    First passage time statistics of Brownian motion with purely time dependent drift and diffusion

    Systems where resource availability approaches a critical threshold are common to many engineering and scientific applications and often necessitate the estimation of first passage time statistics of a Brownian motion (Bm) driven by time-dependent drift and diffusion coefficients. Modeling such systems requires solving the associated Fokker-Planck equation subject to an absorbing barrier. Transitional probabilities are derived via the method of images, whose applicability to time dependent problems is shown to be limited to state-independent drift and diffusion coefficients that only depend on time and are proportional to each other. First passage time statistics, such as the survival probabilities and first passage time densities are obtained analytically. The analysis includes the study of different functional forms of the time dependent drift and diffusion, including power-law time dependence and different periodic drivers. As a case study of these theoretical results, a stochastic model for water availability from surface runoff in snowmelt dominated regions is presented, where both temperature effects and snow-precipitation input are incorporated

    Using poverty maps to improve the design of household surveys: the evidence from Tunisia

    In this paper we aim to propose a new method for improving the design effect of household surveys based on a two-stage design in which the first stage clusters, or Primary Selection Units (PSUs), are stratified along administrative boundaries. Improvement of the design effect can result in more precise survey estimates (smaller standard errors and confidence intervals) or in the reduction of the necessary sample size, i.e. a reduction in the budget needed for a survey. The proposed method is based on the availability of a previously conducted poverty maps, i.e. spatial descriptions of the distribution of per capita consumption expenditures, that are finely disaggregated in small geographic units, such as cities, municipalities, districts or other administrative partitions of a country that are directly linked to PSUs. Such information is then used to select PSUs with systematic sampling by introducing further implicit stratification in the survey design, so as to maximise the improvement of the design effect. Since per capita consumption expenditures estimated at PSU level from the poverty mapping are affected by (small) standard errors, in the paper we also perform a simulation study in order to take into account this addition variability

    DeepSUM: Deep Neural Network for Super-Resolution of Unregistered Multitemporal Images

    Recently, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been successfully applied to many remote sensing problems. However, deep learning techniques for multi-image super-resolution (SR) from multitemporal unregistered imagery have received little attention so far. This article proposes a novel CNN-based technique that exploits both spatial and temporal correlations to combine multiple images. This novel framework integrates the spatial registration task directly inside the CNN, and allows one to exploit the representation learning capabilities of the network to enhance registration accuracy. The entire SR process relies on a single CNN with three main stages: shared 2-D convolutions to extract high-dimensional features from the input images; a subnetwork proposing registration filters derived from the high-dimensional feature representations; 3-D convolutions for slow fusion of the features from multiple images. The whole network can be trained end-to-end to recover a single high-resolution image from multiple unregistered low-resolution images. The method presented in this article is the winner of the PROBA-V SR challenge issued by the European Space Agency (ESA)

    Is Penguin Circovirus Circulating Only in the Antarctic Circle? Lack of Viral Detection in Namibia

    The known host range of circoviruses is continuously expanding because of more intensive diagnostic activities and advanced sequencing tools. Recently, a new circovirus (penguin circovirus (PenCV)) was identified in the guano and cloacal samples collected from Adélie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae) and chinstrap penguins (Pygoscelis antarcticus) in Antarctica. Although the virus was detected in several asymptomatic subjects, a potential association with feather disease was speculated. To investigate the occurrence and implications of PenCV in other penguin species located outside of Antarctica, a broad survey was undertaken in African penguins (Spheniscus demersus) on two islands off the southern Namibian coast. For this purpose, specific molecular biology assays were developed and validated. None of the 151 blood samples tested positive for PenCV. Several reasons could explain the lack of PenCV positive samples. African penguins and Pygoscelis species are separated by approximately 6000 km, so there is almost no opportunity for transmission. Similarly, host susceptibility to PenCV might be penguin genus-specific. Overall, the present study found no evidence of PenCV in African penguin colonies in Namibia. Further dedicated studies are required to assess the relevance of PenCV among different penguin species

    Climatic, Ecophysiological, and Phenological Controls on Plant Ecohydrological Strategies in Seasonally Dry Ecosystems

