The importance of student’s engagement has been recently pointed out in research. However, there has been a lack of engagement assessment instrument, pertaining psychometric qualities. Objective: This paper presents the Portuguese adaptation of the “Student’s Engagement in School International Scale” (SESIS), drawn up from a12 countries international study (Lam et al., 2012; Lam et al., in press). Method: Psychometric properties of this scale were examined with data from 685 students from different grades (6th, 7th, 9th and 10th), from both sexes, and different regions of the country. Results: Factorial analysis of the results, with varimax rotation, lead to three different factors which explain 50.88% of the variance. The scale integrates the original 33 items, and cognitive, affective and behavioural dimensions. For the external validity study, the relationship between student’s engagement in school results and other school variables — academic performance, self-concept — was considered, and significant relations were observed, as expected. Conclusion: The data presented highlights the qualities of SESIS, as well as its usefulness for research purposes. Suggestion: It is suggested the investigation of the extension of SESIS’s three-dimensionality, in future studiesKeywords: Innovation, technology, research projects, etc. [Arial 10-point, justified alignment]

The longitudinal residual stresses in the friction stir-welded plates of 5A06 aluminium and pure copper were determined using the contour method. The results revealed the presence of high tensile and compressive residual stresses on the aluminium and copper sides, respectively. The residual stresses were detected on the weld zone as well as the thermo-mechanically affected zone (TMAZ) of the aluminium plate. In contrast, the compressive residual stresses in the copper plate had a much narrower width along the weld line. Peak tensile stresses up to 240 MPa were found in the TMAZ of the aluminium plate

Vitamin B 12 or cobalamin deficiency, a rare clinical entity in pediatric age, is found most exclusively in breastfed infants, whose mothers are strictly vegetarian non-supplemented or with pernicious anaemia. In this article, the authors describe a 10-month-old infant admitted for vomiting, refusal to eat and prostration. The infant was exclusively breastfed and diffi culties in introduction of new foods were reported. Failure to thrive since 5 months of age was also noticed. Laboratory evaluation revealed severe normocytic normochromic anaemia and cobalamin defi cit. A diagnosis of α-thalassemia trait was also made. Maternal investigation showed autoimmune pernicious anaemia. This case shows the severity of vitamin B 12 deficiency and the importance of adopting adequate and precocious measures in order to prevent potentially irreversible neurologic damage

Excitons and stacking order in h-BN

The strong excitonic emission at 5.75 eV of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) makes this material one of the most promising candidate for light emitting devices in the far ultraviolet (UV). However, single excitons occur only in perfect monocrystals that are extremely hard to synthesize, while regular h-BN samples present a complex emission spectrum with several additional peaks. The microscopic origin of these additional emissions has not yet been understood. In this work we address this problem using an experimental and theoretical approach that combines nanometric resolved cathodoluminescence, high resolution transmission electron microscopy and state of the art theoretical spectroscopy methods. We demonstrate that emission spectra are strongly inhomogeneus within individual flakes and that additional excitons occur at structural deformations, such as faceted plane folds, that lead to local changes of the h-BN stacking order

Quantum circuits to measure scalar spin chirality

The scalar spin chirality is a three-body physical observable that plays an outstanding role both in classical magnetism, characterizing non-co-planar spin textures, and in quantum magnetism, as an order parameter for chiral spin liquids. In quantum information, the scalar spin chirality is a witness of genuine tripartite entanglement. Here we propose an indirect measurement scheme, based on the Hadamard test, to estimate the scalar spin chirality for general quantum states. We apply our method to study chirality in two types of quantum states: generic one-magnon states of a ferromagnet, and the ground state of a model with competing symmetric and antisymmetric exchange. We show a single-shot determination of the scalar chirality is possible for chirality eigenstates, via quantum phase estimation with a single auxiliary qutrit. Our approach provides a unified theory of chirality in classical and quantum magnetism.L.I.R. thanks the New Talents program of Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian for financial support. From de investigations developed and the tests realised, we next present an abstract of our findings. 1) A robust definition of the concept of advertising web banner. The web banner is an advertising form built with specific computing applications, prepared for multimedia handling and to utilise specific languages, in such a way to increase the functional qualities of the banner by means of Javascript, Dhtml and Java Applets routines. The multimedia materials involved in the construction of the banners may have a visual or sonorous nature. In the scope of sizes, the Interactive Advertising Bureau has standardised fourteen sizes that make easier their exploration by the advertising network which operates through Internet, providing the advertiser the possibility to locate their banners in the diverse positions of the web page. 2) A taxonomy for the object of our study. After a deep analysis of the actual panorama of advertising web banners, we think there are basically two kind of banner categories: the simple ones and the elaborated. Simple advertising web banners are those that present a whole static and/or animated content which main function is to guide the user into the web banner of the advertiser. The elaborated category include those programmed in Dhtml/Javascript, Java, Flash/Director/Generator and the banners with combined programming. 3) An approach model to banner processing from the exposure to the creation, maintaining or changing of attitudes. The configuration of our proposal was studied in such a way to make possible to model a dynamic, parallel and independent processing of the variables present at the different interactive ad formats. In the Modified Elaborated Likelihood Model there is no distinction between the elements processed by central or peripheric way, but only one processing way to generate the different intensities of positive, negative or neutral attitudes, as a result of the interpretations of the subject in front of advertising stimulus. 4) A construction model of interactive advertising web banners. The banner as an ad format is the result of strategic, creative and technical thinking oriented to collective interpretation. 5) A formal method to determine positions in the display. The diversity of display and web pages obliged us to think about an invariable benchmark to the hypermedia experimental system. 6) A checking model of ad banner cognitive effectiveness. Our study hypothesis has been made according to a cause-effect approach, which has motivated us to use factorial design 2x2 of independent groups and random experimental treatments. To make a general summary of our findings, through a test hypothesis we verified that the different independent groups remember, at least one of the independent variables of ad banners. Individuals that participated in the experiment remember web banner position and, simultaneously, it's size and position. That is, individuals remember ad banners in function of their position, and it's size is directly influenced by it's position in the display

Electric field inversion asymmetry: Rashba and Stark effects for holes in resonant tunneling devices

We report experimental evidence of excitonic spin-splitting, in addition to the conventional Zeeman effect, produced by a combination of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction, Stark shift and charge screening. The electric-field-induced modulation of the spin-splitting are studied during the charging and discharging processes of p-type GaAs/AlAs double barrier resonant tunneling diodes (RTD) under applied bias and magnetic field. The abrupt changes in the photoluminescence, with the applied bias, provide information of the charge accumulation effects on the device.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
