    Modular forms, deformation of punctured spheres, and extensions of symmetric tensor representations

We introduce and study~n3n-3 deformation operators on the space of modular forms~M(Γ)M_*(\Gamma) based on the classical theory of uniformizing differential equations and accessory parameters. When restricting to modular functions, we recover a construction in Teichm\"uller theory related to the deformation of the complex structure of~XX. We describe the deformation operators in terms of derivations with respect to Eichler integrals of weight-four cusp forms, and in terms of vector-valued modular forms attached to extensions of symmetric tensor representations

    Exploiting temporal information for 3D pose estimation

    In this work, we address the problem of 3D human pose estimation from a sequence of 2D human poses. Although the recent success of deep networks has led many state-of-the-art methods for 3D pose estimation to train deep networks end-to-end to predict from images directly, the top-performing approaches have shown the effectiveness of dividing the task of 3D pose estimation into two steps: using a state-of-the-art 2D pose estimator to estimate the 2D pose from images and then mapping them into 3D space. They also showed that a low-dimensional representation like 2D locations of a set of joints can be discriminative enough to estimate 3D pose with high accuracy. However, estimation of 3D pose for individual frames leads to temporally incoherent estimates due to independent error in each frame causing jitter. Therefore, in this work we utilize the temporal information across a sequence of 2D joint locations to estimate a sequence of 3D poses. We designed a sequence-to-sequence network composed of layer-normalized LSTM units with shortcut connections connecting the input to the output on the decoder side and imposed temporal smoothness constraint during training. We found that the knowledge of temporal consistency improves the best reported result on Human3.6M dataset by approximately 12.2%12.2\% and helps our network to recover temporally consistent 3D poses over a sequence of images even when the 2D pose detector fails

    Developing effective practice learning for tomorrow's social workers

The changes and developments are briefly identified and examined in the context of what we know about practice learning. The paper presents some findings from a small scale qualitative study of key stakeholders involved in practice learning and education in social work and their perceptions of these anticipated changes, which are revisited at implementation. The implications for practice learning are discussed

    Novel role for polycystin-1 in modulating cell proliferation through calcium oscillations in kidney cells

    Objectives: Polycystin-1 (PC1), a signalling receptor regulating Ca2+-permeable cation channels, is mutated in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease, which is typically characterized by increased cell proliferation. However, the precise mechanisms by which PC1 functions on Ca2+ homeostasis, signalling and cell proliferation remain unclear. Here, we investigated the possible role of PC1 as a modulator of non-capacitative Ca2+ entry (NCCE) and Ca2+ oscillations, with downstream effects on cell proliferation. Results and discussion: By employing RNA interference, we show that depletion of endogenous PC1 in HEK293 cells leads to an increase in serum-induced Ca2+ oscillations, triggering nuclear factor of activated T cell activation and leading to cell cycle progression. Consistently, Ca2+ oscillations and cell proliferation are increased in PC1-mutated kidney cystic cell lines, but both abnormal features are reduced in cells that exogenously express PC1. Notably, blockers of the NCCE pathway, but not of the CCE, blunt abnormal oscillation and cell proliferation. Our study therefore provides the first demonstration that PC1 modulates Ca2+ oscillations and a molecular mechanism to explain the association between abnormal Ca2+ homeostasis and cell proliferation in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease

    CONSTRUCTAL DESIGN OF FINS IN COOLED CAVITIES BY NON-NEWTONIAN FLUIDS

    The present work investigates the Construtal Design of fins inserted in cavities submitted to mixed convection by non-Newtonian fluids. The objective is to obtain the optimum aspect ratio for the fin considering different flow conditions and variations in the rheological parameters of the fluid. The phenomena of flow and heat transfer are modeled by mass balance, momentum and energy equations, and by the generalized Newtonian liquid constitutive equation. The viscosity is modeled as that of a pseudoplastic fluid, using the Carreau function. The optimization problem consists in maximizing heat transfer from the fin using the average Nusselt number. The investigated project variable is the aspect ratio between the edges of the rectangular plane fin profile. The restrictions are the volume of the cavity and the fin. The results are obtained numerically using a finite volume code and a two-dimensional geometry, through exhaustive searching. The results show that the fin geometry influences the maximum Nusselt number mainly for the cases with high Reynolds and Rayleigh numbers, such as was shown in previous studies.     Arquitetura deposicional da barreira holocênica na porção meridional da Ilha de São Francisco do Sul, SC, Brasil

