Defining properties of neural crest-derived progenitor cells from the apex of human developing tooth

    Get PDF
The connective tissue of the human tooth arises from cells that are derived from the cranial neural crest and, thus, are termed as "ectomesenchymal cells." Here, cells being located in a pad-like tissue adjacent to the apex of the developing tooth, which we designated the third molar pad, were separated by the microexplant technique. When outgrowing from the explant, dental neural crest-derived progenitor cells (dNC-PCs) adhered to plastic, proliferated steadily, and displayed a fibroblast-like morphology. At the mRNA level, dNC-PCs expressed neural crest marker genes like Sox9, Snail1, Snail2, Twist1, Msx2, and Dlx6. Cytofluorometric analysis indicated that cells were positive for CD49d (alpha4 integrin), CD56 (NCAM), and PDGFRalpha, while negative for CD31, CD34, CD45, and STRO-1. dNC-PCs could be differentiated into neurogenic, chondrogenic, and osteogenic lineages and were shown to produce bone matrix in athymic mice. These results demonstrate that human third molar pad possesses neural crest-derived cells that represent multipotent stem/progenitor cells. As a rather large amount of dNC-PCs could be obtained from each single third molar, cells may be used to regenerate a wide range of tissues within the craniofacial region of humans

    Role-based Runtime Model Synchronization

    Get PDF
Model-driven Software Development (MDSD) promotes the use of multiple related models to realize a software system systematically. These models usually contain redundant information but are independently edited. This easily leads to inconsistencies among them. To ensure consistency among multiple models, model synchronizations have to be employed, e.g., by means of model transformations, trace links, or triple graph grammars. Model synchronization poses three main problems for MDSD. First, classical model synchronization approaches have to be manually triggered to perform the synchronization. However, to support the consistent evolution of multiple models, it is necessary to immediately and continuously update all of them. Second, synchronization rules are specified at design time and, in classic approaches, cannot be extended at runtime, which is necessary if metamodels evolve at runtime. Finally, most classical synchronization approaches focus on bilateral model synchronization, i.e., the synchronization between two models. Consequently, for more than two models, they require the definition of pairwise model synchronizations leading to a combinatorial explosion of synchronization rules. To remedy these issues, we propose a role-based approach for runtime model synchronization. In particular, we propose role-based synchronization rules that enable the immediate and continuous propagation of changes to multiple interrelated models (and back again). Additionally, our approach permits adding new and customized synchronization rules at runtime. We illustrate the benefits of role-based runtime model synchronization using the Families to Persons case study from the Transformation Tool Contest 2017

Investigation on spatial auditory perception using non-uniform spatial distribution of binaural room impulse responses

    Get PDF
For spatial audio reproduction in the context of virtual and augmented reality, a position-dynamic binaural synthesis can be used to reproduce the ear signals for a moving listener. A set of binaural room impulse responses (BRIRs) is required for each possible position of the listener in the room. The required spatial resolution of the BRIR positions can be estimated by spatial auditory perception thresholds. If the resolution is too low, jumps in perception of direction and distance and coloration effects occur. This contribution presents an evaluation of spatial audio quality using different spatial resolutions of the position of the used BRIRs. The evaluation is performed with a moving listener. The test persons evaluate any abnormalities in the spatial audio quality. The result is a comparison of the quality and the spatial resolution of the various conditions used

To understand leadership as an art is the objective of this book. One key aspect is the topic of freedom: Stefan Brotbeck develops a phenomenology of "Unfreiheit" by unmasking mechanisms which he describes as social denaturation. Further topics are amongst others the "liberation" of leadership (Rehn), Hierarchie (Hardorp), confidence (Lavecchia), education (Dietz) and sense-making (Werner)

    Ordered phases in spin-Peierls systems

The microscopic description of spin-Peierls substances is discussed. Particular attention is paid to the ordered (dimerised and incommensurably modulated) phases. Important points are the adiabatic and the antiadiabatic approach, generic soliton forms, elastic and magnetic interchain couplings. The wealth and the accuracy of experimental information collected for the first inorganic spin-Peierls substance CuGeO_3 motivates this work.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures included, submitted to Physica B in the Proceedings to LT22, Helsinki, 199
