On September, 2003, Mazahua peasants from Villa de Allende,State of México, suffered flooding on 300 hectares of cropsbecause of overflowing of the Malacatepec River, originatingfrom the Villa Victoria dam of the Cutzamala system. Thiswas the reason why the peasants organized themselves todemand payment of their crops. After three months of waiting,in February 2004, the Mazahua began a series of collectiveactions and came together as the Frente para la Defensa de losDerechos Humanos y Recursos Naturales del Pueblo Mazahua. After one year of mobilization, the Ejército Zapatista deMujeres en Defensa del Agua arose, which turned out to havean important media impact that was able to exercise politicalpressure on the instances involved, in benefit of the movement. The objective of this document is to present the most significantfindings regarding the participation of Mazahua people inthe movement. Also, to expose the causes that generated thisimportant political movement, which transcended beyondpayment of crop damages, consolidating other demands such as:provision of drinking water and basic services, as well as a planfor sustainable development for the communities.

Promoting citizenship in present-day societies means reinforcing those aspects of people’s characters which will allow them to behave responsibly and actively and be involved in achieving the common good. We believe that the main difficulty to be found in civic education nowadays is a lack of ethics. Learning to be a good citizen is a lifelong task and practical wisdom which not only demands intelligence to recognize which traits improve our life in society but also the will to practice them. Character education is a way of understanding and identifying moral education. It aims to reaffirm the inescapable ethical dimension of education. This proposal has its origins in classical Greece, but it was not until the 1980s and 90s that the ethics of virtue received a great boost and became the basis for a good deal of contemporary character education. It is not by chance that character education has grown so much in importance over the last few years, especially in the English-speaking world, in parallel with an increase in Service-Learning methodology

36th Cordoba Guitar Festival: Spectator Analysis Using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM)

The Cordoba Guitar Festival is one of the most important cultural events in Spain. This article analyses the musical preferences, satisfaction, attitudinal loyalty, and behavioural loyalty of spectators who attended the 36th festival held in July 2016, as well as the festival’s economic impact on the city. These characteristics of the public give rise to the four hypotheses of this study. To achieve this aim, a structural equation model (SEM) was used. The results −χ2 = 27.79, with the p-value found to be p = P (χ2 ≥ 27.79) = 0.224—show the goodness-of-fit of the model and indicate that the observed data do fit the expected dataset. The results therefore allow us to accept the proposed hypotheses concerning the influence of different latent factors, such as musical preferences, loyalty, and satisfaction with the festival. This is the main focus with which the present study has been written. Regarding the economic impact, the Festival raised 1.2 million euros, that is, slightly more than 73,000 euros per day. The amount, although not very high, is important as additional income for the city. The conclusions show the need to consider the preferences of the spectator as an essential tool to enable the continuation and longevity of the Cordoba Guitar Festival—an important cultural destination

International Conference of Agricultural Engineering Aarhus, Denmark 26 - 29 June (2016)One of the biggest challenges to organic agricultural production and herbicide resistant crops in industrialized countries today is the non-chemical control of weed plants. Studies of new tools and methods for weed control have been motivated by an increased consumer demand for organic produce and consumer and regulatory demands for a reduction in environmentally harmful herbicide use. The objective of this study is to assess different agricultural residues as gritty weed-abrading materials that are delivered through condensed-air machinery. This is a new weed control technology based on highly-directed air-propelled, innocuous, abrasive grit. Laboratory equipment was designed to calculate the angle of repose of seven different agricultural residues (crushed olive seed, walnut shell, maize cob, poultry manure, soybean seed, almond shell and grape seed). Color, digital, high-speed computer vision analysis of the motion and energy of the air-propelled particles was conducted. The high-speed video analysis determined the capability of each grit to damage a reference surface and kill weeds (species of Amaranthus, Centaurea, and Chenopodium) at different growth stages. A preliminary laboratory trial showed that walnut shell grit has great potential to damage/break the reference surface when it was propelled at 600, 700 and 800 kPa air pressure. Abrasive-weeding reduced final weed biomass by 80% compared with the weedy control at early growth stages. Field research tests are needed in different cropping systems to improve the technical and economic efficiency of this novel system before on-farm adoption

