[EN]: A study of twenty eight fragments of amphoras from the archaeological bed of Cerro Macareno
(Sevilla) has been done by chemical, physicochemical, X-ray diffraction and thermal methods, in order to
establish the nature and provenance of the raw materials and the technological aspects of their fabrication.
All the data lead to the conclusion that four of the pieces were probably imported from the
Palestine-Phoenicie; the rest were made out of raw materials from the surrounding areas of Cerro
Macareno. Most of the pieces were fired below 700°C, only four of them at about 700-750°C, and the
Lasso Estimation of an Interval-Valued Multiple Regression Model
A multiple interval-valued linear regression model considering all the
cross-relationships between the mids and spreads of the intervals has been
introduced recently. A least-squares estimation of the regression parameters
has been carried out by transforming a quadratic optimization problem with
inequality constraints into a linear complementary problem and using Lemke's
algorithm to solve it. Due to the irrelevance of certain cross-relationships,
an alternative estimation process, the LASSO (Least Absolut Shrinkage and
Selection Operator), is developed. A comparative study showing the differences
between the proposed estimators is provided
Soil and water pollution in a banana production region in tropical Mexico
The effects of abundant Mancozeb (Mn, Zn— bisdithiocarbamate) applications (2.5 kg ha-1week-1 for 10 years) on soil and surface-, subsurface- and groundwater pollution were monitored in a banana production region of tropical Mexico. In soils, severe manganese accumulation was observed, wheras the main metabolite ethylenethiourea was near the detection limit. Surface and subsurface water was highly polluted with ethylenethiourea, the main metabolite of Mancozeb (22.5 and 4.3 lg L-1, respectively), but not with manganese. In deep ground water, no ethylenethiourea was detected. The level of pollution in the region presents a worrisome risk for aquatic life and for human health
Electric field induced fluid flow on microelectrodes: the effect of illumination
The electrokinetic manipulation of particles suspended in a fluid medium is accomplished using microelectrodes that generate non-uniform fields of significant strength from low applied potentials. The high strength fields produce not only forces on the particles but also on the fluid medium used for suspension. This paper presents qualitative and semi-quantitative observations of the movement of the fluid at applied field frequencies of the order of 1MHz and higher. The importance of the illumination in generating the fluid flow is described, the flow depending on both the intensity of illumination and the applied electric field. The theory of electrothermally induced fluid flow is briefly described and compared with the experimental observations. Reasonable agreement is found between the experiments and the theory, with the light generating temperature gradients, and therefore gradients in fluid permittivity and conductivity, and the electric field responsible for the motive force
How much dark matter is there inside early-type galaxies?
We study the luminous mass as a function of the dynamical mass inside the
effective radius (r_e) of early-type galaxies (ETGs) to search for differences
between these masses. We assume Newtonian dynamics and that any difference
between these masses is due to the presence of dark matter. We use several
samples of ETGs -ranging from 19 000 to 98 000 objects- from the ninth data
release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We perform Monte Carlo (MC)
simulations of galaxy samples and compare them with real samples. The main
results are: i) MC simulations show that the distribution of the dynamical vs.
luminous mass depends on the mass range where the ETGs are distributed
(geometric effect). This dependence is caused by selection effects and
intrinsic properties of the ETGs. ii) The amount of dark matter inside r_e is
approximately 7% +- 22%. iii) This amount of dark matter is lower than the
minimum estimate (10%) found in the literature and four times lower than the
average (30%) of literature estimates. However, if we consider the associated
error, our estimate is of the order of the literature average.Comment: 24 pages, 12 figures. MNRAS accepte
Ground characterization of building energy models
The calibration of building energy models is crucial for their use in some applications that depend on
their accuracy for adequate performance, such as demand response and model predictive control
(MPC). In general, energy models offer many possibilities/strategies when characterizing a construction
system, and such a characterization is key when analyzing both its thermal behavior and its energy
impact. This research analyzes the different ways to characterize the thermal interaction of the building
energy model (BEM) with the ground, comparing conventional approaches with new approaches based
on both optimization of the former and dynamic ground characterizations. Using a model adjusted to
a real case study, each of the existing options are analyzed, in which a different control of the ground
temperature both in terms of its temporal oscillation and its location in the building (based on thermal
zones) is taken into account. Exhaustive monitoring of a real building and measuring the ground and
ground floor surface temperatures have made establishing which EnergyPlus components/objects best
characterize the ground-slab interaction possible, both in terms of the simplicity of modeling and the cost
(economic and technical) required for each of them. As will be seen, there are objects with an excellent
cost/effectiveness ratio when characterizing the groun
Fil: Monroig, Sibila. Characterization of AGN and their hosts in the Extended Groth Strip: a multiwavelength analysis
We have employed a reliable technique of classification of Active Galactic
Nuclei (AGN) based on the fit of well-sampled spectral energy distributions
(SEDs) with a complete set of AGN and starburst galaxy templates. We have
compiled ultraviolet, optical, and infrared data for a sample of 116 AGN
originally selected for their X-ray and mid-infrared emissions (96 with single
detections and 20 with double optical counterparts). This is the most complete
compilation of multiwavelength data for such a big sample of AGN in the
Extended Groth Strip (EGS). Through these SEDs, we are able to obtain highly
reliable photometric redshifts and to distinguish between pure and
host-dominated AGN. For the objects with unique detection we find that they can
be separated into five main groups, namely: Starburst-dominated AGN (24 % of
the sample), Starburst-contaminated AGN (7 %), Type-1 AGN (21 %), Type-2 AGN
(24 %), and Normal galaxy hosting AGN (24 %). We find these groups concentrated
at different redshifts: Type-2 AGN and Normal galaxy hosting AGN are
concentrated at low redshifts, whereas Starburst-dominated AGN and Type-1 AGN
show a larger span. Correlations between hard/soft X-ray and ultraviolet,
optical and infrared luminosities, respectively, are reported for the first
time for such a sample of AGN spanning a wide range of redshifts. For the 20
objects with double detection the percentage of Starburst-dominated AGN
increases up to 48%.Comment: 38 pages, 8 figures, 5 tables. Accepted by A
Emerging planetary nebulae within 3D spiral patterns
We present the first 3D radiation-hydrodynamic simulations of the formation
of planetary nebulae (PNe) emerging from 3D spiral patterns. We use the GUACHO
code to create 3D spiral structures as a consequence of the distortions on the
geometry of the intrinsically isotropic wind of an asymptotic giant branch
(AGB) star produced by a companion star in a circular orbit. We found that the
orbital period of the binary producing the 3D spiral pattern has consequences
on the formation and shaping of the PN itself. Stellar systems with longer
period create less entwined 3D spirals, producing PNe with rounder inner
cavities, and prevent the expansion of jet towards the polar directions. The
spiral fitting procedure used in the literature to predict the binary's orbital
period may be misleading in the case of proto-PNe and PNe as spiral patterns
are diluted by their own thermal expansion down to the average AGB density
profile within a few hundred years and are further disrupted by the action of
jets. By adopting a phase of jet ejections between the AGB and post-AGB stages,
we are able to recover the morphologies of proto-PNe and PNe that exhibit
ring-like structures in their halos.Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures, 1 table; Accepted to MNRA
