Improving the precision matrix for precision cosmology
The estimation of cosmological constraints from observations of the large
scale structure of the Universe, such as the power spectrum or the correlation
function, requires the knowledge of the inverse of the associated covariance
matrix, namely the precision matrix, . In most analyses,
is estimated from a limited set of mock catalogues. Depending
on how many mocks are used, this estimation has an associated error which must
be propagated into the final cosmological constraints. For future surveys such
as Euclid and DESI, the control of this additional uncertainty requires a
prohibitively large number of mock catalogues. In this work we test a novel
technique for the estimation of the precision matrix, the covariance tapering
method, in the context of baryon acoustic oscillation measurements. Even though
this technique was originally devised as a way to speed up maximum likelihood
estimations, our results show that it also reduces the impact of noisy
precision matrix estimates on the derived confidence intervals, without
introducing biases on the target parameters. The application of this technique
can help future surveys to reach their true constraining power using a
significantly smaller number of mock catalogues.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, minor changes to match version accepted by MNRA
Is demagnetization an efficient optimization method?
Demagnetization, commonly employed to study ferromagnets, has been proposed
as the basis for an optimization tool, a method to find the ground state of a
disordered system. Here we present a detailed comparison between the ground
state and the demagnetized state in the random field Ising model, combing exact
results in and numerical solutions in . We show that there are
important differences between the two states that persist in the thermodynamic
limit and thus conclude that AC demagnetization is not an efficient
optimization method.Comment: 2 pages, 1 figur
In this article I analyse the role of interpretation and explanation in the field of sciences in general and in social and historical sciences in particular. I argue for the specificity of the narrative model in social and historical sciences. Then, I examine the thesis that personal identity or self is a type of autobiographic story that can show different rank of coherence and integration. Taking the proposal of different authors, I describe and I do a brief characterization of this of narrative creation and the most important element that compose its. Finally, I analyse the thesis that propose to think the psychotherapy as a place for reconstruction of the narrative production of patients for to get more coherent stories
The galaxy density environment of gamma-ray burst host galaxies
We analyze cross-correlation functions between Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) hosts
and surrounding galaxies. We have used data obtained with the Very Large
Telescope at Cerro Paranal (Chile), as well as public Hubble Space Telescope
data. Our results indicate that Gamma-Ray Burst host galaxies do not reside in
high galaxy density environments. Moreover, the host-galaxy cross-correlations
show a relatively low amplitude. Our results are in agreement with the
cross-correlation function between star-forming galaxies and surrounding
objects in the HDF-N.Comment: 6 figures, accepted for publication in Ap
