temperature (P0.05). Conclusion The present study observed that ice ingestion or ice applied to the skin produced the greatest effect on rectal and skin temperature, respectively. AI should not be utilised if workers require subsequent fine manual dexterity.
