    Histomorphological and functional contralateral symmetry in the gastrocnemius muscles of the laboratory rat

    It is usual in anatomical and physiological research to assess the effects of some intervention on extremities (e.g., training programmes or injury recovery protocols) using one muscle for the intervention and its contralateral as control. However, the existence of laterality (left-handedness or right-handedness) in athletes of different specialties is widely recognized. In rats, gastrocnemius is one of the muscles most widely used because of its importance in locomotion and high relative limb mass. Since we have not found studies reporting laterality assessment on the morphology and function in rat gastrocnemius, our study aimed to evaluate the fibre histochemical, morphometrical and muscle force contractile properties between right and left gastrocnemius of the laboratory rat. Fibre type proportion, fibre morphometrical measurements, muscle capillarization and muscle force properties were analysed in the right and left gastrocnemius of six male rats. No statistically significant differences (p=0.265) were found in gastrocnemius to body weight ratio (¿) between right (6.55±0.40) and left (6.49±0.40) muscles. The muscles analysed showed a great degree of heterogeneity in fibre type distribution, having three clearly distinguished regions named red, mixed and white. In the three regions, there were no statistical differences in fibre type proportions between right and left gastrocnemius, as is indicated by the p-values (from 0.203 to 0.941) obtained after running t-Student paired tests for each fibre type. When analysing fibre cross-sectional area, individual fibre capillarization and fibre circularity, no significant differences between right and left gastrocnemius in any of these morphometrical parameters were found in any muscle region or fibre type. Most of the p-values (70%) resulting from running t-Student paired tests were higher than 0.400, and the lowest p-value was 0.115. Seemingly, global capillary and fibre densities were not statistically different between right and left sides in all muscle regions with p-values ranging from 0.337 to 0.812. Force parameters normalized to gastrocnemius mass (mN·g-1) did not show any significant difference between right (PF=74.0±13.4, TF=219.4±13.0) and left (PF=70.9±10.7, TF=213.0±18.0) muscles with p=0.623 (PF) and p=0.514 (TF). Twitch time parameters (ms) also lacked significant differences between the two sides (CT: 43.4±8.6 vs 45.0±14.3, P=0.639; HRT: 77.6±15.0 vs 82.3±25.3, p=0.475). Finally, both muscles also showed similar (p=0.718) fatigue properties. We did find an absence of laterality at the morphological and functional levels, which raises the possibility of using right and left gastrocnemius muscles interchangeably for experimental designs where one muscle is used to analyse data after a physiological intervention and its contralateral muscle plays the control role, thus allowing unbiased paired comparisons to derive accurate conclusions

    Ecological and physiological variance in T-cell mediated immune response in Cory's shearwaters

    T-cell mediated immune response (CMI) hasbeen widely studied in relation to individual andfitness components in birds. However, few studieshave simultaneously examined individual and socialfactors and habitat-mediated variance in theimmunity of chicks and adults from the samepopulation and in the same breeding season. Weinvestigated ecological and physiological variancein CMI of male and female nestlings and adults in abreeding population of Cory's Shearwaters(Calonectrisdiomedea) in theMediterranean Sea. Explanatory variables includedindividual traits (body condition, carbon andnitrogen stable isotope ratios, plasma totalproteins, triglycerides, uric acid, osmolarity,β-hydroxy-butyrate, erythrocyte meancorpuscular diameter, hematocrit, andhemoglobin) and burrow traits(temperature, isolation, and physicalstructure). During incubation, immune responseof adult males was significantly greater than thatof females. Nestlings exhibited a lower immuneresponse than adults. Ecological and physiologicalfactors affecting immune response differed betweenadults and nestlings. General linear models showedthat immune response in adult males was positivelyassociated with burrow isolation, suggesting thatmales breeding at higher densities suffer immunesystem suppression. In contrast, immune response inchicks was positively associated with bodycondition and plasma triglyceride levels.Therefore, adult immune response appears to beassociated with social stress, whereas a trade-offbetween immune function and fasting capability mayexist for nestlings. Our results, and those fromprevious studies, provide support for anasymmetrical influence of ecological andphysiological factors on the health of differentage and sex groups within a population, and for theimportance of simultaneously considering individualand population characteristics in intraspecificstudies of immune response

    Effects of rapid gravity load changes on immunophenotyping and leukocyte function of human peripheral blood after parabolic flight

    One of the biological systems that suffers a physiological de-conditioning in space is the immune system. It is in charge of defending the body against pathogens and other aggressions. The aim of this work is to assess if there are any relevant changes in the aggregation of erythrocytes, cell count, immunophenotyping and functionality after parabolic flight. This effect has been assessed ex vivo using human peripheral blood, which was drawn from the radial vein (n=6 healthy volunteers) and anticoagulated with heparin and EDTA. Blood samples were split into two aliquots and maintained in two identical thermally isolated boxes; one stayed on the ground whereas the other one was subjected to parabolic flight. The parabolic flight consisted of 15 parabolas performed with a Mudry CAP-10B acrobatic aircraft. Each parabola consists of 8 seconds of hypogravity preceded and followed by 2 seconds of hypergravity. Any of the biological parameters measured showed no statistically significant differences. Altered gravity could increase aggregation of red blood cells, as demonstrated by a decrease in the number of single cells after parabolic flight exposure. No counting changes in haemoglobin concentration were observed when comparing the two different groups. Furthermore, potential functional alterations of monocytes and neutrophils cannot be rejected. Although these possible changes could be associated with hypogravity, other factors such as hypergravity and acceleration or deceleration cannot be ruled out.     Properties of Blood, Porphyrins, and Exposure to Legacy and Emerging Persistent Organic Pollutants in Surf Scoters (Melanitta perspicillata) Overwintering on the South Coast of British Columbia, Canada

