    Geometric approach to non-relativistic Quantum Dynamics of mixed states

    In this paper we propose a geometrization of the non-relativistic quantum mechanics for mixed states. Our geometric approach makes use of the Uhlmann's principal fibre bundle to describe the space of mixed states and as a novelty tool, to define a dynamic-dependent metric tensor on the principal manifold, such that the projection of the geodesic flow to the base manifold gives the temporal evolution predicted by the von Neumann equation. Using that approach we can describe every conserved quantum observable as a Killing vector field, and provide a geometric proof for the Poincare quantum recurrence in a physical system with finite energy levels.Comment: 19 pages, 1 figure.     Otroacizzia soriae sp. nov., a new Miocene psyllid (Insecta, Hemiptera, Psyllidae) from Dominican amber

    new species of the fossil genus Otroacizzia Klimaszewski, 1996 (Hemiptera, Psyllidae) is described as Otroacizzia soriae sp. nov. on the basis of a female specimen. This species is preserved in mid-Miocene amber from La Toca mines, Dominican Republic. The genus Otroacizzia is the most diverse psylloid genus in Dominican amber, with four known species. The new species differs from the three previously known species by the presence of a subapical dark band in the fore wing from the anterior part of the end of vein Rs to the end of vein Cu1b, which has a gap in the middle of the cell c1. Other differences in the fore wing are the presence of a strongly curved vein Cu1b and a cell c1 clearly longer than cell m1. Finally, the antennal segment 3 of the new species is one and a half times longer than segment 4.Se describe una nueva especie del gĂ©nero fĂłsil Otroacizzia Klimaszewski, 1996 (Hemiptera, Psyllidae) a partir de un ejemplar hembra: Otroacizzia soriae sp. nov. Esta especie estĂĄ conservada en ĂĄmbar del Mioceno medio de las minas de La Toca en RepĂșblica Dominicana. Con cuatro especies conocidas, el gĂ©nero Otroacizzia es el gĂ©nero de psiloideo con mayor diversidad en el ĂĄmbar dominicano. La nueva especie difiere de las tres especies ya conocidas por la presencia de una banda oscura subapical en el ala anterior desde la parte anterior del final de la vena Rs hasta el final de la vena Cu1b, la cual presenta una discontinuidad en el medio de la celda c1. Otras diferencias en el ala anterior son la presencia de una vena Cu1b fuertemente curvada y una celda c1 claramente mĂĄs larga que la celda m1. Finalmente, el tercer segmento antenal de la nueva especie es una vez y media mĂĄs largo que el cuarto segmento

    Heterometallic drugs are emerging as a great alternative to conventional metallodrugs. Careful selection of different metallic fragments makes possible to enhance not only the therapeutic potential by a synergistic effect, but also to incorpore key features like traceability. Drugs that integrate traceability and therapy in one system are known as theranostic agents. In cancer research, theranostic agents are becoming increasingly important. They deliver crucial information regarding their biological interplay that can ultimately be used for optimization. The well-established therapeutic potential of PtII-, RuII- and AuI-based drugs combined with the outstanding optical properties of d6 transition metal complexes grant the delivery of traceable metallodrugs. These species can be easily fine-tuned through modification of their respective ligands to provide a new generation of drugs

    A method for the quantitative and reversible trapping of sulfidic gases from headspaces and its application to the study of wine reductive off-odors

    Some relevant food systems release tiny amounts of sulfidic gases, whose measurement is difficult because of their inherent instability. The present paper demonstrates that Cu(I) solutions trap quantitatively and stabilize sulfidic gases. Once trapped, the gases remain stable for weeks at 4 °C and at least 8 days at 75 °C. Trapped gases can be quantitatively released with tris(2-carboxyethyl) phosphine (TCEP) and brine dilution and then determined by GC. Trapping solutions, placed in 20-mL opened vials housed in 100 mL hermetically-sealed flasks containing wine in anoxia, have been used to monitor the release of sulfidic gases by wines, revealing that at 50 °C, up to 400 ÎŒg/L of H2S and 58 ÎŒg/L of MeSH can be released in 68 days, and 3–5 times more at 75 °C in 28 days. The possibility to differentiate between released and accumulated amounts provides key clues to understanding the fate of sulfidic gases in wine and other food systems

    We study, from the extrinsic point of view, the structure at infinity of open submanifolds, ϕ : Mm → Mn(Îș) isometrically immersed in the real space forms of constant sectional curvature Îș ≀ 0.We shall use the decay of the second fundamental form of the so-called tamed immersions to obtain a description at infinity of the submanifold in the line of the structural results in Greene et al.     Changes in organic matter, nitrogen, phosphorus and cations in soil as a result of fire and water erosion in a Mediterranean landscape

    10 pĂĄginas, 7 figuras, 9 tablas.Fire affects large parts of the dry Mediterranean shrubland, resulting in erosion and losses of plant nutrients. We have attempted to measure these effects experimentally on a calcareous hillside representative of such shrubland. Experimental fires were made on plots (4 m x 20 m) in which the fuel was controlled to obtain two different fire intensities giving means of soil surface temperature of 439 degrees C and 232 degrees C with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees C lasting for 36 min and 17 min. The immediate and subsequent changes induced by fire on the soil's organic matter content and other soil chemical properties were evaluated, together with the impact of water erosion. Seven erosive rain events, which occurred after the experimental fires (from August 1995 to December 1996), were selected, and on them runoff and sediment produced from each plot were measured. The sediments collected were weighed and analysed. Taking into account the variations induced by fire on the soil properties and their losses by water erosion, estimates of the net inputs and outputs of the soil system were made. Results show that the greatest losses of both soil and nutrients took place in the 4 months immediately after the fire. Plots affected by the most intense fire showed greater losses of soil (4077 kg ha(-1)) than those with moderate fire intensity (3280 kg ha(-1)). The unburned plots produced the least sediment (72.8 kg ha(-1)). Organic matter and nutrient losses by water erosion were related to the degree of fire intensity. However, the largest losses of N-NH4+ and N-NO3- by water erosion corresponded to the moderate fire (8.1 and 7.5 mg N m(-2), respectively).Peer reviewe

    Oblique incidence and polarization effects in coupled gratings

    Oblique incidence and polarization orientation of the input beam have dramatic effects on the spectral response of coupled dielectric waveguide gratings. Coupled gratings with small periodic perturbations can be described as a problem of two coupled resonances at strictly normal incidence, but we find that the device involves four coupled resonances when oblique incidence and polarization effects are included in the analysis. Very small deviations from normal incidence change qualitatively the spectral response and four peaks are observed, whereas only two peaks are present at normal incidence. Polarization misalignments produce a decrease of the reflectance of the resonances at normal incidence, but a simultaneous shift of the spectral position of the peaks is observed at oblique incidence

    Surface-Impedance Formulation for Hollow-Core Waveguides Based on Subwavelength Gratings

    ABSTRACT A rigorous Surface Impedance (SI) formulation for planar waveguides is presented. This modal technique splits the modal analysis of the waveguide in two steps. First, we obtain the modes characteristic equations as a function of the SI and, second, we need to obtain the surface impedance values using either analytical or numerical methods. We validate the technique by comparison with wellknown analytical cases: the parallel-plate waveguide with losses and the dielectric slab waveguide. Then, we analyze an optical hollow-core waveguide defined by two high-contrast subwavelength gratings validating our results by comparison with reported values. Finally, we show the potential of our formulation with the analysis of a THz hollow-core waveguide defined by two surface-relief subwavelength gratings, including material losses in our formulation