    The geophysical method GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) together with subsurface sampling with a vibrocore allowed to characterize the sedimentary facies and depositional architecture of the Holocenic portion of the Ilha de São Francisco do Sul coastal plain, located in the northern region of Santa Catarina State. The study area was divided into two distinct blocks, north and south, according to the sedimentary architecture defined by radar stratigraphy. The collected data allowed the characterization of beach, eolic, lagoon and estuarine depositional environments in the radargram profiles. The north block has reflectors consistent with barrier progradation during the sea level fall of 2.5 m in the last 5,000 years. At south block the reflectors show clear influence of paleochannels systems and spits in the barrier development, where the progradation occurred under the influence of the Babitonga paleoestuary dynamics.O método geofísico do radar de penetração no solo (GPR) juntamente com sondagens utilizando um vibrotestemunhador permitiram caracterizar as fácies sedimentares e a arquitetura deposicional da porção holocênica da planície costeira da Ilha de São Francisco do Sul, litoral norte de Santa Catarina. A área de estudo foi dividida em dois blocos, norte e sul, segundo a arquitetura deposicional definida através da estratigrafia de radar. Os dados obtidos permitiram a caracteriza- ção dos ambientes de sedimentação praial, eólico, lagunar e estuarino nos radargramas. No bloco norte são interpretados refletores condizentes com a progradação da barreira, relacionada com a queda de nível do mar de 2,5 m nos últimos 5.000 anos. No bloco sul, os refletores mostram clara influência de sistemas de paleocanais e esporões arenosos no desenvolvimento da barreira, onde a progradação se desenvolveu sob a influência da dinâmica do paleoestuário da Babitonga

    Anthocyanins restore behavioral and biochemical changes caused by streptozotocin-induced sporadic dementia of Alzheimer's type

    Aims The aim of this study was to analyze if the pre-administration of anthocyanin on memory and anxiety prevented the effects caused by intracerebroventricular streptozotocin (icv-STZ) administration-induced sporadic dementia of Alzheimer's type (SDAT) in rats. Moreover, we evaluated whether the levels of nitrite/nitrate (NOx), Na+,K+-ATPase, Ca2 +-ATPase and acethylcholinesterase (AChE) activities in the cerebral cortex (CC) and hippocampus (HC) are altered in this experimental SDAT. Main methods Male Wistar rats were divided in 4 different groups: control (CTRL), anthocyanin (ANT), streptozotocin (STZ) and streptozotocin + anthocyanin (STZ + ANT). After seven days of treatment with ANT (200 mg/kg; oral), the rats were icv-STZ injected (3 mg/kg), and four days later the behavior parameters were performed and the animals submitted to euthanasia. Key findings A memory deficit was found in the STZ group, but ANT treatment showed that it prevents this impairment of memory (P < 0.05). Our results showed a higher anxiety in the icv-STZ group, but treatment with ANT showed a per se effect and prevented the anxiogenic behavior induced by STZ. Our results reveal that the ANT treatment (100 μM) tested displaces the specific binding of [3H] flunitrazepam to the benzodiazepinic site of GABAA receptors. AChE, Ca+-ATPase activities and NOx levels were found to be increased in HC and CC in the STZ group, which was attenuated by ANT (P < 0.05). STZ decreased Na+,K+-ATPase activity and ANT was able to prevent these effects (P < 0.05). Significance In conclusion, these findings demonstrated that ANT is able to regulate ion pump activity and cholinergic neurotransmission, as well as being able to enhance memory and act as an anxiolytic compound in animals with SDAT

    Monocular Expressive Body Regression through Body-Driven Attention

    To understand how people look, interact, or perform tasks, we need to quickly and accurately capture their 3D body, face, and hands together from an RGB image. Most existing methods focus only on parts of the body. A few recent approaches reconstruct full expressive 3D humans from images using 3D body models that include the face and hands. These methods are optimization-based and thus slow, prone to local optima, and require 2D keypoints as input. We address these limitations by introducing ExPose (EXpressive POse and Shape rEgression), which directly regresses the body, face, and hands, in SMPL-X format, from an RGB image. This is a hard problem due to the high dimensionality of the body and the lack of expressive training data. Additionally, hands and faces are much smaller than the body, occupying very few image pixels. This makes hand and face estimation hard when body images are downscaled for neural networks. We make three main contributions. First, we account for the lack of training data by curating a dataset of SMPL-X fits on in-the-wild images. Second, we observe that body estimation localizes the face and hands reasonably well. We introduce body-driven attention for face and hand regions in the original image to extract higher-resolution crops that are fed to dedicated refinement modules. Third, these modules exploit part-specific knowledge from existing face- and hand-only datasets. ExPose estimates expressive 3D humans more accurately than existing optimization methods at a small fraction of the computational cost.