    The surf scoter (Melanitta perspicillata) is a little-studied species of North American sea duck. Estimates suggest it has experienced a precipitous decline in breeding numbers over the latter half of the past century. To investigate the potential role of contaminant uptake and toxicity in the population decline, this study undertook to measure blood chemistry, porphyrin concentrations, EROD, and organic contaminants in mature surf scoters wintering in the Strait of Georgia, BC, Canada. Hepatic organochlorine pesticide, polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin, polychlorinated dibenzofuran, polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB), polybrominated diphenyl ether, and nonylphenol concentrations were relatively low; for example, ΣTEQs (toxic equivalents) for PCBs, dioxins, and furans combined ranged from 4.7 ng/kg wet weight in reference-site (Baynes Sound) birds to 11.4 ng/kg wet weight in birds from Vancouver Harbour. Nonetheless, elevated EROD activity indicated that birds in Howe Sound were responding to an Ah-receptor-mediated stressor, which was also affecting hematocrit values and possibly vitamin A status. In addition, a low proportion of lymphocytes in individuals across locations in early spring samples was associated with poor body condition. The apparent loss of fitness just prior to the onset of northerly migrations to breeding grounds is of particular concern. Compromised health of mature birds at this point in the season might impact negatively on the productivity and survival of some individuals, particularly those overwintering in Howe Sound

    Functional Morphometric Analysis of the Furcula in Mesozoic Birds

    The furcula displays enormous morphological and structural diversity. Acting as an important origin for flight muscles involved in the downstroke, the form of this element has been shown to vary with flight mode. This study seeks to clarify the strength of this form-function relationship through the use of eigenshape morphometric analysis coupled with recently developed phylogenetic comparative methods (PCMs), including phylogenetic Flexible Discriminant Analysis (pFDA). Additionally, the morphospace derived from the furculae of extant birds is used to shed light on possible flight adaptations of Mesozoic fossil taxa. While broad conclusions of earlier work are supported (U-shaped furculae are associated with soaring, strong anteroposterior curvature with wing-propelled diving), correlations between form and function do not appear to be so clear-cut, likely due to the significantly larger dataset and wider spectrum of flight modes sampled here. Interclavicular angle is an even more powerful discriminator of flight mode than curvature, and is positively correlated with body size. With the exception of the close relatives of modern birds, the ornithuromorphs, Mesozoic taxa tend to occupy unique regions of morphospace, and thus may have either evolved unfamiliar flight styles or have arrived at similar styles through divergent musculoskeletal configurations

    Strength training under hypoxic conditions

    Kon et al. (5) published a recent paper entitled “Effects of systemic hypoxia on human muscular adaptations to resistance exercise training”. Their conclusion suggested two important findings: (1) an increased muscular endurance and, (2) the promotion of angiogenesis in skeletal muscle in the hypoxic‐trained subjects compared to the normoxic‐trained subjects. The paper of Kon et al. (5). reinforces the idea that resistance training combined with hypoxia (at a relatively low‐strength‐training intensity, i.e., 70% 1 RM) could be a useful way to enhance endurance capacity but it remains to be seen whether the training program used was the most appropriate method for developing endurance capacity in endurance‐based athletes

We here devise a phase-resonant excitation mechanism of an atomic interface where full control of a narrowband single-photon two-mode frequency entangled state can be efficiently achieved. We illustrate the working physical mechanism for an interface made of cold 87 Rb atoms where entanglement is well preserved from degradation over a typical 100â€...μm length scale of the interface and with fractional delays of the order of unity. The scheme provides a basis for efficient multi-frequency and multi-photon entanglement, which is not easily accessible to polarization and spatial encoding

    Popularity of hypoxic training methods for endurance-based professional and amateur athletes

    © 2015 Elsevier Inc.Scientific debate continues into whether hypoxic training has any performance benefit for athletes, and although this type of training seems popular, to our knowledge little empirical evidence on its popularity with endurance-based athletes exists. To quantify the usage of hypoxic training in endurance-based athletes we asked 203 athletes (amateur = 108, professional = 95) to complete a 17-question survey during 2013-2014 season. Compared to amateurs, professional athletes were 4.5 times (3.0-6.8, odds ratio, 95% confidence limits) more likely to undertake hypoxic training. Live-high train-low was the most popular hypoxic training protocol for athletes (52% professional and 80% amateur) with live-high train-high also used (38% professional, 20% amateur). Compared to amateurs, professional athletes tended to use evidence-based hypoxic training methods, seek advice on hypoxic training from reliable sources and were generally more realistic about the potential performance gains as a result of hypoxic training. Almost one third (25-30%) of all athletes suffered illness during their hypoxic training. Compared to amateurs, professional athletes are more likely to undertake hypoxic training and tend to follow current scientific guidelines. Attenuation of the ill effects that occur during hypoxic training may be accomplished if athletes give more attention to monitoring stress and training levels