Occurrence of antibiotics and bacterial resistance in wastewater and sea water from the Antarctic

The potential presence of introduced antibiotics in the aquatic environment is a hot topic of concern, particularly in the Antarctic, a highly vulnerable area protected under the Madrid protocol. The increasing presence of human population, especially during summer, might led to the appearance of pharmaceuticals in wastewater. The previous discovery of Escherichia coli strains resistant to antibiotics in sea water and wastewater collected in King George Island motivated our investigation on antibiotics occurrence in these samples. The application of a multi-residue LCMS/MS method for 20 antibiotics, revealed the presence of 8 compounds in treated wastewater, mainly the quinolones ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin (92% and 54% of the samples analyzed, average concentrations 0.89 μg/L and 0.75 μg/L, respectively) and the macrolides azithromycin and clarithromycin (15% positive samples, and average concentrations near 0.4 μg/L), and erythromycin (38% positive samples, average concentration 0.003 μg/L). Metronidazole and clindamycin were found in one sample, at 0.17 and 0.1 μg/L, respectively; and trimethoprim in two samples, at 0.001 μg/L. Analysis of sea water collected near the outfall of the wastewater discharges also showed the sporadic presence of 3 antibiotics (ciprofloxacin, clindamycin, trimethoprim) at low ng/L level, illustrating the impact of pharmaceuticals consumption and the poor removal of these compounds in conventional WWTPs. The most widespread antibiotic in sea water was ciprofloxacin, which was found in 15 out of 34 sea water samples analyzed, at concentrations ranging from 4 to 218 ng/L. Bacteria resistance was observed for some antibiotics identified in the samples (e.g. trimetropim and nalidixic acid –a first generation quinolone). However, resistance to some groups of antibiotics could not be correlated to their presence in the water samples due to analytical limitations (penicillins, tetraciclines). On the contrary, for some groups of antibiotics detected in samples (macrolides), the antibacterial activity against E. Coli was not investigated because these antibiotics do not include this bacterial species in their spectrum of activity. Our preliminary data demonstrate that antibiotics occurrence in the Antarctic aquatic environment is an issue that needs to be properly addressed. Periodical monitoring of water samples and the implementation of additional treatments in the WWTPs are recommended as a first step to prevent potential problems related to the presence of antibiotics and other emerging contaminants in the near future in Antarctica

Zebrafish modeling reveals that SPINT1 regulates the aggressiveness of skin cutaneous melanoma and its crosstalk with tumor immune microenvironment

    Get PDF
Background Skin cutaneous melanoma (SKCM) is the most lethal form of skin cancer and while incidence rates are declining for most cancers, they have been steadily rising for SKCM. Serine protease inhibitor, kunitz-type, 1 (SPINT1) is a type II transmembrane serine protease inhibitor that has been shown to be involved in the development of several types of cancer, such as squamous cell carcinoma and colorectal cancer. Methods We used the unique advantages of the zebrafish to model the impact of Spint1a deficiency in early transformation, progression and metastatic invasion of SKCM together with in silico analysis of the occurrence and relevance of SPINT1 genetic alterations of the SKCM TCGA cohort. Results We report here a high prevalence of SPINT1 genetic alterations in SKCM patients and their association with altered tumor immune microenvironment and poor patient survival. The zebrafish model reveals that Spint1a deficiency facilitates oncogenic transformation, regulates the tumor immune microenvironment crosstalk, accelerates the onset of SKCM and promotes metastatic invasion. Notably, Spint1a deficiency is required at both cell autonomous and non-autonomous levels to enhance invasiveness of SKCM. Conclusions These results reveal a novel therapeutic target for SKCM