    Large areas in the tropics and at mid-latitudes experience pronounced seasonality and inter-annual variability in rainfall and hence water availability. Despite the importance of these seasonally dry ecosystems (SDEs) for the global carbon cycling and in providing ecosystem services, a unifying ecohydrological framework to interpret the effects of climatic variability on SDEs is still lacking. A synthesis of existing data about plant functional adaptations in SDEs, covering some 400 species, shows that leaf phenological variations, rather than physiological traits, provide the dominant control on plant-water-carbon interactions. Motivated by this result, the combined implications of leaf phenology and climatic variability on plant water use strategies are here explored with a minimalist model of the coupled soil water and plant carbon balances. The analyses are extended to five locations with different hydroclimatic forcing, spanning seasonally dry tropical climates (without temperature seasonality) and Mediterranean climates (exhibiting out of phase seasonal patterns of rainfall and temperature). The most beneficial leaf phenology in terms of carbon uptake depends on the climatic regime: evergreen species are favoured by short dry seasons or access to persistent water stores, whereas high inter-annual variability of rainy season duration favours the coexistence of multiple drought-deciduous phenological strategies. We conclude that drought-deciduousness may provide a competitive advantage in face of predicted declines in rainfall totals, while reduced seasonality and access to deep water stores may favour evergreen species.     L’obiettivo dello screening uditivo neonatale universale è di ottenere una diagnosi precoce di ipoacusia congenita. Non appena confermata la perdita uditiva, è necessario intervenire dal punto di vista riabilitativo. Nell’ambito del progetto del Ministero della Salute CCM 2013 “Programma regionale di identificazione, intervento e presa in carico precoci per la prevenzione dei disturbi comunicativi nei bambini con deficit uditivo” un gruppo di professionisti appartenenti a centri di terzo livello con un programma regionale di screening uditivo neonatale, ha analizzato i limiti e i punti di forza dell’attuale impostazione dei programmi regionali di screening uditivo neonatale mediante l’analisi SWOT e la realizzazione di una matrice TOWS. Alcune criticità sono rappresentate dalla copertura dello screening e dal numero di persi allo screening. Sono state sviluppate raccomandazioni volte a migliorare l’efficacia di tali programmi. Sono emerse la necessità di una regolamentazione uniforme dei programmi di screening a livello regionale e nazionale, e il bisogno di ricevere informazioni e formazione aggiornate, di alta qualità, e condivise per familiari e operatori

    A probabilistic sediment cascade model of sediment transfer in the Illgraben

    We present a probabilistic sediment cascade model to simulate sediment transfer in a mountain basin (Illgraben, Switzerland) where sediment is produced by hillslope landslides and rockfalls and exported out of the basin by debris flows and floods. The model conceptualizes the fluvial system as a spatially lumped cascade of connected reservoirs representing hillslope and channel storages where sediment goes through cycles of storage and remobilization by surface runoff. The model includes all relevant hydrological processes that lead to runoff formation in an Alpine basin, such as precipitation, snow accumulation, snowmelt, evapotranspiration, and soil water storage. Although the processes of sediment transfer and debris flow generation are described in a simplified manner, the model produces complex sediment discharge behavior which is driven by the availability of sediment and antecedent wetness conditions (system memory) as well as the triggering potential (climatic forcing). The observed probability distribution of debris flow volumes and their seasonality in 2000–2009 are reproduced. The stochasticity of hillslope sediment input is important for reproducing realistic sediment storage variability, although many details of the hillslope landslide triggering procedures are filtered out by the sediment transfer system. The model allows us to explicitly quantify the division into transport and supply-limited sediment discharge events. We show that debris flows may be generated for a wide range of rainfall intensities because of variable antecedent basin wetness and snowmelt contribution to runoff, which helps to understand the limitations of methods based on a single rainfall threshold for debris flow initiation in Alpine basins

    Clinical pregenetic screening for stroke monogenic diseases: Results from lombardia GENS registry

    BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Lombardia GENS is a multicentre prospective study aimed at diagnosing 5 single-gene disorders associated with stroke (cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy, Fabry disease, MELAS [mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes], hereditary cerebral amyloid angiopathy, and Marfan syndrome) by applying diagnostic algorithms specific for each clinically suspected disease METHODS: We enrolled a consecutive series of patients with ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke or transient ischemic attack admitted in stroke units in the Lombardia region participating in the project. Patients were defined as probable when presenting with stroke or transient ischemic attack of unknown etiopathogenic causes, or in the presence of <3 conventional vascular risk factors or young age at onset, or positive familial history or of specific clinical features. Patients fulfilling diagnostic algorithms specific for each monogenic disease (suspected) were referred for genetic analysis. RESULTS: In 209 patients (57.4\ub114.7 years), the application of the disease-specific algorithm identified 227 patients with possible monogenic disease. Genetic testing identified pathogenic mutations in 7% of these cases. Familial history of stroke was the only significant specific feature that distinguished mutated patients from nonmutated ones. The presence of cerebrovascular risk factors did not exclude a genetic disease. CONCLUSIONS: In patients prescreened using a clinical algorithm for monogenic disorders, we identified monogenic causes of events in 7% of patients in comparison to the 1% to 5% prevalence reported in previous series
